That is the best description of slashdot that I've ever read.
This should replace "News for Nerds. Stuff that matters." as the slogan.

If this article actually DOES change anybodies opinion about Microsoft, please ensure that those people stay CLEAR of bizarrecults.
When are folks going to realize that this:
1.) bashing of MS
2.) copy all sorts of MS techniques into Linux
3.) bash again
is just plain dumb.
The linux community should be thankful for Microsoft. It gives splinter groups (gnome & kde, vi & emacs, dev & devfs, xfs & ext3fs, etc) a common enemy...
In reality, all Linux Distros are "for beginners."
To some extent, they all 'hold your hand' during install, as well as providing you with a pretty & nice GUI for administration.
Mandrake is the undisputed King of user-ease.
Redhat is 2nd to Mandrake.
Debian is/ok/. apt-get is a decent substitute for a ports-tree.
slack feels just like it did back in '94.
If I had to chose a Linux distro, I'd probably either go with Mandrake (ease of everything) or debian (actually feels like real-unix to some degree).
Hopefully, events such as this will serve as a wake-up call to folks.
Computer security is not a luxury to quickly become an afterthought.
Security is the foundation that everything else should rest upon...
...which, most will agree, is not that difficult to do, if planned correctly, by the proper individuals...
Why in the name of all reason would you work at a place that does not pay you?
I once told a former boss, "I"m here for the money, nothing more" when I was informed that my paycheck would be split over 1 month, and was then delayed.
All over, in the Silicon Foo's of your local area, about 2 years or so ago, ther was a market boom going on.
This boom caused a huge need for employees. If you knew someone, who knew UN*X (i.e., HS graduate who played with linux), you got them jobs as UN*X Engineers...
Rinse and Repeate this same situation for many, many different careers...
Most of the people that I know that have been laid off, never should have had the job in the first place. There are exceptions... Company X can't afford $175k+ for the CCIE anymore... or $120k for the Principle UN*X Engineer... or so on.
I feel bad for these people, as they had it really good, then reality kicked them in the face.
Like I try to tell these folks, In 'n' Out Burger pays $11.75/hr in Mountain View, and $9.75/hr in South Man Jose...
...it's not the $65k you were making before for knowing "kill -HUP `ps aux | grep named`" or how to add users, but it'll pay the bills... but you'll need to move out of that $1675/month apartment in Mountain View...
I have received many inquiries into moving on to a new job. I have no desire to do that, at this time. I like my company.
The moral of the story:
There are jobs out there, for qualified individuals.
(Please don't mod this down because you think I'm cold hearted)
Hi, my name is Steve. I come from a rough area. I used to be addicted to crack but now I am off it and trying to stay clean. That is why I am selling magazine subscriptions.
One of the reasons Napster was shut down is coz they give users the opportunity to steal music that costs alot. If you push up the cost you drive more people to steal. Make people pay mroe to watch TV by having to use a smartcard, you have cable and pay-per-view.
The cheap and the amoral will always steal.
The GPL crowd trys to bring it up as an argument of "social conscience". This argument fails, due to the fact that the recording artist depends upon the revenue from the albums in order to survive.
Granted, the/Record Company/ is definatly fixing the costs of CDs, but that does not make theft justified.
Yes, yes, yes, there is appropriate 'fair use' of using music that you already own.
Napster was NEVER about listening to music that you already own. Napster was about "Here's mine, how about yours"
and yes mods, I know this is marginally off-topic.
IPFilter is by far, the best "open source" firewall available for UN*X, by a long shot.
It allows for correct NAT, unlike IP Tables, a great stateful inspection table, and relativly simple rules...
I did quite a bit of looking for a UN*X based firewall solution, (Open Source), and IPF was the only one worth using. Face it, IP Tables is really left in the dust.
CmdrMyopia writes... I still think this is cool stuff. People are just going to cheat online: drivers don't have all that much to do with it. And if they can't cheat, they'll DoS attack. Maybe I'm just disillusioned, but I have more fun playing with people I know and trust then strangers. Strangers cheat.
You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. MMOG (Massivly Multiplayer Online Games) can NOT exist soley with people you know.
could this be an early skirmish in the upcoming IP Wars????
That anything like The Clone Wars?

In regards to the message sent by some "Slashbot".
Please let it be known that every person I know of, that watches BattleBots will continue to do so, without regard for this BB.com vs bb.org drama.
I want BioHazard to come back next season, and wipe the floor with all other bots.
Oh, and what about a dream match...
BioHazard vs. Ziggo
please?
All he needs to show is an invoice for charge for domain registration, prior to CC getting the BB trademark.
I bet he doesn't have it.
no way.
The most usefull Solaris command is...
# uadmin 2 1
No, Microsoft used the 'million monkeys' method, and shipped the first thing that compiled.
I was thinking along the lines of posting when a new redhat release was being up'd to mirrors, and slashdot posts... effectivly killing all mirrors.
Or jumping the gun on some crazy Microsoft-Anti-Linux-Anime-Bluetooth-Carnivore laden DMCA bill being pushed through by Jon Katz & Larry Ellison.
this is a day early, and not entirly accurate
