I can only speak from personal experience, but in the 1.5 years that I have had DSL with PacBell/PBI I have only been without service for about 72 hours. This includes all maintenance windows and unscheduled outages.

I've got friends with Speakeasy (crap), DSL.net (worse crap), and one who just lost Flashcom (surprised they lasted this long with such poor service).

By FAR I have had significantly better service and performance than any of the 'alternative' or lesser DSL services...

Plus, my throughput is nearly static. Anytime day or night I get a consistant 100Kbps - 120Kbps.
Ping to game servers is in the 20 - 35 range.

    "Why linux? Becasue we can"
    or some such other garbage.

This was clearly the case of 'use linux because we have to pay for the others'

It offers NO benefits other beyond the more tested and proven PDA OSes.

I have several friends with speakeasy and other 'alternative' providers using COVAD, and I truly feel sorry for their angst. In the 1.5 years of having PacBell, I have lost service for a grand total of 96 hours.
