STK500 + assortment of ATTiny and ATMega processors + Atmel Studio 6.0. Once you figure out how it all works, add to your setup the soldering iron, 100x160mm proto boards, IC sockets, transistors, op amps, etc. Install on your computer Tina-TI (free from Texas Instruments) and explore the analog side too.
At this age the do believe that P &= ~( 1 << B) is a very clever to express setting a port pin to 0 and they're mesmerized by their own ability to understand such.
They don't look the same to me, these days the "IT" decisions are taken by the MBA type guys, with the sole purpose of maximizing their chances to get more visibility, "exceed objectives" and get a larger bonus/promotion/whatever. Sure they're rational too but what do they have in common with CS?
And what is the endgame? Having one single global very powerful Patent Troll company that owns all the patents and collects protection money from anyone making any kind of product? Sounds useful.
Like I would believe that they wouldn't remove it next update, when they implement some new rootkit and DRM scheme for media while exposing my credit card info to the world at large. $ony, you screwed up badly, no one's gonna believe you ever again.
Overdo it and you'll find out that people disconnect their PS3 from the network once for ever and use it just for standalone games and movies. Fat chance to sell anything over PlayStation Store after that...
So how can we express in dollars and cents the value of a certain "intellectual property" asset? Because until we can do that no one can decide if China paid fair price or not on the "technology transfer". Is it "the market value"? If yes, then they sold it at market price ("whatever the buyer can bear"). Or is it that new rule of "as much as we can get by suing for infringements"? RIAA and MPAA have paved the way, but how exactly can you sue the Chinese?
Isn't this magic... once Oracle has touched OpenOffice... Linux users having to chose between installing native OpenOffice or a virtual machine with MS Office... might now prefer the later.....
Idealism is great until you realize that someone has to pay for it, and that someone is always, without exception, YOU.
Sure. My local library is paid from my taxes and has a nice assortment of books and I can discuss with them what they carry or not. They don't bundle advertising and spam with the goods either. Would I want a commercial for profit library instead of it? Hell no. Just imagine what it would be about. Oh wait. We have "adult video rental" shops already.
This is the "lowest bidder" theory applied globally. If it so good as they say would Obama and the government please move into facilities/housing determined by "lowest bid" instead of spending so much money on the White House etc. I'm sure they could find a better deal in Detroit or somewhere.
"I consider flash to be where Java was some years ago. A decent concept and a decent virtual machine, though the API is still somewhat messy and too many people still assosciate it with slow and annoying browser applications."
And when exactly did Java become associated with fast and cool browser applications?
Because they would fall under FCC Telecomunications Act of 1996, section 702. Which would obliterate their existing business.
The "technicality" is that Google wants to act as a telecom / cable company without being listed/regulated as such.

They're testing the "dollar cluster bomb" for the Quantitative Easing 3 phase. Bernanke reckoned that helicopters were not good enough.
