Which is why when I had an idea to do the same thing with my old hardware, I realized just what you astutely noted and threw it all away.
In the amount of time it takes to make one of those you'd only make like $10 an hour as it is....and if I wanted one for myself or someone close to me I'd just make it myself.
1) How was Drink or Die structured and how did you attain, crack, and move warez out to the scene? And how heavily were you as a leader involved in all this?
2) How did the feds infiltrate your group? Were there any clues that you were being watched? Was there a slip-up in not encrypting a certain conversation that ended up being your undoing? At what moment did you realize you had truly been busted?
My first thought was the one line of DeCSS code that unleashed the billions in losses to movie piracy. Oh wait, nevermind. I forgot, those numbers are made up.:D

If this guy wasn't so lazy it could be a boon for his own and the antispy software he's trying to circumvent. because they keep leapfrogging eachother in terms of out-stealthing the other, it gives the customers a reason to upgrade although i couldn't see this being done in incremental releases. but when the other guy releases a new version it's a more than perfect opportunity to do so yourself and start the game all over again.
So instead it seems this guy got lazy and/or took it personally that he can't out-hack the anti-spy software he's trying to circumvent. So he goes and programs a search and destroy. I can't think of a more dangerous precedent this might incur if it becomes accepted practice. Although I must admit it'd be amusing to see two applications try to conduct war on the premise of your hard drive.
On another note this kind of programming reminds me of the multiplayer cheats out there. both camps keep incrementally changing the nature of their cheats/anti-cheats in the exact same fashion excep it's not commercial.
I love what Slashdot has become. If you don't agree with what someone says you can always say they're trolling. I would like to think we're above all this and can argue point-counterpoint rather than descend to that level. Or did I already just do that? Do I care? No. -not since it did more good than bad.
I have seen no mention that he might be the one behind this. I mean let's look at how it very well could've been Saddam since we have been enforcing the no-fly zone with an iron fist since Bush took the office. I mean it hasn't been in the news much because it has become commonplace for us to bomb a radar station here, shoot down a few planes there but it's got to be a major hit to Saddam's ego and I'm sure he's manipulated the media enough that they are crying for the white devil's head.. And it was W's daddy after all that crushed Iraq into the embargoed flat of sand it is today. Face it, the Bush's hate Saddam and Saddam hates the Bush's. So I think there's no reason to count him out of the possible suspects for this crime against America.
aye, MCI is currently been doing a test run of this technology since last year in Memphis atop our tallest building, the Clark Tower. It's not nearly as tall as the Sears so it boasts a range of about 10 miles. It's currently offered to business customers only and can be racheted up to 10 Mbit/sec which is hella bandwidth.
I know what you're thinking now, now I can surf the web from my pda with coverage like that. Well it doesn't quite work that way because this is where the "multipoint" comes in. It requires a line of site recieving antennae to deliver the signal to the desired site and from there a RF coaxial cable is used to channel it to what looks like your typical DSL/Cable modem from guess who- Hybrid.
It's rumored to be soon offered to residential customers but we'll see if the neighboorhood associations will let these antennaes be erected. The business I work for are already not on the best of terms with our landlord since we had put our antennae up on their building. heheheh
Yes the technology is pretty nice since it is yet another broadband provider other than Ma Bell DSL and cable. The difference is that this one has been around for quite some time.
that jon katz is down to watching movies all the time and probably on their dime. the dude's totally flaked out. the least he could do is go back to bs'ing about technology like he usually does.
If you notice, two of the recurring characters (both Star Fleet brass), Admiral Leonard and Commander Williams, are possibly named after TOS actors, Leanard Nimoy and William Shatner.
Good call.. I think some people seem to expect hollywood flicks to be documentaries. If that's the case then you guys should check out "Triumph of the Nerds"- unless of course you don't like Bob Cringely.
I have heard good things about iLife and iCalendar..

2 questions:
:)

Thanks.

It's another "Bitch to Slashdot"!
Man I just can't get enough of these things! Can I join the pity party, too?? Pretty please..
Actually Lucas does own the trademark to the word "light saber". So you're right in that Parks never calls it this for that exact reason.

UnitedLinux isn't so united after all.
how can the first post be redundant?

yeah but don't forget how people made up their minds about O.J. long before there was a verdict.
They're lawyers, what do you expect?
i think a company called 3dfx already tried that and failed.
