    I am not attempting to be humorous. I am hoping, desperately, that my country has not become weak, that it has not lost its resolve, that my friends did not die yesterday in vain. I don't want blood. I want atomic vapor. I want pyrex.

    Unfortunately, a nuclear attack, wouldn't just kill your intended target.
    With changes in weather pattersn (the way the wind blows, etc...), the radiation
    will travel to other countries. Neighboring counties, some that are our allies, are not
    even responsible at all for this attack. Within years, the radiation will even travel back to the US,
    and start killing people here again.

    Great solution... Immediately wipe out your enemy by discinetigrating them
    (where they don't even know what happened), and then kill the rest of the world slowly,
    while at the same time committing suicide. Albeit some form of retaliation is necessary, nuclear war is not the answer,
    and quite frankly never will be the answer to anything.

    Yes, I'm angry and what happened, but I also know that we will bounce back and once again prevail like we have in the past.

    What really pisses me off, is the assholes that were dancing in the streets, cheering and stating that the US got what it deserved.
    Those f*ckers need to go home and get off of US soil. They shouldn't even be here if they hate the US that much.

    Die-hards will insist that one should run a standalone box with dual ethernet cards and the appropriate routing goodies -- but these standalone boxes, at 5-15 watts and a couple hundred bucks, seem like comparatively hassle-free solution. Which one do you use?"

    Easy... FreeBSD. With IPFW and NATD. It's inexpensive, reliable, and works great.

    I have a friend who is on the FreeBSD development/documentation team.
    He is also the sysadmin of dozens of sites (including porn) across the US.
    Using a FreeBSD system, with ipfw, and natd, he gets thousands of hits from
    script-kiddies each and every day trying to get free porn or software.

    Not a single person has gotten through yet.
    When I originally asked him what Firewall he recommended, he told me to use the above
    combination. He also said that he'll put up his FreeBSD firewall against any other firewall
    out there (including CISCO routers)...

    I've seen this same message from you about 15 times. It's totally untrue. You must be using some of "Dubya's Fuzzy Math".

    FreeBSD has been around for 20 years, and hasn't died yet. And I promise you the red ink has flown deeper and brighter during those 20 years, then in the past 2 years.

    I have even asked people on freebsd newsgroups and such if there is a way to install FreeBSD to an ATA100 IDE controller, and they have had no answer.

    Sorry, but I have recently installed brand new ATA100 IDE controllers on 5 different FreeBSD systems. No problems at all. Works great right out of the box.

    It's easy... if someone's spamming you, they have to have some way for you to give them money. Otherwise the spam is pointless. Just follow that and find them.

    That doesn't always work... Some major corporations who spam, hire a service to do the actual spamming. You can contact the corporation, and they'll play stupid by not knowing what you're talking about. Or worse, they will tell you that they have nothing to do with the spammer they've hired.

    ahhh....but can it play Quake?


    Not only can it play Quake, but the emulation is handled better than on Linux.


    I know, I've tested Quake III on both my FreeBSD 4.2-STABLE and 2.4 Linux machines... They both play well, but the Linux copy seemed a bit more sluggish.


    Let's not be childish about this... Both are very good operating systems, FreeBSD is more server based (while leaning to Desktop), and Linux is more Desktop based (while leaning towards server).


    Run FreeBSD as your server and run Linux as your desktop workstation, and you should have no problems.


    Let's face it, it beats Microsoft (of course, so does a pad of paper and a pencil)...

    Most email is much smaller than even the smallest banner ad. It's something you only have to look at once, then delete. Once you delete email, it never bothers you again. It doesn't get in the way of real information.

    I disagree...

    I received the same exact spam message from the same address, over 20 times one day... That's 20 times I had to delete the damn thing...

    Guess what happened the next day? It appeared again another 12 times... Last week, I saw it again 7 times... I have since blocked that email address, but who is to say that the same person doesn't get another email address and start over next week?

    Sure Slashdot has posted mis-information. But they also had the balls to correct it later, and not go hiding in a corner somewhere.


    This is what the *BSD community is upset about... Everyone makes mistakes, but at least Tucows should have corrected their mistake rather than hide.

    One question though: who exactly uses FreeBSD? Just about ever open-sourcer I know prefers Linux.

    I use it. Have for about 6 years now... We have 12 FreeBSD servers at the office, and I have 3 at home. I've tried Linux, and although it is a good package, I just prefer FreeBSD.

    The :CueCat reader is only on loan to you from Digital:Convergence and may be recalled at any time.

    So if DC wanted to recall them, how exactly would they go about it? Knock on everyone's door and ask for their :CueCat?

    I never installed their software, so the only way they would know where I was, is if they ask Rat Shack (You've got questions, get in line, so do we) for it.

    Let's face it, they're not ever going to get those things back (at least not in one piece).

    If ISP's want to use MAPS, that's their right but innocent people who have no involvement with spam get hurt (are unable to send personal e-mail to others who want to receive the message). ISP's using MAPS should be forced to tell their customers that they may not be receiving e-mail that they want because of the MAPS blacklist. If ISP's had to clearly explain this, it would allow the consumer to make a fair decision.

    Err.. My ISP states it up front when you sign up. In addition to that, you can also ask your ISP... They will usually answer you, unless they have something to hide, in which case you don't want them anyway.

    Surely it was obviouse they wern't anti-BSD before they announced they would be doing another BSD book.

    About a 2 years ago, I wrote a letter to Tim O'Reilly (from the O'Reilly Website Ask Tim section).

    I inquired as to why there were no books devoted to FreeBSD (or any other BSD), and asked if there were any plans for some of those?

    The reply I received (not from Tim), was there are already too many books devoted to FreeBSD, go find one somewhere else. (Just a little rude).

    Anyway, the only book devoted entirely to FreeBSD that I have ever found is the FreeBSD Handbook (2nd edition was just released I think)...

    But it would be nice to see some O'Reilly books devoted to FreeBSD.

    Very interesting article, and I agree. I too was an outcast in school. Not many friends, always wearing Heavy Metal t-shirts etc... I also played (and still play) games such as Doom, Quake, Half-Life, etc... Also I watch movies that could be considered violent. However, I don't go ape shit and kill a bunch of people because my life hasn't been the best.


    The real problem is that these kids that go on killing spree's have a more deeper psycological problem. Parents and relatives, and friends however do not understand it and have to blame it on movies, games, internet, magazines, books, anything and everything they can, just so that they won't feel responsible for what their children did... Media is the same way, they interview the parents of the killers and victims, and report that it has to be the online community, games, movies, etc... that is contributing to this massacre. People use that as an excuse when they can't explain the real truth.

    It's so simple -- at least on the face of it. Mindcraft Inc., in a new study commissioned by Microsoft Corp., found that "Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 is 2.5 times faster than Linux as a File Server and 3.7 times faster as a Web Server."

    So how much did Bill pay Mindcraft, Inc. to change the outcome in their favor?

    Did they also mention that NT crashes faster than Linux? Funny - I have a friend that works as tech support at an ISP, they have 4 FreeBSD servers, 6 Linux servers, and about 20 NT servers. Each of the FreeBSD servers holds 300+ users and works like a charm, the Linux boxes hold about 200 users with no problems... NT? Holds about 50 before it starts to crawl... So the company has to have 4 times as many NT servers to accomodate those users who insist on using it. NT is not ready for primetime...

    He says "People really want an operating system that has been tested with all the different applications out there. So that they will work better" Sorry Bill, but my Windows machine crashes a hell of a lot more than my FreeBSD server (uptime: 187 days). And anything that Windoze can run, FreeBSD (and I'm sure Linux) can run.

    Ain't that the truth...

    I have a friend who runs an ISP with FreeBSD Unix machines and NT machines... The FreeBSD servers can hold 300+ users without a hiccup. The NT servers will hold about 50 before it starts to crawl... And people wonder why I dislike Microsoft...
