  1. Re:Hahahah on McCain Picks Gov. Palin As Running Mate · · Score: 1

Except that my choosing a woman with virtually no experience, no credentials, who makes Obama's experience seem like Biden's by comparison, looks like he's pandering to these disaffected Hillary voters... it's an INSULT that he's expecting women to vote for this just because she's "one of them."

And for that matter, ground-based interferometry (http://planetquest.jpl.nasa.gov/technology/techno logy_index.html) is very promising as well.

  3. Re:It is NOT commercial free, or is it? on XM Radio Plans Online Music Service · · Score: 2, Informative

The music channels are commercial free, the other stations do have commercials (in the case of talk/news that is piped in from another source, they need to fill those commercial breaks with something, so why not ads I guess).

  4. Re:Don't do it. on Experiences with Laser Eye Surgery? · · Score: 2, Informative

A year ago, my wife and I went with Dr. Maloney (referenced in parent), and have no regrets. I had 20/200 before, 20/15 now. My wife had her correction done for monovision (one eye is focused for reading, the other for distance), and now she doesn't even need reading glasses.

The trick is, as has been said, is to do your research and be willing to plunk down the extra bucks for someone who really knows what they're doing.

The procedure itself was pretty quick and painless, and this is coming from someone who is HYPER-SQUEAMISH about anything medical. Trust me, if I can go through it without screaming like a little girl, anyone can do it.

The only side effect I have now is that bright lights at night have a little extra glare, but the effect is no worse than when I had glasses (and is only noticeable because everything else is so crystal clear).

  5. Re:IIRC... on A First Look At Meridiani Planum · · Score: 2, Insightful

With the method used to land the rovers, you need a fairly flat stretch of several miles. If one of the airbags hit a large rock, or went over a cliff, it would have ended the trip pretty quickly.

Meridiani Planum is interesting because of the hematite, which under most conditions forms in the presence of water. That makes it a pretty interesting place to visit, IMHO. :)

  8. "You'll ruin your eyes!" on Olympus' Headmounted Display · · Score: 2

Everytime I look at them I always hear my mother telling me not to sit so close to the TV.

  9. Impossible to be happy without knowing pain on The Battlefield Earth Contest · · Score: 1

They say that to truly appreciate happiness, you must first experience pain. So too, in order to truly appreciate a good film, you must first live through an agonizingly bad one first. Where Battlefield Earth truly succeeds where many others have simply sucked, is that after watching it you begin to appreciate other supposed turkeys like Waterworld much more. In fact, the experience--while extremely unpleasant--reduces the "Historical Turkey List" by quite a bit, meaning that with one simple viewing, many of history's worst films become good ones!
