I would bet it's not quality settings but compatibility settings. If it was simply quality settings, they'd give you a nice little checkbox in a configuration utility that says "run everything 15% faster"
I know. But for all the MS attacks coming from the Linux camps, I would expect some noticable differences between the GUIs instead of just the reversal of locations of the "Close" button, and the renaming of the start button.
Interesting. I've tried GIMP and wasn't very happy with the interface. I only spent a short amount of time with it though, and didn't give it a true evaluation.
I'll have to try Linux again when I get over my cheapness and buy a non-winmodem that works in said OS.
I know I'm going to get modded as troll or flamebait, and I'm sure this has been asked before, but...
given the attitudes of the zealots that think Linux software is superior, and that open source is superior to everything closed, then why is this considered such a big deal, and even supported by the Linux community?
Everybody talks about how much Windows and MS software sucks, but then they turn around and do their best to emulate it. I'm not just talking about WINE either, this topic extends into the GUIs. They all take things from Windows.
I looked at the pictures, and I think it looks better that way. If you can extend the cable, you could put a little mounting bracket on the back of the screen, and hang it on the wall. I've always hated using laptops since they aren't ergonomically correct. A keyboard should be almost in your lap, while the monitor should be at eye level. You could also use one of the stands that holds collector Elvis plates.
Back to an ontopic post, I'll give you the standard IANAL, but I would think that they would be liable for known manufacturing defects, but, the warranty probably stipulates that it can be repaired or replaced, but Dell gets to decide which. If they don't replace it, and they've fixed it 4 times, maybe they don't have a solution, aside from having an engineer figure something out. And then actually having the parts manufactured would be fairly cost prohibitive. So it's cheaper to screw you over than to give you a new computer.
BTW, I'm curious as to where and when exactly the hinges just broke. There's no closeup pictures. You're not just being too rough with it are ya?
Ha ha ha, you people are idiots! I'm talking about a fucking bootloader FAILING because a former partition is no longer there. Whether or not the partition is there is irrelevant. The bootloader provides an interface to choose a partition to boot from. In other words, you have to choose a partition and THEN it goes to that pertition. It shouldn't be reading that partition before it loads. What part of this do you people not understand!

I completely agree with your analysis on the attitude of the average Linux zealot though. Usually I try to avoid responding with flames of my own but sometimes I'm just pissed off about enough things that I have to tell the zealots how I feel. Usually I just chalk up the AC repsonse and bad mods to those of 15 year olds that got into Linux because of peer pressure.
But my honest opinion still stands. It's just a bootloader, it should work unless the few sectors is resides in are physically damaged or corrupted.
It won't be long before they install monitoring systems at KFC and Micky D's so they can find out who's ordering the same fast food as the terrorists did.
"9 Filet-o-Fish sandwichs ordered at Drive-Thru. SWARM!! SWARM!!"
Fucking idiot moderators! I'm sure the flamebait mod was based solely on the subject without reading the message.
The article discussed changes in RH7.2 such as moving from LILO to GRUB and I happen to mention my personal experience with it.
I'm sorry oh holy Linux god person. How dare I say part of linux sucks. Please delete my/. account as punishment. Perhaps I deserve to be put on the FBI top 10 list with bin Laden too. Maybe I should register with my local police department as a linux offender.
Had that problem on another machine after killing the linux partition.
So I guess you can call it user error, that when I remove an operating system I don't like, my machine stops responding. However, if MS did that, then everybody would jump all over them as the supreme evil. I've killed a Windows 2000 partition before and their bootloader still worked, and would allow me to boot the Win98 partition.
I should have made the subject something better like "Linux bootloaders suck!".
I installed Mandrake 7.2 awhile ago, which installed grub. It's a real shame that it actually reads data from the Linux partition. I had deleted my Linux partition, leaving my Win98 partition, and my system wouldn't boot anymore, it just locked up on grub with the text "stage 1 stage 2".
Please excuse me, I'm sure I should have dug through the source code and figured out what was happening in stage2, modified the behavior, recompile, re-install, and everything would have been just fine. But since I didn't have 30 days to bother with it, a FDISK/MBR was happy to solve my problem.
Personally, I find that to be fairly pathetic that a boot loader is doing something can crash it.
They weren't trained to fly 747's in their mountain camps. They were trained in America. What's to stop them from coming over here and taking classes at colleges.
They aren't stupid people. Definitely misled, but far from stupid. They are humans and have the same capacity to learn like as we do.
They may not have the capabilities today, but I think 9/11 has taught us to expect the unexpected. We can't wait for them to disable a major cities telephone service, because they would most likely do it to prevent communication during a physical attack. It would me much worse if they could gain remote control of a satellite or the major fiber lines running across the country.
My kid has 2 of those yappy robo-dog things that sit up and show different emotions in their LED eyes. Who's the fucking moron that didn't put an "off" switch on these things, and decided that the battery compartment needed to be screwed on!
Just what I need, my cars going to "wake up" and start honking its horn in the middle of the night because of thunder, and I'll have to wait 20 minutes for it to shutup on its own.
Whatever happened to those hoverboards from "Back to the Future"? Didn't some company claim they worked?
I also remember an article in Omni I think (probably 5 years ago) about somebody that created a spinning top that defied gravity, but it was unstable because they said that gravity is not constant.
Personally, I'd just like to have a SkyCar for now. But maybe a personal shuttle would be kinda fun. They need to get artificial gravity working though, I don't want hook a vacuum to my privates.
Once individual estimated you couldn't take 80 pictures before the battery died. Casio estimates 6 months before it'll die. Here the full press release with a spec sheet.
Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. I've stayed away from the local community college. I have a friend attending there and I looked over her courses. Pretty bland stuff, but she's only in her second year so she's just taking all the required classes.
Just the other night I was looking to signup for some online courses. I'm one of those people that had been programming since the age of 12 and just jumped right into the industry after high school. I'm glad to be here, but now I'm getting bored with computer science which is fairly simple. The more advanced sciences seem pretty interesting to me right now, such as physics and chemistry and even some mathematical theory.
MIT's OpenCourseWare sounds great for me, since I'm looking to learn the information, I don't care about the degree. However, their new system won't be online for several months or longer. Are there any good sites out there that provide good online resources for learning the topics I've mentioned? Pay sites are fine. Please don't say SmartPlanet or About.com
Somehow I don't think this is going to make it into games right away. To get high detail, you still need massive amounts of system and video ram for all the textures and vertices. Besides, you still need designers to implement what they want. Just sitting there and hitting a "randomize" button isn't going to work too well unless you have no clue what you want.

Good points.
Question: what stuff do you use Linux for vs. Windows?

Thank you for proving my point.
You should talk to Jim Allchin, he has some non-biased views on open source and he's an industry leader.
