  1. Re:Nuclear Fusion on Europe Warms to Nuclear Power · · Score: 1

Don't forget that if someone were to blow the tokamak building up (or worse, the tritium storage area) we would be in big trouble. Further, fusion reactors produce radioactive materials (from the tokamak mantle, vacuum chamber and blanket and other components) which are much more radioactive than anything a fission plant produces for a short time. The upside is that they can safely be disposed of after about 100 years rather than the thousands of years fission plants need for decommissioning.

  2. Re:Europeans on Europe Warms to Nuclear Power · · Score: 2, Insightful
The real concern, IMO (I studied electrical engineering), is more with the irradiated powerstation components. Older plants are virtually impossible to dismantle; your only option is to basically bury them on site.

That counts as "waste" in my view and is a huge problem.

  7. Yes! on Total Annihilation Sequel Preview · · Score: 1

I was so addicted to total annihilation that it was the first and only game that I created maps for and played for hours and hours on end. The fact that the maps were not just the product of a game-packaged editor suite but could be any form of bitmap with a heightmap was one of the factors that drew so many people towards customizing the game environment. If you wanted to play on britney spears, that was easily doable given a decently sized scan.

  11. It's a shame it looks like crap. on BBC Launches Linux Powered Weather Format · · Score: 1

While I find the technology behind the system fascinating, BBC weather reports have never looked so shit. The country is covered in dark/light spots which are supposed to display cloud cover (but one has to know that to appreaciate it) instead of just using little clouds or similar. There are no wind directions, all that can be seen is the movement of weather systems... I want vectors!!

Seriously though.. even though it certainly has benefits to work in 3d like this (especially since it does not have to be prerendered) the technology, or at least this implementation, is not yet up to it.

PS: what the hell is up with this? "To confirm you're not a script.." I'd be happy to do this if I didn't need 4 tries to actally decipher the damn thing with the crappy font that was chosen and the criss-cross lines all over the image. I had to try twice now... this time at least the font is readable.

    http://astrosun2.astro.cornell.edu/academics/cours es/astro201/diff_limit.htm

The calculation shown there is a rough estimate for round openings (hence the 1.22). In essence the resolution of a lense is limited by the wavelength of the light being used and the size of the opening. When the opening is too small, whatever you want to observe is "smudged" due to diffraction effects (the spreading out of waves going through a small aperture). There are two ways to counter this: decrease the wavelength (eg use higher energy light such as xrays) or increase the size of the opening. Both remedies can be problematic since high-frequency light can induce damage and large apertures are sub-obtimal for many applications (especially in semiconductor imaging).

Now, it's struck me as very peculiar that the benchmarks where the dual dual core setup from AMD really shines leave out any comparison whatsoever to the Intel dual-core offering. This begs the question whether the person doing this review is a journalist or a marketing represenatative of AMD.

"We did not have time to evaluate the Intel platform with the Intel MKL, the P4 3.0GHz is an older reference measurement." is a very cheap excuse and indicates either lazyness or bribes on the side of AMD... I hate hardware review sites!
