as far as laptops, i personally reckon asus would probably only be second best to toshiba; i prefer their quality as opposed to the garbage offered by hp, acer and dell (i made the mistake of giving a hp desktop machine a first birthday and sound drivers supplied by hp for the specific model and windows version didn't install).

maybe microsoft's "surface" disaster might help some of the oem's shed some of their risk in this area by at least offering the option of preinstalled ubuntu etc.
after all, at the end of the day its not microsoft that they have to answer to; it's their shareholders, and shareholders don't like risk.

if i need help with php, i don't google... i just type php.net in the address bar

stack overflow is good sometimes, but there are a few sites that are good sometimes (depends on the problem). i've also found some gems on site point
if you're googling, also depends a bit on the little summary under the search result link. they will probably differ a bit even if they are about the same issue. if one reads a little more intelligently than the other, and it is somewhere other than stack overflow, i'll click on it
there are plenty of stupid questions and stupid answers on stack overflow, same as any forum site

i guess companies have to cull resumes somehow, and such a question might seem ok for a survey question for applicants before they get to the interview process, but if you're spending time (and money) interviewing someone and you make your decision based on whether they use stack overflow or not, i would assume your staff base may be suffering from a tunnel vision if they all use stack overflow any time they need help.
