  2. That is REALLY old. on Apple Sued Over Unix Trademark · · Score: 1

  9. Cursive is a massive waste of time. on Why Johnny Can't Handwrite · · Score: 2, Interesting
They claimed, back in the day, when they taught it to me in the 1970s, that it was "faster to write that way." WRONG! (I heard this sometimes when getting docked a grade for not using cursive - this was in third grade or so.)

For me printing has always been faster - even when I write legibly (admittedly less often than not). All the curlicues and squiggles just to have your writing look like the Declaration of Independence? There's exactly zero (0) point to it.

  12. Exactly. on More on Oregon and GPS-tracked Gas Taxes · · Score: 4, Insightful
The GPS scheme, in addition to being a massive affront to the privacy of every Oregonian, is a big sloppy blowjob for SUV owners who burn vastly more gallons-per-mile than do users of small cars. It does provide an incentive to reduce traffic, but a gas tax does that as well, and more simply.

This needs to be defeated, soundly.

  13. But that will never pass Congress, and this might. on Public Domain Enhancement Act petition · · Score: 3, Insightful
Think of this as the copyright equivalent to the partial-birth abortion ban, or medical marijuana. (I'm talking political strategy only - please don't flame me on those particular subjects, thanks.) Start with something simple and relatively inoffensive, and then expand it from there.

Either it passes, in which case the law is at least improved from the status quo, or it fails due to strong opposition, in which case the opponents are smoked out and shown to be fools in the public eye.

This is what I don't get. It's clear that having a wireless notebook in class is a big distraction. Wouldn't the savvy student (perhaps what the Ask-Slashbot is wishing to be) want to avoid being distracted and get the best education possible?

I had a laptop in school (Powerbook 145, I'm really dating myself with that reference). I NEVER typed in class - too much trouble! Do kids just type faster now?

I saw the screenshots on insecure.org back in August, and frankly I thought the incident was hilarious. I still think it's hilarious. Did you bite the obvious troll hook, line, and sinker? Yes. Did sdem deserve contra-harassment for his snookering of you? Probably. Did he deserve to have his personal info out for all to see? No. Will this whole thing blow over if you just fess up? Survey says yes.

Of course it's a troll topic. And you're right, you have much better things to do (so do we all!) than post more crap about it. But it's still hilarious, and therefore it will continue to have legs until you come clean(er). In my opinion anyway.

Yes, the EE Times guy mentions that:

One of the biggest hurdles faced by consumer electronics manufacturers designing "connected" consumer devices is developing a business model that allows devices to offer consumers an easy way to purchase content and services. Content and service providers face similar issues. They need solutions for secure digital rights management and a reliable means of getting paid.

But! But! PEOPLE WILL NEVER, EVER USE IT for that purpose. DIVX failed because of this. Apple Music Store is the only DRM enabled anything that is not a total failure, and it's only because Apple fanboys will buy anything. If you think people will "upgrade" to some future DVD requiring Speedpass, I have a few nice bridges in NYC to sell you.
