    Home keys? What are those? I remember using some sort of automated typing tutor years ago and giving up on it after I figured out how to type more efficiently without following any such. (I too have big hands which probably makes the difference.)

    Sounds like the IT guys interviewed here took a cue from the nurses' union, which complains of "understaffing" every time you turn around, so they can get more members.

    Mac asks you for the admin password whenever you install anytyhing. So the user would be asked for the admin password, which is usually a clue that something is going on, instead of having it installed surreptitiously via Internet Explorer browser exploits.

    (The fact that there's no ActiveX for Mac is a huge advantage.)

    Usenet requires tons of bandwidth and storage, and serving it needs decent server hardware. I'm not sure anyone I know still uses it.

    Exactly. And the vast majority of Usenet content is spam, porn, and warez. Why bother with it for the small fraction of users who would use it? A commercial usenet service is just the ticket for those who do want it.

    A few years ago I worked at an ISP and we decided not to offer usenet for exactly this reason. Very, very few customers complained.

    you may notice that the UN's standards on free speech and human rights doesn't seem to be influenced much by China.

    They also have no effect on China. This is why UN control is a bad idea - because it will be incompetent when well-intentioned, and will often be actively malicious, as seen this week with this summit being held in a country with no internet or press freedom.
