The original ejector seat in the F-104 was designed to eject downward because of the high T tail. If you lost the engine on takeoff you had to roll it to survive ejection. Don't know if they changed that later.

According to this F-104 Ejection Seat the reason for firing downwards was because they didn't have powerful enough ejectors to go upwards (which would help clearing the tail) but later on when they were available then upwards egress was used.

I have a great way to protect the power grid against cyber-attacks: Don't connect it to the internet!

I work in Industrial Automation, IE the kind that is used in Power Plants, Manufacturing Plants and basically anything else that is automated. The equipment and software is generally controlled by third party manufacturers. Of course as no software is really bug free, these manufacturers are continually releasing updates (although I have reported some of those practices on The DailyWTF) and they release these updates via .. The .. Internet.

Fine, so how do I get my updates in a timely manner? Perhaps I should download from the public internet and walk the software across the air-gap to the secure Internet?? Well that sounds fine and dandy until you consider that right now (while I am slacking off) I am in VA and working on a manufacturing system in SC, so walking that air-gap would take at least a 6 hour, one-way drive just to get to the plant. So we are talking an extra $1000 on top of the project costs just to do a single, simple update.

That kinda screws my effectiveness to do my job. And that is the base argument of why things are connected to the internet - convenience and cost. But the answer is not go backwards and take all the tools away. The answer is to provide better security on the systems that are connected to the Internet

Two thoughts have crossed my mind while I was writing this:

    • The Internet's root DNS servers are connected to the Internet, but no one is running around screamin that the sky is falling because they are vulnerable. And if they get taken down then when are in deep shit
    • I have said this before, 1/2 dozen guys with SUV's and high powered rifles could easily take down the power grid in a matter of hours

You know it's weird. I'm actually in France right now, living in a dorm with a lot of American foreign students. One of them told me how his father was actually one of the students at Kent State. OH, and after the incident burned a book filled with writings of his classmates so that the government wouldn't find it and record his previous affiliations on his resume.

This guy also tells me how shocked he was after he came to France and was finally able to see the Kent State videos on Youtube (blocked in America of course), and how it's changed his views of his government. According to him, a lot of American youth are extremely nationalistic, and are "brainwashed" by the government. The government hires people to parrot their views of events as if they're normal citizens telling their own personal viewpoints.

He told me he himself used to like his life in America, but now that he's realized the truth about his government, he'd prefer not to go back to America after his study period in France is over.

Not entirely on-topic, and mod me down if you must, but I just thought it was interesting how this American guy has become disconnected from his country and his own people, who seem to be influenced so heavily by their government.

The point I am trying to make is that all governments everywhere try to control their populations one way or another
