Mod parent up. Its not like intel's products are going to become free in the near future. Though I wonder, outside the rampant speculation that "all the money is in customization", how much of their income really comes from hardware sales, soft support contracts, custom hardware configuration, etc. It would really add some insight to this discussion to have those data points.
Here I thought a Satellite had finally captured an alien humanoid who had lit himself on fire (a common tactic for avoiding ninjas (src: http://drmcninja.com/archives/comic/4p15/)).
If you sell to a regime that represses its people, and there is a revolt, you risk being outed. Being outed as a supporter of a government that censors, oppresses, and attacks its own people can't be good for business. It would be nice if this became a trend. It would be more interesting and impressive if some monitoring companies actively marketed their distance from such regimes. "Our competitors support dictators. We do not. Make the ethical choice."
With that logic, why should anyone become a millionaire? If it becomes as easy to reproduce a product as it is to copy a song, should the ability to make money selling something people want vanish?
If only the RIAA paid attention: treating pirates as potential customers: why not (upon finding them) send them marketing emails and specials? "We noticed you've been listening to a lot of Radiohead lately, their latest album just came out, act now for 30% off. Help support a great band, and be a part of their art". It wouldn't work for everyone, but it would soften the RIAA's image and potential bring in some new sales in one clever move.
It's not due process but realistically it needs to be done.

Frankly a single instance of a cop using either illegal coercion or force on a citizen who is only suspected of a crime is an unwelcome sight in a country that aspires to rule of law and liberty.
This is great news, especially since wiretapping statures are commonly used in other states to suppress people's attempts to record police actions.
It's a special concern now that seemingly everyone over the age of 10 is carrying a camera that can take decent stills and HD video
That makes me optimistic, if we see a shift in the law accompanied by the reasonable expectation that *anyone* could potentially be carrying a recoding device, perhaps we will see a moderation in police behavior.
Why is this only useful if they can cure "diseases x,y,z"? Isn't aging the most debilitating disease of all? If it yields any insights into how we age, even those that don't lead directly to cures, there can still be much merit.
I know we are geeks here and "supposed" to hate exercise, but exercise is great. It helps cognitive health(http://www.fi.edu/learn/brain/exercise.html, http://news.illinois.edu/news/04/0216exercise.html) and emotional health (http://news.illinois.edu/news/04/0216exercise.html). Increasing your agility and endurance can save your life in a dangerous situation.
It doesn't have to be boring either. You can practice martial arts or swordsmanship (and what helps you get into a Song of Fire and Ice better than being able to cook some of the dishes and work on swordplay in between books?). Sex counts too (http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/health/sex/better-sex-guide/sex-positions-that-double-as-exercise/), you can get pretty creative in the bedroom. You can grab a bunch of like minded friends, and invent games yourself.
Who cares what they want it for? An organization that reports to a brutal and oppressive government is asking for intelligent volunteers. Does it really matter if our DNA would be used for research or something else? The gall of doing what they did to Google then asking their employees for DNA is mildly shocking. When you consider what they've done to Democracy activists and Tibetans, for them to ask anyone of conscience is even more ridiculous.
The Tank Man is still there on the wiki page linked in the summary.
A simple click through would have revealed that.
While I think this would be awful, and make wikipedia even less desirable a destination, it is rather in line with their "notability" censorship. That said, no need to inflame the issue by claiming the article on the Tiananmen massacre has already had the Tank Man picture removed.
As I'm sure you will go on believe corporations will save us, helping politicians cede ever more ground to them. Do you not see their growing power, or do you not care? Look to the RIAA and MPAA, or BP for examples of how corporations act when might makes right. Politicians, however corrupt they are (and I don't dispute at all that they are), are *supposed* to represent us. Let's get that back!
That's like saying the incident in Japan proves we shouldn't use nuclear power. The only point it proves is Gates' specific implementation had flaws. It doesn't throw out the idea of having govt run education. There's this horribly flawed idea in American politics that "throwing money" at education is a fallacy, when the argument itself is corrupt. Given the sorry state of education funding in much of the country, "throwing money at" is just a conservative way of saying "attempting to properly fund". Perhaps the issue lies with going for "market-based" reforms (http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2347524&cid=36870534). Perhaps Gates' issue was his attempt to "modernize" education without looking at the wealth of studies showing where help is actually needed. Do kids in a poor school district need better teacher/student ratios, or a way to learn online? (And if you say the latter, check your geek privilege at the door and ask about their Internet access). Point is, money spent correctly could help our education system. Starving it of money in order to save it makes as much sense as improving scientific research by cutting funding, or spurring innovation at a company by cutting salaries.
Reverse Gore vs Bush? With an intelligent president and Bush lurking around Texas with the goatee, we'd have been doubly safe. Until Bush invaded Mars to save Earth from global warming. But hey, we'd have gotten to Mars, so, still win win?
Its a two party system where both parties are corrupt, and partially in cahoots. Yet one party hurts people less than the other, so in voting people feel they have some kind of a choice, if not an obligation.
You seem to think private industry and the "free market" will solve problems, and that it is the government alone creating them. We as citizens need to keep pressure on both politicians and corporations to behave in a civilized manner, because without oversight both have proven time and again the potential for abuse.
A number of these drugs have weight-gain as a noted and common side effect. Additional side effects make the head spin, just look up SSRIs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_serotonin_reuptake_inhibitor#Adverse_effects). The side effects are especially nasty for kids. Given how widely these are being prescribed for "off label" uses (that is, uses not originally intended) I really wonder what additional health issues we are introducing into society.
most new government regulations are designed to "fix" problems that were created by lack of government regulation. When the market has been abused (almost always the result of a lack of government regulation), it results in reactions from businesses and government alike that make the market even more susceptible to abuse.
I would be. Mob tactics are never something to advocate or excuse. What I wouldn't object to is the next time something like this occurs, for the people standing in line like sheep to chime in on behalf of the people being abused by the TSA.
A very good question. It looks like she was arrested as she was trying to record the incident (http://www.newsytype.com/8909-woman-arrested-for-tsa-scene/). So trying to record them was what - in the end - actually prompted her arrest.

Actually the closer we get to pinning down the precise mechanism, the closer we get to figuring out ways to block/alter it.
For health's sake, of course.
Hahahaha. WIN. I'm off to find and join an orgy club, and if one doesn't exist, create one.

Frankly, the observation that the media tend to only care about spectacle, and focus in on the spectacle even when it isn't the center of an issue, seems pretty self evident. Not that you need to rely on self evidence when plenty of the usual kind is available. (EG: http://www.alternet.org/environment/134613/media_focus_on_minor_violence%3B_ignore_peaceful_protests_at_global_summit/.)

Fixed that for you.
A very sexy, very trusted list.
