How much do the taxpayers pay to get this regulatory nirvana? What has the SEC done to get back money for the small investor? Was Martha a sacrificial lamb for public consumption while real evil doers remain unpunished? Will the SEC get shareholder/pension holders money back? Does the SEC merely act to protect and consolidate power structures BEYOND what the free market would generate? When we ask the government to do something good, do we get what we pay for, or more taxpayer-funded status quo?
And don't get me started on the Enron-style accounting the feds use to hide the real deficit (social security lock box) or the pyramid scheme called social security that would be illegal if anyone but the feds were running it.
...who managed to muster the will to convince a young collection of states to adopt the craziest political document ever conceived. The constitution may have its flaws (as did the people who conceived it) but it provides a framework for correction that we consistently ignore to our peril. The constitution limits the power of the federal government. When we ignore the constitution for our convenience, the electorate says to the feds that we will accept unlimited government. And we are getting that in spades. Both liberals and conservatives are ensuring that there is no aspect of our lives that will not be regulated by the government. EVERYTHING is becoming political and this is a horrible thing for the future of America. Limited or unlimited government are our 2 choices. I'm choosing limited government.
I'm writing a novel about a terrible near-future where humanity is so fucked up, most people think The Matrix is a good movie. I know it may be too horrible for people to believe this might happen, but I expect the thought will cause many sleepless nights.
I love how these so-called non-partisan laws are used to challenge 3-parties while the majors get their way. In Illinois these laws state qualifying names must be submitted by August 30. The Republican convention was held in Sept. If these laws were equally applied to the Majors, Dubya would not be on the ballot. I'm glad my Libertarians are on the ballot. They do a pretty good job at getting on all ballots. I don't delude myself that they will win because of it, but I hate when these laws only appear to apply to everyone but democrats and republicans.
I bet the cost to the taxpayers to create the artificial barriers to labor rates will be greater than the increased wages those barriers will provide. The world market will find a way and there will always be cheaper labor somewhere.
How many admins have gotten everything secured and free of viruses only to have some yahoo plug in a USB device with infected files? This is not a conspiracy, but an attempt for MS to get real. This is a valid option. Stop with the ravings.

Normally, when people refer to 'traditional' or 'classic' liberals, they're not referring to progressives, but libertarians. Classic liberals are the liberals that no one seems to vote for (with the exception of myself and some other 'rejects from a star trek convention' as Jonah Goldberg (I think) once said). Many are arguing the along neo-classic progressive/conservative split. Libertarians seem to be stuck in the middle (or nowhere in the case of the electorate)
airing such a controvercial movie on the eve of an election helps or hurts the political process by influencing the vote with last-minute emotions rather than thoroughly contemplation.
Since when have the American electorate ever shown thoughtful contemplation? We sell our presidents like soda. The electorate consistently rewards mud slinging (or fails to vote against it) and runs on emotion rather than reason. That's why we get the government we deserve. McCain-Feingold will never change this fact. Until people stop voting for the 2-party duopoly and stop rewarding the lies, this mess will continue.
And anyone that knows Philadelphia Gas Works would never go near this. They offer terrible to non-existent customer service. If you get someone on the phone, they are surly and abusive. They refuse to collect on deadbeats and continuously raise rates on those who do pay to stay afloat. In bed with the corrupt city government (which is just as bad in the support area) so deeply that we can't get rid of them. Anything this city does (besides the center city district) turns to shit, and this will be no exception.
in no way deserve to have all of the business power they have successfully amassed.
I find this statement curious. If you are proposing that MS 'business power' be redistributed more fairly, how would you do it and who would you give it to? Or is it good enough that it somehow just be taken away from MS?
That's why we do it. We are basically unthinking animals with a thinnest gloss of culture. But we still have brains that require very little thinking, and don't depend on language and culture. And all this 'altruistic' punishment goes out the window if the enforcing individual gets the same response from the dopamine system as a cocaine hit. There is nothing altruistic about, merely another selfish response coming from the distant past through the most primitive parts of our brains.
I must admit, it's sad to see the Terminator/Matrix movies get so much play in this genre. These are passable action films that don't stand up to much pondering post viewing.
...you call it anything but speech. Cyberterrorism, cyberstalking, cyberbullying are all codewords that will be used in arguments to abridge our free speech rights.
What about libertarians? I call bullshit on this simplistic non-scientific pap. Slashdot might do better posting articles on the scientific basis for spiritualism.
Does that mean the search results will start to suck beacause the engine gets fat and lazy, sitting around all day smoking pot. I know I would if I had 1.2 billion dollars. Maybe they should put the engine on an allowance to keep it honest.
...you must give Real your email address and allow them to install some executables into your startup folder.
The next Slashdot story will be ready soon, but subscribers can beat the rush and see it early!

Liberals prove themselves equally stupid and as intolerant of dissent as conservatives. Maybe Americans really do get the government we deserve.
If you replaced the word 'afraid' with 'jealous.'
