Apple's under NO requirement to let the Pre work with iTunes, at all. They can deny access to iTunes for any reason. Sega versus Accolade would only serve useful if Apple wouldn't let the Pre work with OS X. Which they are. The Pre works fine with The Missing Sync(even Syncs iTunes library!).
I took a world lit course in college, and the one book that we were recommended was Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell. Great stuff about the Hero monomyth. really puts long book cycles into perspective.
Relying on the sun is a pretty long term solution. If we're still using the sun for energy when the sun is about to expand and burn the planet, we have bigger problems than just energy...
It is your data, but it's Apple's application. It's also Apple's unique USB identifier. It's one thing if Pre users were flashing firmware so their Pres said, "Apple iPod" when connected, it's another when Palm's doing it out of the factory.
Also, yes, there have been repeated posts on how 3rd party developers get this information from OS X and it's certainly easy to get that information under Windows. It wasn't required by Palm to get this data by piggybacking on iTunes. That's just lazy and dishonest.
PS2 had standard USB ports and a firewire port(Some games could use standard USB keyboards and mice, GT4 also could dump screens to a USB thumb drive), also, the AV port was still compatible with the PS1's. PS1 also had an IEEE1284 parallel port and a RS232 serial port.
Ethically, no, Palm shouldn't be breaking their contract with the USB IF so they can sync with iTunes. It's just MP3s and AACs for God's sake, it's not like world peace is on the line here. By doing this, and taking this case to court, if they win, there's going to be jabberwocky, not just among USB device vendors but ANY electronics device vendor who relies on unique IDs.
Imagine if Broadcom or Realtek decided one day that for whatever asinine reason, they shipped integrated NICs with Linksys or 3COM MAC identifiers? Or if VIA shipped out CPUs labeled, "Genuine Intel?"
There really is no excuse for proprietary USB cables. The PSP Go though, also, surprise, supports standard bluetooth out of the box too, so if you don't like the proprietary usb cable, just do it wirelessly
But you're forgetting the PSP Go represents the end user demand for a PSP with digital distribution as the only method for installing media. The end of the UMD drive. You'd be really naive to believe that Sony or any other console vendor would leave that option open for competition.
Christ the slashdot crowd can hold a fucking grudge.
That was 4 years ago. FOUR. Sony quickly stepped away from this. They apologized and offered up replacement discs for people who got shafted in this mess. They did nearly everything to make the situation right.
Compare this to Microsoft. Owning a major segment of the OS market means never having to say you're sorry.
Every PSP since the PSP1000 has used standard USB sockets.
Sony's PlayStation3 has been the most pro-consumer console in the mass market. Standard USB controllers, headsets, keyboards, bluetooth headsets, etc. Not to mention i can hook up my PS3 to a monitor using HDMI to DVI with out the AV cable BLOCKING THE HDMI PORT. Or TOSLINK out to a receiver with a standard TV.
No. Consoles traditionally aren't sold as loss leaders. The Dreamcast was sold as a loss leader, so was the XBox and the PS3. Generally though, consoles are sold not as loss leaders but with razor thin profit margins with the rest of the company's profit made off of game licenses, SDKs, etc.
It's tough to prove either way with out solid documentation about how much a console cost per unit, and how much it sold for at retail. I can tell you this though, Slim PS2s aren't loss leaders, not after the PS2 has been on the market for 9 years.
Big question, who has to shoot first in this one? Han or Greedo?
IMHO, Greedo shot first, I have video evidence.
That's unfair to Terri Schiavo. Terri showed some signs of life.
if they're that close to the edge and that transparently desperate, I doubt anyone's going to move based on any activity they may be doing.
Have they stopped stealing other USB vendor IDs? no? Meh.
YOu're the only one.
Crisp, reliable CRT = big bux.
Crisp, reliable(ish) LCD = cheap.
Libertarian troll, but I'll bite.
Failure to exercise good judgment is impossible if you're not fully aware of the purchase you're making.

Uhhh no.
The article doesn't state which OSes were infected, just how many users were directed to the point of infection.
Mebroot doesn't infect OS X.

This isn't about trademarks or copyrights, this is a matter of USB IF compliance.
Which Palm is squarely out of.

Why should apple provide support for hardware besides it's own?

Addendum:
If you don't like the nonstandard USB port, the COMPLETELY STANDARD Bluetooth transfer option is available too.
PSN has been around longer than the iPhone app store. Sony has been at it longer than Apple.
It's largely a painless process to migrate too, unless you're so hamfisted it's not kosher to shake your hand.

Quite frankly, yes.

See here.
This picture makes me cringe and wonder if something is going to break.
What I want to know is, why do /.'ers shit all over the one console vendor who understands this and doesn't region lock their games?
uhm.

Despite what you may think, it's completely legal to tinker with your own equipment.
What's not legal under the DMCA is redistributing the methods of circumventing copyright protections.
Reminds me of a similar geek funeral.
Albeit for a dog but...

I guess a NeoGeo home cartridge is better than a silly urn. More useful than the fatal fury guts that was in there in the first place.
(IF it was RB FF, FF2, FF3, RB FF2 or RB Special, sure, blasphemy. But it's FF*1*)
I doubt an Apple Tablet wouldn't be anything *but* a standard computing device running on standard OSX. I just wouldn't want to play games on it.
