    With the erosion of religion and its accompanying objections to ending one's own life in most Western Nations (not including the U.S. unfortunately), I would expect to see more options for patients now facing only palliative care.

    When I have no more good days left, and every waking moment is agony or drug-induced, drooling stupor, I would like the option to give these borrowed molecules back to the universe when I am ready...not after my suffering has been prolonged by pointless medical procedure(s).

    I recall how the first release of a new book would come out in hardback, at quite a premium over what the paperback would later go for. It's not that I wouldn't have rather had the hard back library... without paperbacks I'd have had access to far less reading material.

    Nowadays, if it wasn't for the airlines I would rarely read a dead tree novel. During the flight, I tire of explaining my 1st edition Kindle is not a remote control aircraft landing device.

    Governments and those in power have long used propaganda sprinkled with a careful dissemination of the news to keep their tax bases in check.

    In the new World, with a few exceptions, information is freely available to an average World citizen. It would be difficult to bottleneck the pipeline without appearing to be despotic these days.

    What's a person or group with an agenda to do? Flood the places people develop their opinions with facts that are friendlier to their goals. Shitty, clever, malevolent bastards.

    To be fair, the author's message appeared in those paperback novels when the internet was still science fiction.

    IMHO, much of Slashdot's appeal is being exposed to interesting information I wouldn't see otherwise.

    I suspect it's true there are many Muslim's who have nothing to do with organizations like ISIL yet are sympathetic to their fight.

    This medieval death sentence of the Jordanian Pilot secures the number of Arab sympathizers will diminish.

    That is the penalty for many of the less expensive plans: less coverage, fewer roaming agreements, and often, fewer phone upgrade options. Whether or not a bargain plan is right for you depends largely on how and where you will be using your cellular phone/pocket computer.

    The plan discount or upgrade offered with this Verizon program referenced in TFS is unusual in that it offers customers who are already members a discount, too.

    Whether we're talking about my cable provider, phone service company, or even our electricity company, all the great deals are typically for new clientele only...I can normally only benefit from the bulk of them by continually switching providers. This is a refreshing change that I hope becomes trendy.

    Indeed. Popular wisdom requires each herd member's rights to be considered when one us humans exercises an individual right.

    Ironically, opposition to science on this hot button issue is coming from the liberal, upscale, and predominantly female demographic, instead of from the poor, under educated, and religious.

    It makes sense in a way. Protecting ones own interest ahead of the many interests of others smacks of entitlement.

    I appreciate your candid, open opinion much more than your anonymous moderation.

    My grown children are at the house almost every day, and they respect me enough to listen to me some of the time. I kid when I say this, but I'll bet this "disown" thing comes with a smaller grocery bill.

    Sigh. Parenting isn't about making things easy for your kids. That's what your heart wants to do, but without some adversity, no living organism learns to thrive.

    There are certainly some exceptions that merit consideration, such as the one you mention regarding the lack of an accelerated or advanced program for gifted students.

    Whether you're talking private or public, an educational environment with the offspring of other parents is an irreplaceable (at times, admittedly unpleasant) lesson that all young people should be exposed to. It's not always pretty, but it grounds a young human in dealing socially with others for the rest of his/her life.

    There may be no truth at all to the urban legend that young people are optimally suited to learning a language, but I would bet the light bill money that youth is an optimal time to begin studying the intricacies of human interaction.

    I am aware of the studies that indicate an average home-schooled child scores better on testing than an average publicly schooled youngster. Though "homies" are sometimes schooled at home because of their parent's religious beliefs, they are still more likely than average to have attentive, involved parents than the lot of the public system's daytime babysitting service... these students would likely do better than average in the public school system.

    I placed my two little snowflakes in private school for a couple years because of a separation with the other parent: generous pickup times and some after school on-premises child care were the bennies.

    I made management after a couple of years and was afforded more schedule-leeway... bam, right into the public system they went.

    Remember, the most difficult thing in the World to do is be hard on your own kids. It's easy with other peoples kids, the little rat bastards, but do your own kids a favor. A bit of strife is quite the character builder.

    Mass layoffs: All that's legally required of companies over a minimum employment number threshold is that the dismissed are given 60 days notice, or 60 days severance.

    I would heartily recommend you consider the action/adventure education that is the public school system.

    Coddling, though still an individual option, is generally better for the parents than the children.
