    15F in Midland this morning, so I feel your theory of relativity: that's cold here for us.

    Of course, we chuckle when heat waves of 95-100 cripple the Northern cities. We work outside in 100F at least a month's worth of days every summer.

    No, it's not. Appendicitis can be treated with antibiotics and hope, or cured with an appendectomy. Guess which one we do?

    If you have insurance, they do the appendectomy with a quickness.

    An emergency room patient with no coverage might get the antibiotics.

    Now ask yourself, which one gets the better deal?

    Not minority enough for feminists. Men are biologically unnecessary. As soon as women can breed among themselves cheaply and easily, men will be finished.

    I beg to differ sir. The human male IS a huge waste of resources in nature (like the male of nearly any species) precisely because they use food, water, and shelter without bearing replacement young for the species population.

    The prevalence of species with males suggests their inclusion is a survival advantage, despite the draw on resources. Apparently, the genetic diversity we provide is just barely worth the trouble.

    What would be the advantage an unconstitutional spy organisation would have if it possessed informational leverage over a nation's legislators?

    This advantage is far from unprecedented, even in the States. Perhaps J. Edgar tended only to collect information on persons of interest instead of everyone, but he'd have used the interwebs if they were available to him.

    A resident in a neighborhood such as you describe is likely to employ a maid, landscaper, and an occasional contractor. Someone is always home, cleaning, repairing, and so on, so the alarm is seldom armed.

    Many, if not most, of today's class of people who take things that don't belong to them are opportunistic addicts who would stand out and/or feel completely out of place in a neighborhood such as the parent suggests.

    Fact is, this class of thieves is more likely to steal from, in, and around their own class of townfolk.

    Criminals who routinely dine on low-hanging fruit will indeed pass by your well secured abode in search of something less challenging. Hell, a large, mean, barking dog with plenty of "Beware Of" signs will also do the trick.

    A professional burglar, usually lacking the meth addiction, would see your precautions as a sign there is something inside worth taking.

    There has been no impetus for a 'space race' since the bottom fell out of the now defunct Russian Empire.

    The recent off-planet excursions by the Chinese may be viable threat enough to restart one though, he said hopefully.

    It is unfortunate that governments/nations are unable to advance space exploration without perceived military benefit, but that's just the way of it presently.

    Losing a grown child is the unnatural order of things, and parenting is a trial and error process few are properly trained or equipped for.

    Could I have raised him a little differently so this didn't happen? Haunting. To say 'I did my best' is as wholly inaccurate as 'I did my worst' as most all of us fall somewhere in the middle.

    It is pointless self-torture. Perhaps if he'd been taught to react differently in the situation that led to his doom, another earlier timeline close call was not averted.
