I seriously doubt that MS hasn't thought of this before. It's rather obvious, if you think about it. SCO's case is stupid and IBM will probably crush them like the bugs they are.
Just flip all of them over into two separate piles. There's a one-to-one correspondence, then, between the number of tails in both piles (it's infinite, ya know:-).
I hate these "kick 'em in the seat of the pants; I'm going to offend everyone" talks. There's not enough software reuse in the UNIX world? Duh! There's not a whole lot in all of software programming. It's the bane of software engineer's existance!
And, yet, after reading the article, I went to download a bunch of Window Maker dock apps which have reused code.
I want to develop compilers/languages. I've been interested in this for quite a while. It's the only reason I went back to grad school:-). I just threw my hat into the development of G95 (the GNU Fortran 90/95 compiler). I'm also involved in a project which will attempt to show that Java is parallelizable:).
Insanity, wrap your warm and arousing arms around me and keep away the cold, pallid tendrils of sanctioned normalcy. Let the insane create, innovate and explore and leave the sane to sit in their offices counting numbers and selling their soul so they can go home and feed the mouths of their offspring for one more day. And insanity, for whatever humanity you posses, give their children the privilege to avoid normalcy so that they might enjoy life to its fullest.
Depression and bipolar disorder does none of these things. Life is unbearable to people who suffer from them.
Then why didn't you? Surely someone as smart as you must be aware that by obtaining an MSCE your average salary will increase by an average of $X. And for a mere $Y dollars, it certainly seems like a good deal to me! If the majority of/.'s could pass the test, they would for the money. Saying there smart enough for one but not smart enough to take "easy" money is insulting the intelligence of those that read slashdot.
You're assuming that/.ers are only interested in money. I'm not, but I may be in the minority. Quality of my job is really important to me. Programming on Microsoft(tm) equipment (something I used to do) is something I will never do again. It was a horrifying experience of system inadequecies, work-arounds, and banging my head against a wall.
No Thanks! Not for all the tea in China! Unix/Linux is the only operating system I'm interested in working on ever.
The OHE-H is on the same page that they discuss what a linguist does here. You'll notice that the text for the Linguist heading is in italics. Look at the source code and then look at the ALT tag for the image above it.
BTW, how did you come up with WELLD? I'm guessing it has something to do with the weird mapping on one of the nav bars...

I don't like this system for a number of reasons. Here's a few:
It's giving in to the idea that we can't change the fact that this country is a two-party country. It's hardly a repulbic under those circumstances and certainly not a democracy.
Also, we can be fairly certain that the person who won with x% of votes from the Greens, say, will all but ignore that when making their decisions. As it works now, candidates are virtually bought by corporations and are beholden to them and the major number of voters who voted them in.
Which one would Gore likely not mind losing? The 5% Green vote or the 47% Demo vote?
Your system would be a small improvement, but I think that there are better things which should be done.
IMNSHO, I think that Ralph Nader is one of the best candidates for geeks.
I would love nothing more than to see a candidate win which was NOT a Republican or Democrat. Having effectively two choices for President is not what I call having a democracy (or a republic, for that matter). Other countries have many different parties in their parlaiments so the people's views are more fairly represented.
Think about it. How well does the Democratic party or the Republican party reflect your views? With Bill Clinton as Prez, it's become all too apparent that these parties are virtually one in the same.
It's time for a change! I urge people to vote for the person they WANT to be President. Don't vote for the two so-called "front runners" simply because you think your vote doesn't count. It happened in Minnesota and it can happen on a larger scale!
Not to complain, but what if you've been proselytizing for Linux. And porting some of the apps your research group worked on to Linux but still haven't gotten "The Letter" from either RedHat or VA?
Well, for one, the APIs have been released by now. In reading the FoF, MS DID eventually give the APIs Netscape needed to run efficiently, however, it did so WAY too late for Netscape to release their browser within an effective amount of time.
Since they have been owned be private citizens.
A public corporation is, by definition, not a private citizen. And, because there is an implicit, and perfectly legally binding social contract between private citizens and the government under which they live/work, that is how the government gets the right to do what it is doing to Microsoft. Microsoft BROKE THE LAW and now must pay.
IBM OS/2 tried VERY HARD to support Win32. It simply couldn't support all of the thousands of APIs (some of them undocumented) which are in Windows (see the WINE project's ever Alpha product for more info on this).
Apple does not have a monopoly. Period.
Netscape's browser was infinitely better than Windows' browser (IE 1.0, 2.0, 3.0) was at the time. MS specifically refused to give Netscape key APIs so that Netscape could run efficiently on Windows since Netscape gave a potentially platform-independent way of developing software.
MS IE succeeded mostly because MS forced OEMs to install IE with Windows, sometimes exclusively. It was carefully devised to keep people from needing to download another browser. MS eventually made it very difficult and, later, impossible to remove the browser completely from Windows.
Seizing the assets of private citizens? Since when did corporations become citizens? How exactly will breaking up MS put money into the hands of the government?
I think you are missing the point of the article. It is trying to point out that time may not actually exist. That time, as we perceive it, is only a series of previous probabilies in this probability space called the Universe.
The arrow flying towards you will continue on it's path because there's a high degree of probability that it will do so. There is a transition over the multidimentional space surrounding you and the arrow because of these probability waves.
You perceive the differences (as he mentioned in the article) and say one happened in the past and the other in the present. You can even calculate with a high degree of accuracy (but not complete accuracy) that the arrow will strike a certain place on the target (hopefully now you). These perceived differences are time to you and me, cause we're 3-dimentional beings.
Now, the whole argument with the Alpha particles was that Heisenberg thought that all probabilities occur at a quantum level. So there would be a spheroidal wave emitted from the atom. However, there isn't, because we only see on track in the cloud chamber (notice, this is at the atomic level...not something as big as an arrow). The solution was to view the emition of the alpha particle as occuring in n-dimensional space. We see our 3-dimensional view of it and, for us, it looks like a straight line cause that's what where the probability is greatest for us.
As he mentioned, it would be nice to get rid of time altogether, since it seems to break down when we get back to Time 0 (the Big Bang). I'd like to see the math of this...
They've now told us all the FUD they intend to use to "topple" Linux. Most of them are blatantly FUD (like no OEM's guaranteeing 99.9% uptime...when it's only been recently that OEMs started shipping Linux. Or that Linux is unsecure).
Some are damned lies which are easily countered (like Linux not having a threaded kernel).
Others are limitations which only the most powerful user would ever reach (like not being able to access more than 2G of memory). These will most likely be corrected in future releases.
It's nice to know what your enemy is planning for you.:-)
Heh...Actually, there were a lot of features in the original Mosaic that no other web browser has now. Like your bookmarks hanging off your pointer (right-click and there they are), full-screen mode (IE Has this now), annotations, etc. It's bull-sh*t to think that nothing of value can have lots of features unless it's proprietary.
"Yeah. I mean, Microsoft has done great things for computers! They make software which is of high quality and which increase work efficiency. A multi-billion dollar corporation has nothing but our best interests at heart. Anyone who doesn't agree with them is obviously spreading propaganda and should, therefore, be ignored."
No...Only crooked companies "cook" their books. It's extremely illegal. The SEC takes a very dim view of such practices. And investors will be pissed because they were being lulled into buying MS stock on falsehoods...
No...Microsoft is going to really hurt from this if there's anything to it.

They're talking about crackers, not hackers...Goddammit!
I'm so glad that rather large companies are supporting Linux...Linux has finally grown up. *snif*
