Exactly. and do not start with the artist being compensated, and movies created and the planet falling apart. Why is it you think that artist will not be compensated? I went to see HP twice in a movies. Artist would just get LESS compensation. And it is not for you or me to decide how much is enough - market is correcting it. But then again - You can regulate market, that is what effectively going on. And sure you know where it leeds. Popularity of all those P2P means the same as bootleging ment during the Prohibition - "the laws are too strict". They just squeesing extra penny out of your pocket - yes they entitled to do this, it does not mean you can not say 'enough is enough'. And by the way - real artist is hard to make to shut up. Try to remember all those in Soviet Union, who's books were banned and authors send to camps. And the art of those who does it only for money - usualy is not worth anything anyway.
I wonder if anybody knows if is Oracle going to support Mozilla as a browser for it's applications. It can be a big market for Mozilla. It is also the way for Oracle to get rid of the dependency on IE they seems to develop recently.
Make the alcohol illigal and get bootlegers rich, make a pack of smokes cost 50 bucks and see the smuggling become a major business model. There is something deeply wrong with the music industry if such a simple idea is damaging it so badly as they say. Untill they change - P2P will never stop. And I do not believe that we will not have a good artists if they will not be making millions. Real artist is not hard to make sing, real artist is hard to shut up.
Whell, those 'beam me up' thingies could come handy too. It gotta be really slow day on the whole planet today if somebody's bubbling about his fantasies made it here. C'mon people, I'd rather be reading about the world cup.
It just tells you how desperate they are and how bad the situation for Sun is. Of course it is just an attempt to force people to buy new equipment. What they do not understand that those buyers will still have the same budget and will spend it on the "Lintel" systems. You will have less people knowing Solaris and hardware architecture and, in turn, it will affect sales negatively even more. Sun is going down.
As far as I know - robotic mission to the moon was complete success though. It is interesting to observe mass media in the West time after time to concentrate on areas where US were ahead and never opposite. Venus landing of a robotic craft and photographs from the surface is an example of another success of soviet space programm and I am sure there are many others not well known in the West.
As any other marketing campaigh this one had as a goal to make everybody to talk about RDBMS. And the goal is acheaved apparently.
As much as I would want Larry to shut up - he is a stand up comediant somewere deep inside, and you can not shut this type up. So let's at least have fun listening to him.
Looks to me like the right way for honorable minister would be instead of talking to Compaq an MS is to have an open bidding. If windows is cheaper solution then, say, Linux, then so be it.
Is it just me being paranoid or the way she addresses the problem suggests some potential corruption?
1.MS pays for the mail server
2.MS pays for their internet connection.
3.MS pays for the computer tey use.
4.MS pays for their time when they do that
5.Most likely their future earnings depend on MS as well.
Which one of presidential candidates did the same for you during the last elections?
You call it ms bashing? I call it being honest.
You call it old hat? I call it common sense.
Your will not believe how far from reality your speculation is. Only living now in Canada I understand how distorted is the view of Russia here, in North America. If you think that somebody having not too big choice of a food is only dreaming of food, than it is mostly your characteristics . Believe me as a person who red many of those books, there are much more there then you think. I do not even want to start about all stupidity of your post - clearly you have never left your home town. Go ahead and mode me down, but I have to say it - my friend, there are cities in former Soviet Union with history much longer then the history of your whole country. Try to show some respect to the culture so different and reach, you can not even recognize it as a culture.
When time came to upgrade the Oracle database we run for one of our apps we also moved it from NT to Linux. The result - improved performance (this is not measured, just an impression) and easy administration. As professional dba I would highly recommend Linux as an OS for small to mid size Oracle databases - I am very happy with the move.
I work with another database on Linux and do not have any problem or issues with any of the databases. I will never use NT/2000 for another database server again.
The biggest advantage of stored procedure is that it is compiled and can be executed immediately after load into memory and binding variables to it. You also can nicely pin stored procedures into a memory so it will not get booted out and it will perform pretty well.
Correct me if I am wrong, but perl is interpreted language. So what is the point? It will take exactly the same time to execute the thing as I would have the proc outside of the database...
Just my 2C (canadian)
What make you think that those finest scientists were educated in the USA?
A huge chunk of them are immigrants and got their education far from US school system. The reason they came to US is money. Plane and simple.
Helicopters, elecrical generation utilities, nuclear power, military jets, you name it. This is the most stupid discusson I have seen on/. so far. "Jee, how come we have so many well educated people if our education system is so bad?" Duh.
Yea, MS is a pussy cat, and open standards pillar..
What are you talking about?
It drives me nuts - each time somebody sais something bad about MS, there are always another somebody saing, you know - MS is actually has a very good a. OS b. Brouser c.Database d.Hardware e.programing tools d.whatever.
If you like it so much then stay with them and pay them and shut up. There are other people who do not feel this way and they concerned whith MS using their desktop monopoly to control yet another market segment. Is it hard to understand?
It is not about product it is about freedom of choice. How do you know that the product good or bad if you have nothing to compare with? It is that simple, so try to understand other people's point of view.
O C@n@d@!
I have seen some brewing equipment on some back yards - next morning you thinking that the liquid was actualy radioactive. I guess this is the case in this story. I know - it is Saturday, but it is not an excuse for drinking too much before posting.
As I understand you will not be able to see all the code anyway.
I couldn't care less about the way they process the 'Start' button click, and they will not show me the code they use for HD access in the SQL Server 2000 on corresponding OS.
Just another marketing campaign.
I do not get it.
I sell my services and develop for company running their database on Linux.
They just bought Oracle for Linux.
They pay me, they paid Oracle. I am commercial, Oracle is not exactly charity organisation too.
How does GPL kills Oracle and mine business if we (yes, Larry and me:-) ) making money. The only difference that it is not on NT and MS is out of the deal. Larry is happy, I enjoy it, MS is taking a hike.
As I say - mentality is the main problem. MS's squad of napoleons think that if it is bad for them, then it is bad for the whole idustry.
Well, I have an announsment to make - industry will survive.
The main problem with MS is not a technical but mentality. If you see the world through the overgrown ego as they do - expect to have some surprises in life. Their 'Napoleonic' mentality will bring them down.
The response is pointing MS to the right direction, but I doubt some how that Bill or Steve are capable of getting it.
I just wonder, if anybody worked for them - how mach freedom the developers have in Redmond.
dba
I do not get it: To 'elevate' something into space you have to 'hook' the upper part of the elevator to a space station. Then it can use some kind of a motor to pull the cargo. As space station pulls the cargo it goes down itself. For this whole thing to work you would need to use rocket engine to keep the station's orbit. To use rocket engine you need fuel. So what is the difference if you still need to get the fuel and the cargo into the orbit from the level 0?
dba.
What are you talking about?
With Oracle you do not have to keep paying. You have a choice: you can pay every year to get all the upgrades for your product (and by the way tech support is covered with this payment. And I mean real support - they help). But if you do not want to - do not pay, just use your product forever. And you have several plans to choose from. One of the plans - you can by a product for limited period of time. But this is option for you to choose, and you can choose another one. And if you do not like Oracle - go and buy DB2 or Sybase or whatever..
With Sun - you pay for extended warranty and better responce time and again - it is not 'must have' - basic warranty is there by default.
The likelyhood of having of the new version of any of MS OS now depends on you - do you want to spend money now and buy newer version or you prefer to keep the old.
With subscription it still does depend on how much do you spend but time does not depend on you anymore. When time has come PAY or stop using the thing. This is very different with vendors you have mentioned.
Your Redmond friend will decide for you when do you spend money, how often and how much. If you do not like it - take a hike.
I think it greatly limits your choice and that is why it is a bad thing.
I say Taco is right (just can see my carma getting better:-) )
M$ is not the only way to make money in the industry and LOT of people do not nave need nor willingnes to visit M$ on line. You can not blame Cmndr Taco for this - it is a reality not a posture.
And to everybody who just has to mention here how W2K is very stable, well, I glad you like it. For the amount of money you pay for it, it better be good. It will get even better soon. Just wait till.Net will hit the fan.

Finally I can take down my tent under that tower and move in with girl I really love.

Not that I am advertising something, just that is what I know as I work with it:
a.Oracle has its applications 11i released for Linux.
b.You can go for a ASP model - oracle has on it website accounting for some small monthly fee.
cheers.
