I'm not the least bit surprised. I work with some NGOs that provide skill training to those in poverty, and nearly none of the people I know outside of those organizations realize that within 6 miles of their homes, there are thousands upon thousands of people living in poverty and rampant crime (aside from making jokes like "don't go in there - you'll get shot"). These people often can't read, have no education past middle school, and have no skills to use for employment. Most people just drive around these areas, having never really even thought about what's down the streets they never turn onto. People like to cling to the attitude that people in poverty are just milking the system and don't want out, but I guarantee you that within a short drive of where you live there are people in poverty that not only want out, but are working hard at it. You show up there offering to teach them to read or teach them basic interviewing skills or help them pass the GED and you will be inspired by how hard they work. And, you will gain some perspective on how fortunate you are to have been born into the situation you were with the skills and talents you have.

It has a leader, a set of beliefs and a bunch of followers that try to spread it, all the while pointing to the enlightened writings of the leader. I'm not trying to be offensive, but honestly, the group looks largely similar to the Christians they're so fond of bashing.

You seem to have associated Christianity itself with a vocal group of small minded people who are prone to pop off in the press saying things that have little to do with Christianity. I assume that most people that post to Slashdot are reasonably intelligent in spite of the tendency here to be argumentative and often extreme in viewpoint. If so many here are intelligent as the nature of the content would imply, I would expect more of the community to do a modicum of research before stating facts on behalf of something they know so little about. I'm not suggesting that if you do a little research about Christianity you'll suddenly start believing it, but you're doing yourself a disservice to continue to attack something that's not Christianity while calling it Christianity.

You're not getting the difference between data loss (hard drive wiped) and data stolen or missing. Best Buy doesn't know who has her laptop. She is now at a risk for identity fraud. Instead of informing her immediately (there are laws requiring them to do this), they lied to her and jerked her around, putting her at further risk. Rather than offer her less than the laptop was worth, they should have offered her a new laptop and offered to pay for three years of a credit protection service. No reason to defend Best Buy - talk to anyone that's tried to use them. They make a habit out of abusing customers, and it's high time they get some punishment for it.
