Why are people not blaming ApplyYourself? The first thing any of these colleges should have done is canceled their contract with this vendor for screwing up. It's not hte kids fault the data was public. ApplyYourself is the worst college application system of all the ones I encountered. Terrible interface, ugly forms, confusing system, security holes such as these. The number one thing these schools could do to improve the admissions process, is to drop apply yourself.

If anyone wants a free business opportunity - create and sell an admissions package that kicks applyYourself security holed riddled self - I promise you, it wouldn't be hard.

  4. Why there was a time limit. on Treo Bluetooth Bounty Efforts Unsuccessful · · Score: 4, Informative

As Senior Editor of TreoCentral.com, the author of the linked article, and overall the man in charge of the bounty, I think it is fair for me to answer the question of why we had a time limit. I do not believe that I addressed this well in the article, so I'll do it here.

First and foremost, I have other responsibilities come September, and I would have been unable to dedicate the time needed keep this bounty running, answer questions, test possible results, etc. The bounty had an end time because it needed closure at some point - we chose to do a post-collection method, and as each month went by more of the credit cards used for the pledges expired.

Secondly, when I started the bounty I had full knowledge of the next generation Treo, currently rumored to be released at the end of October/early November. At the time, specific accurate info on the next generation Treo was publicly unknown, so "want" for bluetooth on the current Treo was high. However, I was aware that this info would leak sometime over the summer, and it did - through an article I wrote a few weeks later. Subsequently, after photos were leaked in August, support from users who may have wanted this solution waned. I'm not saying that all support disappeared - we have many users who really want bluetooth on their current Treo, but many others are now resolved to simply upgrade to the next generation device. At the time, I thought the next gen Treo was going to be released early september, so the goal was to have the end of the bluetooth bounty somewhat neatly coincide with the introduction of the bluetooth compatible Treo.

It's debatable whether 3 months would have been enough time to complete a driver. I have seen some very complex Palm OS applications developed in a much shorter time period. Even so, if in the last weeks of the bounty a developer said "I'm making progress", I would have asked our users to let us extend it. But no developer did, and as explained in the article, the prospects of having a working driver to our specifications were grim.

I hope people realize how amazing this hardware appears to be, or at least the manufactoring of it. Look - it's a build to order PDA: , the first ever. I have been following this industry for 5 years (I run a large pda website), and never has a company made a true build to order PDA.

This company? Which screen you want, color, b&w, or bistable - a technology that I thought was still in testing! This may be the first use of bistable screens in a large device. (and how about the fact that it's turning the screen into a flat panel speaker - isn't this what synaptics wants to do with the laptop touchpad?)

And look, you can make the case whatever color you want, but also add many modules, like internal bluetooth, fm radio, add internal memory, internal mp3 player, internal microphone. This PDA will have exactly what you need, and not what you don't need.

It's a large device, but it has some cool hardware. I'm not sure about the specilized cpu's, I worry about the speed of this device, and who knows what is going on with the software, or data entry, but this company, at least in manufactoring techniques and componants used, could be changing the PDA industry as we know it. The battery life they claim is incredible! I am excited to hear and learn more about it.

And one more thing - the interfaces are all like the "3D" browseable interfaces we have heard about for awhile, they really are "tactile".. reading through their stuff, it's a huge jump in how we look at the GUI. This company is thinking so far outside the box. WOW.

We have a very active discussion board.. some news.. just a lot of people there... yadda yadda yadda.. It's a great site, but then I'm biased.

In response to your question, yes I use a smartphone everyday. I use it more for a convergence device - I like getting my email, I like browsing the web, and I like the ease of dialing from my 400 some contacts. I used a non smartphone for quite awhile, it was a t68i so I was able to sync it with my mac. I mention this becuase all of my contacts on my palm at the time were synced onto the t68i. Navigating the address book on one of those phones when 400 contacts were loaded was disgusting. The number feature that makes me come back to the treo even when it wrongs me is the ease of use that I have in dialing my outgoing numbers.

I have yet to have a real crash on my Treo (a hard reset for those non palm people). However, different palm apps depending on the quality of the code to crash it for me at least once a week. The Treo automaticly reboots and most of the time reconnects toe the Sprint network. It is annoying, but it is not a dibilitating problem.

The Treo's keyboard is excellent, and I often find myself replying to quick emails and browsing the web. The flexibility it offers is unmatched: no other device can claim as many third party programs as a palm os smartphone can. Plus, there are MANY independent developers who are working (sometimes through our forums nonetheless) to make utilities that address many of the Treo's software shortcomings.

The age for the smartphone is still to come though... The integration is not completly there yet - my calendar is not linked to my phone call history, or my emails... I feel that the true age of the smartphone is still a few generations off software and hardwarewise. The ability to integrate everything is there, yet it is not being done.

Hardwarewise there is a fair amount of negative things to say about the Treo 600 - but PalmOne's software is superior to the competition and for me this makes up for any hardware issues. That said, this fall PalmOne should ship a massivly improved Treo that will make using the Treo much much better.

If you are hesitant about buying into the smartphone market, I would reccomend to wait until fall and get the 3rd generation of these devices.
