>>>corporations are made up of people. And those people have rights.
That's correct. That doesn't mean the corporation should have rights. For example, you can deny Microsoft the right to donate money to (buy) candidates, lobby congress, vote in elections, et cetera without denying the Microsoft employees their own rights to do all of those items.
Or the already-existed copper. We could upgraded 99.9% of american homes from Phone service to DSL service very cheaply..... less than the cost of this 4g plan. (It's how the Japanese became the #2 fastest country)
>>>how many job search sites really work that well over dial up?
All of them. In fact I even go so far as to listen to music and watch youtube over dialup..... job searches sites are almost pure text and no problem at all.
BTW cost for dialup is low: $10 for phoneline $7 for ISP
Well as I said before: This is a bad plan. There's Not enough wireless spectrum to support ~350 million people (plus free TV, radio, et cetera). Maybe if you limited them to 500k each, but that's certainly not a solution.
What we really need is Wired internet to every home.
I also object to the FCC's plan to turn-off free television (i.e. sell off channels 25 and up). I currently enjoy 40+ channels and this plan would drop that number to ~10 channels. I don't feel like being forced into a $70/month cable plan just to see the news and weather. And many americans can't afford it even if they want to.
About the same time MSNBC hired reporters. (Oh that's right - they didn't.) Here was their coverage from the night of the election, "Newly-elected Senator Rand Paul will refuse to raise the Debt ceiling, and he will be personally responsible for creating another depression in 2011." And Rachel Maddow who I used to think was intelligent, replied: "Oh yeah I agree with you. It won't be good."
Wow. And of course there was the altered footage of a black man carrying a rifle at an Obama speech, but MSNBC altered the video (i.e. created propaganda) and overlaid it with reporters discussing "white racists" desiring to assassinate a black president.
Bottom Line:
Both NBC and FOX are poor sources of information. The truth lies somewhere in the middle of their two progressive/liberal and christian/conservative viewpoints.
My father is 70 going on 7. He never grew-up and is used to having everything his way (even the cereal has to be put in the cupboard facing the right way). I call it "spoiled brat" syndrome.
Now suddenly he's retired, with nothing to do, and is whining like a little boy. During the summer he rides his motorcycle around, but in winter he can't do that, so he mopes and complains and curses at the snow.
Consoles used to have real differences. One would run on a Commodore 6502 chip, another on a Z-80, and another on an Intel 8088. Or one might be a self-spun design (Emotion Engine) while another used a Pentium and the third used a PowerPC. That led to different code being run and different results.
But now they ALL run on a powerPC, with virtually identical code. That's why they are all so close to one another in speed, sound, and graphics (except Nintendo which made the conscious decision to limit graphics to 480p but could handle 1080p just as easily as PS3 or X360).
>>>it's nothing special looking back. But for the time, the technology was very advanced
Speak for yourself. I am always impressed what game programmers can squeeze out of sub-100 MHz processors.
Heck even now, watching youtube on a sub-1000 processor is pretty damn impressive. (Points to PowerPC Amiga running at 500 MHz.) Software today is so overbloated, it makes you wonder what could be accomplished with some of the old Atari/Commodore programmers of the 80s (people who knew how to make every bit count).
So yeah I find the old 90s games impressive. 3D polygon graphics on 30 MHz playstations and N64s? Wow.
Personally I'd enjoy a sub-$100 internet box that I could connect to my parents television, and they could view hulu.com. Then I wouldn't have to keep hearing them say, "I'm bored," all winter long. (Actually it's just mostly my dad; my mom reads books.)
And of course they don't care if the Apple is walled - they don't even know how to turn-on a computer, so a simple device where you just "click to play" would be ideal for them. Apple is good at producing this type of software.
I think Google's idea sucks. I have a hard enough time remembering my passwords across ~100 different sites. Now I have to remember random number codes too? C'mon!
Microsoft's soul is Bill Gates soul. They still carry-on the "embrace; extend; extinguish' philosophy he created in the late 80s and into the 90s. In fact - I dare say they've gotten a little worse.
Also the Borg reference is appropriate given that Microsoft assimilates everything it touches. AOL instant messaging, WordPerfect, IBM DOS, Netscape, Mosaic, and so on. I'd like to be able to say I don't use any MS product but windows, but that would be a lie. MS has identified my workplace computer as something they can consume, and now control virtually all the software. (At home I have more options, like Firefox and LibreOffice, but not at work.)
I have an actual recording of the MSNBC "Rand Paul will cause depression" but alas linking to my c: drive would do no good for you...... and it appears the original video was pulled off youtube. Maybe I should re-upload it.
Here's a video link but unfortunately it's blocked by my ISP so I can't verify the actual content. Fast forward past the halfway point to see MSNBC's opinions about how Senator Paul will cause a worldwide depression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyCBUBPcalw
>>>you provide a link to either X's website where they say Y,
Why? Nobody else on/. provides links. "FOX sucks because X, Y, Z" and they never cite a damn thing. Slashdot should rename itself the "Hate FOX website". Of course it slashdot was truly unbiased, it would have BOTH fox and nbc, since they are both shit.
You're lucky. I hear the reports on the news. The trains are *constantly* experiencing delays or stopping on the tracks, and during snowstorms? They don't go anywhere, which often leaves people stranded at work.
As for cars, you can avoid a traffic jam by arriving early, like 6 or 7 am. before everyone else. I rarely get stuck in traffic (which is why it takes me just 30 minutes by car, and my boss 90 minutes by train).
>>>because personal liberties and high speed trains are mutually exclusive!
If the taxrate to sustain the accumulated ~$150,000 per home debt surpasses 50% (i.e. for half a year, you are a serf to Uncle Sam), then YES the two would be mutually exclusive. You are not free if you are indebted to someone else.
For example we could pave the streets with gold. But we choose not to because the burden is not worth it. The cost exceeds the gain.
>>>"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
I don't think either Obama or his white house advisers are stupid. On the other hand, they do act as if money is unlimited. - There are some people who simply don't understand the concept of "cutting spending". I have a niece like that who buys a new color printer or computer every year, a new car every 3 years, and spends almost $300/month on CATV/cell service. She went bankrupt, and STILL spends money like mad. Last I heard her new credit card carries $5000 in unpaid bills.
Obama, Bush, the Demopublicans, and my niece have a lot in common. In contrast my TV is free, my internet is only $15/month, and my cellphone costs $0.00. We need more people like me in Congress - people who know how to cut costs, rather than ring-up the credit card bill.
Probably be cheaper to just tear down the whole house (while saving appliances and other reusable materials) and rebuild a new one based on the PassivHaus model
>>>Why would you not have your cellular phone with you?
Often (like in the office).
And even if I carried it with me, it does not accept text messages (unless I pay for them - which I do not). Of course my Chase card gets around this by sending the passcode to my email address.
>>>Most phones can be charged via USB
Since when? Every phone I've ever seen needed a special power adapter.
I think Google's idea sucks. I have a hard enough time remembering my passwords across ~100 different sites. Now I have to remember random number codes too? C'mon!
No need to invade. We'll just send an open invitation to the Western Provinces - "How would you like to become out 51st through 55th States?"
I know many Canadians in the west who think they are largely ignored by Ottawa (which favors the east), and would be better off in the US. For one thing: They'd gain more power (a voice in the Senate equal to more-populous states).
Please note - I'm not saying I agree with those Western canadians; just repeating what I've heard them say.
I have a former teacher that described finding two kids in the closet, having sex. She said, "They acted like they had not done anything wrong!" She also described the sex going-on at school dances (which led to them being canceled).
Personally if I was a parent I'd WANT to know these things are going on, rather than prevent the teacher from sharing.
>>>corporations are made up of people. And those people have rights.

http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Why-Obamas-98-Wireless-Goal-Is-Empty-Rhetoric-112429
"It seems rather important to note that according to the government's own data, we already technically achieved 98% third generation high speed wireless coverage last year."

Poor people can't afford the ~$600/year of upgrading from Free TV (which will largely turned off) to cellular 4G internet.
They might be able to afford $15/month DSL which is what the Obama admin should be pursuing, especially since the copper wires are already there.
I already read this story.

$50,000 a year is "overpaid"? I make 3 times that (almost) and my job's a hell of a lot easier (and less important) than a teacher's job.
