    Bah.

    My ten-year-old CPU does 3100 megahertz. Things have slowed dramatically since the the 80s and 90s, when speeds increased from approximately 8 megahertz (1980) to 50 megahertz (1990) to 2000 megahertz (2000). If the scaling had continued, we would be at ~20,000 by now. Oh well. So much for Moore's Observation.

    Dear misinformed:

    The Duke lacrosse team did not rape anybody. It was a false accusation and a prime example of how "presume guilt and punish immediately" is a bad idea. The falsely-accused students are now filing lawsuits for damages (like not being able to compete and reach professional level status). Plus a general level of HATE directed by professors to the students. (I always thought profs were secretly bastards at heart.)

    This is why I think the US and EU should block all goods coming from this company (Foxconn) and other companies that treat their employees like prisoners/paid slaves. We can't enforce human rights in China, but we can make the decision to boycott the goods, just as would boycott "blood diamond" companies.

    Sony is doing what all people in power do:
    - find a scapegoat.

    Reminds me of what my boss said, "I will not take the blame for the failure of this board. YOU will." Normally I would agree, but I told you that we should do additional testing to verify it works, but you said 'we don't have time'. LIKEWISE I suspect Sony's employees told them to add additional safety measures, but Sony's managers refused to spend the labor time/cost.

    So instead the managers are deflecting blame from themselves to the users.

    Bastards.

    So what did you want me to see? Only thing that I noticed was the "Creative writing: scifi, mystery, horror degree" ad for full sail university. I don't know... that webpage kinda sucked.

    Opera is great for dialup or cellphone users, allowing image blocking. The built-in turbo feature also disables flash by default, in order to speed-up the webpage download (unless you click on the little "movie" icon to load the video/ad/whatever). Not sure how you would delete the Flash cookies though.

    Reminds me of a story I just read in Asimov's Science Fiction, about a future society that shrunk phones so small, they could be embedded inside index fingers and thumbs. The idea was extremely popular for a few years, until everyone noticed how dumb they look holding their hands to the face & talking. (Like little kids do.) The fad then died off.

    That's true.
    On the other hand, it's still stupid to go to the boss and say, "I have nothing to do." That's like saying, "Please lay me off." It is wiser to simply wait for the next project to come-along and then you'll be busy again.

    ALSO not a wise idea to act as if you have nothing to do. I had one idiot... I mean coworker go to our boss and say, "Things are kinda slow. Do you have something for me to work on?" He was let go on Thursday.

    RCA's patent dates to an era (1940s) when just putting an image on a screen was a challenge, and overlaying it with characters was like magic.

    They deserved the credit for putting letters on 50s-era TVs just as much as they deserved credit for developing NTSC-II (i.e. color). If you put in years of effort into experimentation, you deserve the reward of a temporary monopoly on your discovery. IMHO.

    - Atari VCS/2600
    - Nintendo ES
    - Super Nintendo
    - PS1
    - PS2
    - Wii

    While the most advanced consoles land in second or third place:
    - Intellivision
    - Sega MS
    - Genesis/megadrive
    - N64
    - Xbox
    - X360

    My Paypal contract said the same thing, until a judge threw it in the trash. He said that contracts may not supersede consumer protections provided by law, and eventually forced Paypal to issue $100 refunds to all their customers (at least the ones who made the class action claim).

    When a contract changes, it becomes null-and-void until both parties agree to the changes. Most times the "agreement" is automatic within 30 days, but during that 30 days you have the option to back out.

    And of course when you do that, the company will just drop you as a customer. No fine has to be paid, but you also have no service.

    Aside -

    I like when companies use the word "lifetime" as in "You shall pay $15/month for life!" until they decide to redefine life as ending next month, and raise your rates. Or else claim that lower-level tier has been discontinued, and the next tier is $45. Bastards.
