would it be more ethical if i said the reason i didn't want to work anymore was so i could just geek out all day? c'mon...spending all of your money on your girlfriend might be worth it if she turned into as much of a geek as you;)
I think you'd have to be pretty pathetic and desperate to go to SV from all over the country to find a man. Not that there aren't plenty of good men there-but that's a lot of effort to go through just for a man. And if I were one of those guys, I'd feel pretty insulted that women were being lured to me by the promise of a stable, large disposable income.
But I have to admit, every great once in awhile (after I've become frustrated with my job, for example) I do spend a second to ponder the possibility of finding a "sugar daddy". And being that I'm a geekgrrl, I imagine it wouldn't be *too* hard.
C'mon guys, you know you would do it too if it were as easy for you as it is for us.
(before I get flamed....*please* realize that I would never actually seek out someone for their money. I'd lose a lot of respect for myself if I wasn't supporting myself)
Funny, I don't remember ever saying I thought this was a good idea or that I liked the music industry as it stands today. Its interesting what some people will assume based on one 'keep in mind' statement.
I made the statement because I knew some people would misinterpret the tax to be on music cds (I have already seen some people make that assumption).
They are just talking about a tax on blank, recordable cds. This isn't going to affect the price of a music cd. And really, its still a lot cheaper than going out and actually paying full price for the real (legal) thing.
Based on what you have said and what seems apparent about the show and how the producers manipulate the environment, I'm wondering if you have considered that perhaps the girl you were involved with for one night was encouraged to be seduced by you from the producers?
So...maybe the whole line about hacking into their system and finding out information about her had nothing to do with what went on later.
umm...maybe I'm really out of the loop-but what does k-rad mean? someone recently called me that and i wasn't sure whether or not it was a compliment....
I'm sure we'll be seeing 'big announcements' like this at every Linux show from now on. If I remember correctly, they are scheduling 4 Linux Worlds a year, and then there's all the other shows. That's a lot of announcements. And of course every business wants to make bigger and better news to smother all of the other announcements. It seems as though it wouldn't take very long for the 'big news' to become not so big anymore. Eventually, they could announce that Bill Gates was installing Slackware at home and we may not even blink. Ok. Maybe we won't be *that* numb.
It will be hard to beat the success of the RedHat parties. Will Andover be bringing in pretty girls to get all the geeks dancing once they've had a few to drink?
The weather was spectacular. Although for me, being from out of state, it wasn't a new thing. It was interesting to see how Seattlites reacted-like it was the end of the world or something. Apparently, not even Microsoft was prepared....
How can they expect anyone to invest in a company that doesn't even have a business plan? Are they expecting us to come up with a business for them?
Yeah, we can watch them. But watch them do what, exactly?
I think this would be really neat had there been an actual business created already.
And what's with all the references to the girls? Are they talking about the girls on the web cam? I certainly hope they aren't the only company assets...
The issue of rights and ownership of the document is an important one. Although you did mention it, it was hardly given the amount of space it deserves in a piece like this. Rather than it being some small issue to tack onto the bottom of your proposal, it should in fact be addressed first, before getting into the logistics of that matter.
It is fine and noble to say that these ideas should belong solely to the author, but it has not been the case thus far in the print publishing world.
The fact of the matter is that these journals will not go away, even with the creation of a public forum online. So, while they still exist, they will do whatever they can to keep their rights over this information. One idea might be for them to 'open' the electronic version of the paper, but retain print rights.
So it sounds like a good idea once you have the issue of rights settled, but I think you should concentrate more on convincing the community that they will want their information to be 'open' before spending too much time planning the logistics of it.
Non-profit organizations like FSF and SPI are better suited for the job of brokering free-software work, from a financial standpoint and a public responsibility standpoint as well.
I agree. However, I have yet to hear of either of these organizations taking up this role.
The argument seems a little illogical to me to say that this project is starting out on the wrong foot because 2 other organizations you mention could do a better job. Especially when taken into account that neither of them *have* done this job.
It does, however, make sense to say that they are starting out on the wrong foot just for being for-profit.
You know, this looks like it could be a really useful thing. Its too bad that I tend to be cynical now that everyone seems to be coming up with pretty sites for something useful, to ultimately put more money in their pocket books. Would HP be sponsoring this if there wasn't money in it? I doubt it.
Actually, I'm not. But thanks for trying to be a mind reader.
Where money comes from does in fact matter to some people. I don't know how willing I would be to accept an award from an award institution-no matter how reputable-that I knew got some of its money from the KKK. That's an extreme, I realize, but I'm trying to make a point.
Although Micro$oft may have had nothing to do with who received the award, RMS might care that he was taking money from them. But I'm not sure if he's that kind of guy...that's why I asked
um, i said every great once in a while for a second i ponder the idea. and the reason i wouldn't is because i couldn't respect myself.
try reading it again.

That's pretty cool.
I can see his next book-The Penguin Hour:The story behind the OS (now a made for tv movie!)

its not really that creative, since its completely transparent. marketing is one thing, delivering an actual useful product is another.
yes, they'll be getting a lot of traffic, but you'll notice the almost entirely negative reaction.

...or perhaps you are merely trying to validate your perusal of the seattle weekly personal ads?

I'm glad somebody got it. maybe if i'd added a "first post" at the end it would have been the perfect last line? -Lisa
I feel like a geek for *not* having one.
Now, if I got one, I'd just be a wannabe.

Otherwise, I heartily agree with the rest.

Usually, I find Linux humor quite dull and unoriginal, both in content and presentation. This was refreshingly hilarious!
Nice job.

That part about how his parents would be mad about the FBI taking their computers was especially hilarious.

I don't think its a very cool thing to do, but tons of companies do it every day.
