But that was the one that was about a straight white male... Surely if diversity was the problem then the other three new-era films would have flopped and Solo would have been a huge success.

Maybe it's just not a very good film, or we have reached Star Wars saturation point.

She Hulk was a riff on the "Ms. Male Character" trope that was common in comics around then. The most obvious examples are characters like Supergirl and Batgirl. For some reason Marvel has less of them.

No, I don't. Can you provide a link?

I can provide some counter points though. Check the IMDB user reviews of Black Panther and Wonder Woman, both great movies and commercially successful. Lots of people with suspiciously similar reviews claiming those movies are racist/sexist respectively.

The original idea with Buffy was to subvert the "dumb blond who dies in the first 5 minutes" trope. We have kinda moved past that since the 90s, thanks in part to characters like Buffy. So now the equivalent is the "token black character who dies in the first 5 minutes" trope.

  7. Re:US should have this, too on Government Spells Out Plans For UK-Wide Full Fibre By 2033 (bbc.co.uk) · · Score: 0

In most places the limited roll out of fibre is due to incumbents. They have a network that is made of slow copper, and little incentive to upgrade it. No-one else is willing to install last mile infrastructure to compete with them.

There are ways to solve this. You can make the last mile much cheaper. In Japan you can get fibre that is attached to power distribution poles, for example. You can force the opening up of cable tunnels.

Another option is to force the upgrades to be done by the incumbent and for them to offer the network to other ISPs. That's what the UK is doing. So far it has failed to deliver decent speeds or choices. It's not properly unbundled either, for example you can't have ADSL without a land line.

Finally the government can build its own network. Doesn't have to be with public money necessarily, the government could contract it out and let the building collect rent from ISPs.

Multiple users. If you have the UK average speed (16mbps) then downloading some patches will probably make Netflix drop to 240p and buffer like crazy. Video calls will lag and stutter.

It's not just about raw download speed, it's about having enough bandwidth to keep interactive and streaming services working properly.

  9. Do you think those people burning wood and cattle dung for heat will keep doing that indefinitely?

Of course their nations will develop. Immigration isn't going to make any significant difference. What matters is that we help developing nations avoid the mistakes we made with fossil fuels.

People feeling from wars have an acute problem that will either eventually be fixed or will rumble on for decades. We (the developed world) are often responsible for both starting those wars and for allowing them to continue for so long. If you want to stop refugees fleeing those countries then change your foreign policy. In the mean time take responsibility.

Security on MCUs isn't actually too hard. I implemented an RSA based system for encrypted GPS logging as a hobby project a while back, it wasn't much work. That was an 8 bit MCU which admittedly had AES acceleration (not uncommon now).

Thing is most of these devices are actually running some kind of RTOS on a 32 bit ARM, with crypto acceleration to support the WiFi stack. ARM SoCs with WiFi are super cheap now, well under $1 in quantity, e.g. the ESP8266. The manufacturers often offer free modules to handle things like certificate checks and HTTPS.

The reason this stuff doesn't get used is that most of the developers don't understand it.

  11. Someone should build a Raspberry Pi firewall for IoT devices. It would basically block everything by default, and then have simple check boxes for different IoT devices that open up access to the necessary IPs/domains. Settings contributed by the community, similar to ad-blockers.

Throw in a bit of rate limiting. Second ethernet port can be a cheap USB thing, doesn't need to be fast. Build in WiFi so it can act as an AP. Could be a popular project, like the PiHole.

  12. A dedicated firewall box for IoT is a good idea. You can just block everything except the few IP addresses they need to contact. Hard coded DNS can be fixed by simply re-routing those IP addresses to your own server.

There are a few really easy things we could do to lessen the environmental impact of deliveries.

Deliver stuff to where people work. Most businesses get a lot of deliveries anyway, and are often located close to other businesses and delivery locations.

Deliver stuff to lockers at shopping centres or local shops. Incentivise with slightly lower costs. People can walk to the local shop or were going to the shopping centre anyway. That might also help keep shopping centres alive.

Creators have used the internet to get closer to fans and involve them more directly in their work. Fans feeling some connection to or ownership of the game/movie/book helps sales.

The problem is that some fans take it too far, and start to feel entitled. They get upset when decisions are made that they don't like, or when things fail to live up to their expectations. See the harassment of Star Wars actors as an example, and not just the new bunch either - Carrie Fisher got it too.

Back in the day guys like Peter Molyneux were just the same, massively over-promising and under-delivering. Difference was that there was distance between them and the players, and people just returned their games or stopped buying them.
