    Batteries are already good enough. It's just a question of time until prices come down even further and infrastructure gets built up.

    Even if the government didn't set this target, by 2040 most cars on the market would be EVs anyway. The target just signals we won't be that far behind the rest of Europe and that infrastructure investments enjoy some government backing.

    That's why it won't be abandoned. People with money will invest, and they won't allow their bought and paid for politicians to screw them.

  3. I'm thinking of the new maglev shinkansen. It's reasonably priced, fully expected to be profitable and not going to cost much more than the current ones to ride. They expect it to hit 1000kph in due course too.

  4. They could have been where Tesla is now if they had put all the latest r&d money into EVs. They are only now finally making decent ones.

    Could even have put money into hybrid technology like Toyota did.

    But instead they decided to cheat.

    He would probably argue that US prison would violate his human rights, especially at his age. That's enough to stop extradition.

  6. Just look at brexit to see what a terrible idea leaving is. It's not simple, it will carry huge costs, and you won't get all the great benefits of the union that you have now.

    This is also how you fight back. Separate profiles for everything, and loads of fake ones with harmless misinformation that obviously isn't you when anyone checks.

    A while back someone demonstrated AI that could build brand new faces from a dataset of celebrities. Sounds like a great source of fake profile images. Unfortunately it will also be used by the Russian and 4chan trolls...

    Windows laptops are competitive on battery life. Some, like the LG Gram, even out perform Macs, and the battery is easy to replace too.

  9. Keyboards are one of the most common points of failure, since they get all the dust and liquid in them. Accidents happen.

    Having to replace the whole top half of the body is madness. Much rather get a Lenovo where I can just order a replacement and fit it myself in a few minutes (handy if you want to change layout too).

  10. It doesn't seem to offer anything over maglev, while having many disadvantages. Maglev is proven technology, cheaper and can carry a lot more. Speed is about the same.

    Next time you apply for a job, try changing your CV to say "Mohammed". Every time this is tested, the results are the same.

    Unfortunately, it still matters. It's very hard to prove individual cases though, so the law isn't all that effective.

  18. The problem is that individuals' wages don't increase because of rent increases. Most people can't go to their boss and say "hay, my landlord put the rent up, I need you to give me a raise to pay for it."

    Instead they are forced out and replaced with workers who can demand higher wages due to skills/experience. And then they cycle repeats.

    This is bad for everyone.

  19. People who are already there get priority, because it's worse for them if they have to move. Might lose their job, kids have to change school etc.

    I read it and it really doesn't. Most of it is technical stuff, then this complete non-sequitor at the end without and explanation.

    He seems to think he can't say it's discriminatory, but the code of conduct says he can and no one has complained about him doing so.

    This seems to be yet another misunderstanding. I'm not sure what he thought the code of conduct said but it's hard to see what he could possibly be upset about in it.

    Lattner contributed over 5x as much as this guy, and supported all this stuff. He was there long before too.
