Low paid jobs are corporate welfare. They want employees but don't want to pay enough for them to remain alive and healthy and live near where the labour is required, so they rely on the government to make up the shortfall.

It's pure greed. If they are forced to pay more they won't say "okay, let's just shot down the whole thing", they will simply make a bit less profit or raise prices. They will adjust their business model, or realize that it is not viable without government subsidy.

Yeah, but you also have to remember that every time a rule is introduced someone lost the opportunity to make some profit, had to pay for some safety gear, was forced to fit a filter, had to internalize a cost. That regulation injured someone's wallet. It was enacted to reduce someone's bottom line.

And that someone was probably a major donor. /sarcasm

The story submission system has been broken for a while. Everything you submit gets marked as spam, and then it stops you posting comments too, and you have to email the site staff to get it fixed but your submission remains in the spam folder anyway... So naturally people got fed up of being punished for submitting stuff.

Allegedly it's fixed now, but I have not tried it yet. Maybe later today.

They are like a club with an open mic. They might allow most people but can certainly ban anyone they want to as well.

The "public space" argument is mostly coming from the freeze peach crowd, but they have little credibility. Guys like Carl Benjamin, aka Sargon, complain about being silenced while raking in nearly $8000/month from Patreon and having nearly 800,000 subscribers on YouTube alone. Sure, he was banned from Twitter, but simply moved to Gab and is now more popular then ever.

So given that he clearly isn't being silenced in any meaningful way, he has to claim that Twitter is a public space and he permaban is a global outrage and 1st amendment violation.

  11. It's true that he can easily evade this if he wants to, although it is kinda embarrassing to be effectively barred from visiting a country because you don't want to answer questions about the scandals you presided over.

Considering how well he came off from the US hearings I think he might come. Our MPs are pretty tame really.

To be fair you are mixing up Google and Facebook there, and Google is still far more liberal in terms of what it allows on YouTube. There are a lot of channels far more extreme than Diamond and Silk. It has to be said that SoundCloud is quite good too with hosting far right podcasts, although maybe because they get less attention.

But yes, commercial realities hit YouTube. They make money from ads, and advertisers are more discerning than they had hoped.

  17. A lot of this hostility is coming from Shog9. Ever since they hired that guy he has been ruining SO and encouraging other moderators to do the same. But you beg the question, why should people have to hide their identity online? If SE were an egalitarian utopia then surely it wouldn't matter. So perhaps we can at least agree that there is a problem.
