The DIY "PowerWall" guys have done a lot to make recycling batteries easier and cheaper. That includes developing things like 3D printed brackets and open source power controllers.

It's time to start thinking about having every lithium battery tested and if possible re-used instead of being discarded or broken down. Most batteries that are "dead" are actually mostly fine, it's just one or two bad cells. Not only will it prevent those cells becoming waste, it will build up the grid's battery backup capability faster.

  2. I'm reminded of the recent Ghost in the Shell movie. Altered Carbon kinda did it too, but I think it was probably just them wanting to reduce the amount of body-swapping to make it easier for the viewer to follow who is who.

  3. It will be interesting to see if Amazon tries to change the setting to the west. The novel deals with events that are well known in China but which most people in Amazon's markets have never heard of. Plus, there is a reluctance among TV execs to have a Chinese lead with a cast of Chinese actors.

  4. I wonder if you could get a selfie camera behind the screen too. With an LCD it can go fully transparent, but the camera would make the backlighting uneven. That could be solved with some kind of movable cover or reflective one-way surface. Would probably not meet the standards for high end image reproduction but might be enough just for the status bar area.

  7. Most of us have busy lives and limited free time. Rather than just wondering around aimlessly outside, we prefer to meet friends and be sociable. Unfortunately, Facebook is the way a lot of this stuff gets organized now, and if you are not on it you can become isolated.

Even when I'm inside and doing hobby stuff, my life is made better by social media. Not Facebook so much, but there is a lot of interesting tech discussion on forums, Twitter, Google+ and even Slashdot.

It would be great if we could replace Facebook with something better. Just being outside isn't nearly as fulfilling or educational as being social.

  9. Cambridge Analytica broke not only the Facebook ToS, they broke the law in the UK and maybe the US. The broke the law to assist one side in the EU membership referendum, and one side in the US election.

Obama's campaign stuck to the rules, they used their own app and didn't harvest data on friends who had not given permission.

  10. It's exploitation of young men, pure and simple.

What I can't understand is why some people blame anyone but the employers for this. As if it's a good thing almost, and older guys/women are to blame for not sacrificing their health.

    It's not a security issue, it's a UX issue.

Client tries to access an ad server. Server can't be contacted - DNS lookup failed, sever didn't respond, network is blocking it for some reason.

Does the client refuse to play any more music, making the user think Spotify is unreliable, or does it just carry on without the ad?

    It's an unwinnable situation.

Trek's depiction of the transporter is inconsistent to say the least. It's been shown that people in the transporter are conscious the whole time, but also that they can be held unconscious in the pattern buffer indefinitely.

The transporter has cloned people, de-aged and re-aged them, merged two people into one being and un-merged them again...

It's an existential question. There is no clear answer.

How you do define a life? It can't be consciousness unless you think sleep is death too. If you die but are then revived are you the same person?

You could say your life is your brain functioning, but the transporter (as depicted on Star Trek) keeps you conscious during the process.
