If it is cross cultural how do you explain places like Iran where more than half the STEM graduates are female? How about China where there is a much higher proportion of female engineers in the Shenzhen area than in most western countries?
And how do you explain that in the US the number of women in CS peaked in the 80s and has declined since? The usual answer is that men are dumb and women got out of CS when it turned bad, but if you want to go with that I'd ask you to state where you think they went as an alternative to this relatively well paid career.

The current high speed trains in Japan, doing 320 kph (limited due to noise), are actually very highly automated.
At that speed the driver can't really see much. Signs and signals zip by so fast you can't read them, so they are all duplicated electronically in the cabin anyway. There are automated emergency systems too, which can apply brakes if the train is speeding or when there is an external problem like an earthquake or stopped train on the line. The trains run not much further than the minimum safe distance apart, largely governed by the reaction speed of the automated systems and the stopping distance of the train (a few kilometres).
The drivers are also trained to act like robots in the event of an emergency, or really any anomaly. They are not allowed to use their initiative at all, they must look the problem up in a book and follow the instructions precisely.
Even at the stations there is an automated system that helps the driver stop in precisely the right place. Everyone lines up by white markings on the platforms and the doors end up exactly opposite them, to within a few centimetres max. That makes boarding and disembarkation very efficient and non-terminal stops only need to be 30 seconds.
You might wonder what the point of the drivers is then. Well, aside from reassuring the passengers, they do actually control the train (within the parameters allowed by the automation) and will make adjustments to keep it on time. If the train is 3 seconds behind they can accelerate a tiny bit harder or cruise 2 kph faster to make it up. But the main thing is that it means the automated systems don't have to be certified as absolutely fail-safe for fully driverless operation.
Also, and this is the reason why he got fired, that difference is minor and the author of the study he cited for it has said publicly that the conclusion it affects women's performance in or preference for engineering jobs is unwarranted.
It's a very old argument. It's odd that Damore didn't discover it and read the extensive debunkings that have been written over the centuries, and particularly in the modern era. It's almost as if he had a conclusion and googled evidence to support it.
This is just dumb, from a pure engineering standpoint. If you noticed that one tyre on a car was getting excessive wear, it would be idiotic to demand that in the name of equality a solution for all four tyres is found. An engineer will try to identify what differentiates that tyre and address the issue.
More over, often by identifying these differences you get some insight that helps the less affected group too. Maybe you find that there is an issue with the suspension, and gain greater understanding of what causes tyre wear, and how to extend the life of our all four.
I dunno, they have sanctioned Logan Paul in the past, dropping him from their premium services and suspending his ad revenue temporarily. He's hardly the only one either, they have closed lots of popular, high revenue channels. Especially those aimed at children, like those creepy Spiderman/Elsa videos.
Substitutions for inferior parts definitely happen. One place I worked we ended up buying components ourselves and sending them to the manufacturer, because every time we asked any of the several we used to source some expensive, rare bits they ended up with fakes and nothing worked.
We even ended up having to specify certain fluxes and solders and reflow ovens because otherwise they would switch to the cheap stuff after a while and quality would go through the floor.

As for fake iPhones, there is no need. Go to Shenzhen and wonder around the massive shopping centres that are nothing but people with rework stations refurbing phones, mostly Apple ones. If you want a cheap iPhone X they will sell you one that has had whatever was wrong with it fixed, in mint condition with all the accessories and box.
Making new ones is risky and would probably be noticed pretty quickly as each phone has a unique serial number that is used for Apple online services. Refurbs are legal and besides which the hot phones in China are from Xaomi and Huawei now, the iPhone is a bit "cheap" because the market is saturated with refurbs and hand-me-downs. Even Apple admitted that.
All those things happen in the west as well. And those responsible go out of business eventually, because they get a bad rep. Then they try to start again with a different name, but eventually people caught on.
These days if you want high quality, secure manufacturing in China it's available. You might pay a bit more for it. Up to you, go with the cheapest or go with a reputable manufacturer. Do you think Foxconn has 3rd shifts making iPhones?

And since Foxconn builds Apple products for them they likely learned a lot from Foxconn and took their lead on a lot of the design decisions. Every time a new material or new way of assembling something is introduced, you can bet that it was Foxconn that did a lot of the R&D, quite possibly even originated the idea.
Of course that's completely normal with US companies too. For example the touch wheel on the iPod was invented by Synaptec, they just couldn't find anyone interested in buying it until Apple came along.
Modern Chinese smart phones often introduce features before Apple does, and Apple copies them. Wireless charging, for example, became a staple of Chinese high end phones long before Apple adopted it. Dual cameras too, although Korea gets some credit there as well.
My money goes on a conspiracy theorist who believes the old far right favourite about everyone else being a far left / Jewish conspiracy. Politicians, the "mainstream media", basically anyone who isn't with them.
The think that if they can just expose it people will wake up and realise they are being lied to, and the revolution will begin. Hence leaks are their favourite tool.
