That's all fine in theory, except practically every USB chipset in use today does not take advantage of that architecture, i.e. they offload the difficult stuff to the CPU, because software is cheaper than hardware.
Without open source, Apple will find itself in the same position as today's Microsoft in seven years
Hated, ridiculed, and filthy fucking rich ?
Welcome to the 21st century. People don't buy iPhones for their open-source platform, people buy iPhones because they are a hip status symbol.
When someone whips out a non-Apple touch phone (or a Blackberry), people say "Oh you got the cheap shitty iPhone knockoff", as their face contorts into the shape of Steve Jobs' rectum.
People buy Apple for the brand and what it represents. If you want your phone to run open-source firmware, you're free to buy a different phone, because the iPhone isn't going to do it, ever.
Hey, most of the developers I've known are complete imbeciles. You know, the ones who never ask questions but always have answers.
But for some reason, I have a bit more faith in kernel developers. You can't not know what's going on when you're coding to the bare metal. I like to think that I'm a better programmer thanks to my intimate knowledge of that bare-metal environment, even though I haven't written any assembler in years. I know how memory works on a PC, and they helps me design smaller, faster, more efficient apps than the guy who's relied on garbage collection his whole life.
If you don't think it was sexual, even a little bit, then I have SERIOUS questions on your judgment, and I wouldn't let you any where near my daughters.
Wait... the fact that I'm not aroused by naked children makes you fear me ? How fucked up you are! Sure, the album cover is cheap and exploitative, and that's what irritates me, not the image itself. The fact that they're "selling out" by using sex to sell their album is pretty damned weak, but then again we live in a weak culture where sex is used as bait.
There are places on this earth where sex is not taboo, where adults don't giggle at the thought of naked skin. Everyone (or almost) has the ability to give and receive sex, it is effectively the most abundant resource we have, so why is it artificially rarefied ? Why do people compete for something that's abundant ?
Pedophilia, in my opinion, is a side-effect of rarefying sex. We are taught that sex is "dirty" and "shameful", which creates people who crave something "pure" and "innocent", like a child that has not yet discovered the evils of the world. I don't like pedophilia, I think it's wrong, but that's primarily because it's an exploitative relationship.
Exploitation is wrong, there... that's simple! So yes, I have morals. I keep them simple.
I have another simple one that serves me well: If no harm is being done, let people be. That's how I can blame the band, the music industry, the profiteers, the censors, but not the photograph.
I did RTFA (I know, bad habit!). In case you're new to English comprehension, the "I blame porn" line was sarcasm/humor, but the rest was a genuine concern of mine.
We live in a world where all media are throwing bullshit at us, perhaps more than ever before. A little skepticism is healthy and necessary. It's unfortunate that you don't understand or agree with my views but hey, that's why we're debating on the internet.
The fact that I got modded insightful might mean that I stuck a chord with a few people. It doesn't mean I'm right or wrong, just insightful:)
The sloppy fat geek computer genius semi-buried in a pile of pizza boxes and cola cans is a mythical creature, best buried deep, never to be seen again
Um, fuck you buddy! I'm quite proud about not being a confirmist monkey. Us sloppy fat geeks are the ones who embrace new tech and make it do neat tricks, and ultimately that's what kickstarts interest in all things technical. It's the wackos that dig up all the fun stuff.
Thanks for the unusable kludge that is C++, but please go back to your Smalltalk fan club and stay there.
Yep it's the initialization that kills. Execution speed typically doesn't matter for most apps on today's hardware, but it's quite irritating to wait 3-4 seconds on a bleeding-edge machine for the stupid JVM to start up, and watch it thrash memory for a few seconds more until it's got all the cruft classes loaded.
As long as someone gets shot in the process, that's cool by me.
Canada (and by greater measure, the U.S.) doesn't need more lawyers, or more laws; what we need is more smart. All this reactionary legislation and "OMG teh children!!" babble is not helping anyone. If we don't want to degenerate into another civil war, someone had better make corrective actions before the system becomes unsustainable again.
Well yes, but the very first thing you said is that your band sucks. Do you think the government should give you money for sucking ?
Maybe you should figure out why nobody likes your music, fix that, and then get in touch with A&R people that just might give you the promotion you need to blip on SOCAN's radar.
I don't necessarily agree with the blank media levy, but I certainly don't agree with the idea of giving welfare handouts to shitty artists, and they already do too much of that.
As the only other Canadian on slashdot, I second these opinions.
SOCAN isn't anywhere near as evil as the RIAA. The CRIA on the other hand, they're a bunch of creeps serving the big distributors, and the CRTC is the industry's sock puppet. Those last two don't add much value for Canadian artists, not unless you're a platinum-selling act who can afford to buy one of their reps.
Studies in more than 20 countries have shown that they have dropped from 150 million per milliliter of sperm fluid to 60 million over 50 years
Ahem... I blame internet porn!
So what are the odds that this research was funded by some fundamentalist religious group ? No one just randomly sets out on random research, someone has to pay the bill, which usually (always) means there's something to be gained from the results. Today's world is anything but altruistic.
At some point the community at large has a right -a duty, even- to stop this kind of crass commercial exploitation
There's only one thing I hate more than the police, and that's the morality police. Who are you to say what is and isn't acceptable ? I'm unfazed by these album covers, they don't do anything for me, might as well be a "naked" chihuahua.
I don't think sexually repressed cultures should be making broad statements about sexuality. That's probably how you got into this mess in the first place!
What would they have done differently, had they "known" sooner ? Does buying a phone help corrupt cops stop terrorism ? They're not going to do a damned thing. You could have the phone dealer drag the suspects to the cop shop, throw them in a cell and the lazy maggots won't bother locking it, because they support the cause.
You've successfully demonstrated that the problem lies upstream.
If JBL's policies are hurting the customers, then they need to change those policies. If the problem relates to the distribution model, then JBL needs to beef up their distribution accordingly.
The MAP I think is a crutch. Sure, I could save a few bucks online, but at what cost ? If anything, audio guys are aware that gear breaks down (a lot), and a web site isn't going to be of any use when your amp blows up the day before your show - might as well cancel the next 2 months' bookings! A brick and mortar store has customer service (most of the time). They will fix your amp (or ship it back for you), and give you a loaner.
You know what sucks about buying online ? Shipping. The first time you send those cheap speakers out for repair, the shipping will burn whatever you had saved by buying from www.cheapspeakers.cn
Frankly, I think we can do away with MAP. If someone wants to pay a cheaper price for less service, that's their choice. They will probably end up buying another when the first one breaks, so the manufacturer might actually benefit from the crap service.
Yes, but the difference is a USB device or controller costs about 2 yen, while a Firewire endpoint costs about $20, half of that in licensing alone!
Firewire is by far a superior interlink in terms of performance, but it is overpriced (you can thank Steve Jobs for that one).
That's all fine in theory, except practically every USB chipset in use today does not take advantage of that architecture, i.e. they offload the difficult stuff to the CPU, because software is cheaper than hardware.
The whole point of being a theoretical geophysicist is that once the answer is found, you're gonna be out of a job.
Evidence is the enemy, they just have to make things semi-plausible so more funding can be secured.
LIES!
Clean and fit people are too busy having sex (with other people). They don't have any time to play with tech :P
Without open source, Apple will find itself in the same position as today's Microsoft in seven years

There may only be two of us, but we've got an army of angry beavers ready to bite your silly little heads off :)
Frankly the more time they spend bickering over who gets to sit on the big chair, the less time they spend selling our lives to foreign interests.
Harper, Dion, Rae... it's all the same bunch of lies. You just can't get to that position without shaking hands with a bunch of crooks along the way.
I did RTFA (I know, bad habit!). In case you're new to English comprehension, the "I blame porn" line was sarcasm/humor, but the rest was a genuine concern of mine.

Wake me when the egyptian population decides to stand up against their wacky leaders.
"Wahhhh! My government is corrupt and tyrannical!"
OK, do something about it!

That's fine because we'll never buy it.
If Broadcom is too stupid to realize the huge market for Linux-based network appliances, then they deserve to fail.
As long as someone gets shot in the process, that's cool by me.

If some creepy dude wants pictures of children he'll a proxy.
You accidentally the whole thing.
I hope you have deep pockets, 'cause <blink>you just won five thousand internets</blink>

Absolutely! They all suck so bad, they're actually more effective when they're all deadlocked.
I mean come on, which genius put Stephane Dion in a media-facing role ? They somehow managed to find the weakest, dumbest looking Quebecer ever bred.
I, for one, welcome our new moosen overlords.
Couldn't be much worse than this Harper guy...
