  1. Illogical conclusion on Japanese Researcher Finds Gaming Stunts Brain · · Score: 5, Insightful

What a great comparison they did... Let's compare playing a video game to "an exercise called the Kraepelin test, which involves adding single-digit numbers continuously for 30 minutes." Yeah, I'm sure that continuously adding numbers is quite a lot of fun for the researchers, but something tells me that the average kid won't think that this is a good time...

Seriously, this article practices once of the major fallacies of statistics. They do a basic study of some Nintendo video game (they don't mention which one) versus continuously adding numbers or reading aloud. Then they draw the conclusion that:

"But the other thing is to ask them to play outside with other children and interact and to communicate with others as much as possible. This is how they will develop, retain their creativity and become good people."

Excuse me?!? The study had absolutely nothing to do with playing outside with other children. There's a chance that doing just that would be even worse for the childrens' frontal lobes. We don't know because the study said nothing about other behaviors, just playing a game & doing math.

If you ask me, this is nothing but inflammatory nonsense designed to generate a lot of press time and give people a good excuse to take away our fun.

  2. Re:One possible solution on Letting The Market Choose Decent Broadband · · Score: 1

What you are faililng to realize is that this has already happened. My father works for SBC, and is dealing with this. Sometime in '99, the state governments around here insisted that the owners of the wire couldn't provide data services. Thus, SBC took the DSL providing out of Pac Bell, Nevada Bell, Southwestern Bell, and all the other Bells they own, and put it into a new company called ASI (Advanced Systems Inc I think). ASI is responsible for the ISP, while Pac Bell is responsible for the wires. This is why getting DSL straight from the TelCo doesn't speed up install times, because it still goes through 2 companies and takes forever.

The stakes are different in one midwestern state (Kansas or Nebraska), where the state gov. wouldn't let them own the ISP side of DSL. So what happened? They decided not to roll out DSL at all. Why? Because SBC is forced to sell the wires _AT COST_ and make no money at all if Covad or some other company leases the wire. As such, SBC has no way of making any money by rolling out DSL to that state.

One more thing. Currently SBC loses around $100 per DSL customer per year. They hope to make their money back once they can roll out extra services such as voice over IP, video networking, or other services. Selling just the data over DSL doesn't even come close to making enough money to justify the enormous costs of rolling out DSL.

Well, if you know the registry, just delete the AIM key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run Otherwise, run the System Information tool in Start/Accessories/System Tools. Then click Tool/System Configuration Utility. Click the startup tab and there's all the stuff that will start up. AIM's in there, ready to be unchecked.
