The English used a weapon- the longbow- that allowed them to take out the French knights before the French could get them.

Technically the French tried to charge across a muddy bog in heavy armour, they were sitting ducks once the horses got stuck, so it had less to do with longbows and more to do with a really bad tactical decision.

So, the value of BC is based only in the public perception without any production base behind.

On the plus side it does give the naysayers a practical lesson in what exactly backs a modern currency - a lot more than "the man" keeping you down.

I dunno, it could be pulled off. I'm watching with great interest the rise and rise of steampunk in fashionable circles, which is the diametric opposite of the slick apple look. Replace brass cogs with copper electronics and you might have something, especially once one of the big fashion houses weigh in. And they will, in their constant search for the new.

There's a lot of software that never makes it to the consumer desktop, being used for health systems, very niche SME support, embedded systems, tiny accounts packages tailored for each country or certain types of company, etc., it's a massive list. Just google "software company" for the country of interest. Or just look at Linux, written out of frustration in Helsinki because of the problems with commercial licensing of MINIX.
