Hmmrmm... am I the only one that noticed low end systems supporting AMD processors are expected to give up on AGP in favor of UMA architechtures?
This will be a great thing for cheap systems, if they can get the bandwidth there. Of course, it probably means we'll be stuck with the video solution that is provided with the chipset (like the blasted CRM graphics on my 5-year old UMA-architechture O2), but it still will be interseting to see how this unfolds.
I haven't looked at a processor roadmap for a while (heck, since Intel announced Celerons with cache!)... does anyone know if Intel is planning the same core architechture move? I recognize that the i740 graphics and successors were a step in this direction, but are there plans for the future?
Netscape 4.71 on IRIX (so that includes all 64-bit MIPS processors and the 32-bit ones who think they're 64... anything from R4K on up) runs exactly like it does on a PC with Win or Linux. I can run flash, realaudio, and most other major plugin content.
Yes, that also means that Netscape is bloated and crashes arbitrarily every 30 minutes or so, but you gotta take the lumps with the bad.:)
If only MSIE were ported to every platform... sigh.
Didn't anyone teach these guys in elementary school that water is blue and land is !blue? I spent ten minutes studing this map trying to parse out recognizable shapes before I realized that blue was land. I thought it was an extreme close up of Indonesia, and I kept wondering, "Why is Perth on the East coast of this landmass??"
REDMOND, WA (AP) - Nintendo of America has just announced a new cutting-edge programming language: PikaLogo.
"We feel we've revived a classic programming language by combining it with a recognizable character in contemporary America," stated company spokesperson Howard Lincoln. "Pikachu is one of the best-selling and most-recognized faces in electronic gaming today and by bringing the two together, we feel that children will be able to learn to program in a comfortable environment."
PikaLogo, the first product in Nintendo's ProgramMon line, allows children to learn the elementary LOGO procedural language with the classic turtle replaced by the cartoon character Pikachu. Children enter a list of instructions for the character along with simple procedural control statements ("if A then do B" or "until C happens, do D").
Shigeru Mayimoto was not available for comment. His secretary mentioned two other products, PascalAran (A Metroid/Pascal combination) and SuperCOBOLBrothers.
PikaLogo will be released by Thanksgiving with an estimated retail price of $49.95. It has been rated E for Everyone. ...More Powerful than Otto Preminger...
The folks around my office seem content using Office97. Office 2000 doesn't get them any improvements they need over 97, so what is MS going to add to incentivize us to go through the hassle of upgrading and the hassle of dealing with subscription services?
Not much.
So what if it's designed for the "Internet integrated office"? Most non-Fortune 500 offices are just learning how to use a networked print server or a networked fax server. What's the advantage of having Internet embedded abilities in their documents if they're still using a photocopier as a photocopier?
I work at a regional ISP. If my boss agrees with the feds to investigate me or someone else, I'd like to know what one looks like when it shows up in the server room.:)
Is the FBI a Dell customer? Or do they use Gateways? Or just build their own?
The change it had to come. We knew it all along. We were liberated from the fold, that's all. And the world looks just the same, and history ain't changed. Cause the banners were all flown in the last war.
I don't see why you guys imply that this might help 3Dfx "regain" their crown. Their time is over, get used to it. Brand loyalty is silly in today's changing computer market.
Sure, Compaq was a great price/performance leader when they were toppling IBM, but who besides classrooms and grandmothers wants a Presario nowadays? "Not I," said the cat. And, even though we all purchased Creative Labs 2x CD-ROM multimedia kits, who's going to buy one today? We can piece together a better "multimedia" selection from other places.
3Dfx had their day in the sun. Right now, nVidia and ATI are enjoying their stranglehold on the gaming graphics industry. SOMEONE will come along with a better product -- it doesn't matter if it's nVidia or 3Dfx or Matrox or even Hercul.. I mean Paradi... I mean... uh... Intel.
(Summary: those who cannot remember the past...do more research in buying new products.)
I've seen (and admittedly) participated in a couple threads here about pirating the Dune miniseries. I beg everyone NOT to do this.
It's stated on Sci-Fi's website that if there's enough interest, we stand a chance of seeing books 2-6 come to the small screen. I would LOVE to see this happen, and don't want to see anything out there that might jeapordize the rest of the serieses (serii?).
I'm a big fan of Lynch's film, mostly because I'm a Lynch fan and partly because I can tell myself that it was just "inspired" by Herbert, and not an adaptation thereof. If the SciFi channel's miniseries is as good as it looks, many Herbert fans (myself included) will be VERY happy, and VERY hungry for more.
South Park made Comedy Central... It's hard to argue this. Once SP started, they received some pitiful number of nielsen points -- but it was a LOT for cable networks. It gave them the room to charge more for advertising and fund other creative ventures. That's what SciFi is gambling on with Dune, I'd imagine.
I don't have cable, and Sci Fi isn't in the basic lineup where I am. So I've called TCI this week to get it installed. If/when SciFi offers this on video/dvd, I'll purchase it. Things like this are what they need. It may cost a bit for the effort, but think if it as an investment in the future -- for all of us geeks.:)
Can I borrow your TiVo for a few days after it's over so I can copy it via firewire and store it on a few DVD-RAMs? I don't have the drive yet, but I'm sure as hell getting one.:):)
(Maybe because of the increased interest in Dune, they'll re-print the paperbacks from new film that doesn't have squished lines of text randomly through the book. Yeah right.)
That's funny. I'm a geek. I listen to the radio. Quite extensively, in fact. Any time I'm in the car, I have the radio on. It sounds better than MP3 and it's less expensive than CD. Oh, and you get a little bit more variety than any changer will give you. As much as I love listening to Dark Side of the Moon every day, it's nice to hear stuff from other artists once in a while -- it keeps things interesting, lets you try out new stuff, and reminds you of stuff you haven't listened to in ages (since you forgot to add it to your collection the last time through).
Plus, I don't want to spend a couple hundred on fancy speakers for my computer -- it's a computer, not a stereo. And, since I *am* a geek, I've spent my money on my computer... not home entertainment equipment. So music is in the car and on the radio, the way it was meant to be.
And now I'll be able to find out who the heck is playing that long lyric-less Steve Vai/Eddie Van Halen-esque piece that's weaseled its way onto the play list!

They do this all the time. It's not news. I've been at medium-sized companies that have been audited and large universities. They do it quite frequently. The fact that it's a largish government organization doesn't make it any different.
You're forgetting a major point. Dungeons and Dragons has Richard O'Brien. With RoB, you can "time warp" to 2001 (and then do it again... and again...). So you probably want to see D&D after all.

"But it's the 5D100 that really drives you insa-a-a-a-ane."
If I had more time to work on this, the first thing I'd do would be to take the guts of a Gameboy Color and use them to replace the furby's internal systems. You get an ehnanced Z-80 processor (which we ALL learned how to program in our first year or two of college, right?), audio output, 8 control inputs (plus the analog? volume control) (connect these to the front/back button, upside-down detector and the "noise" sensor) and a boatload of interface options for your control system (i.e. the gameboy proto-firewire connector).
It would be loads of fun... especially making a Furby that shouts "Pikaaachuuuu!" but I just don't have the time.:)
While Darth Vader is over 35 years old, he has the problem with being born in the United States. And I certainly don't think he's currently a naturalized citizen -- which means he can't even vote!

Ecstasy is dangerous shit.
Besides the immediate side effects (dehydration, high blood pressure, etc), E has a lot of long-term effects that have not been studied in any depth. Some serotonin receptors in your brain are damaged every time you use it -- they're overloaded by the sudden release of serotonin and just give up. Yeah, everyone knows about "terrible tuesdays" and the recovery time after you come down from E, but sometimes it can take weeks for your brain to re-manufacture more serotonin.
Do some reading: http://come.to/ecstasy. I urge you. My best friend died this summer during his third experience with ecstasy. He was a computer geek studying biomedical engineering... slashdot material. The people that are hurt by this stuff aren't people you don't know in clubs far away -- they're you and me and our friends.
I'm sure there's someone out there who can answer your question, assuming he can find it. You just need to find something to put in your subject so that he knows its there......
Remember when the iMacs came out and all the/. users complained about how people should chose computers based on their use -- looks were only secondary? Notice how the industry has changed so that even the hardware-loving geeks have put appearance really high on the list of "important things" for electronic equipment. Yeah, sleek stereos have always been the rage, but every thread I've read so far related to this story isn't "What kind of processor will it have?" or "Do you think it'll come with dvd and a twelve hour battery life?" but more like "these things look like Dark Jedi iBooks!" or "It reminds me of something Get Smart would use! They're horrid!"
