Not really, Gnutella doesn't even have a fraction of the traffic Napster has, and it's non-functional with a dial up modem. I'll have to admit it is amusing to watch all the requests fly by with Gnutella, I think I saw just about every variation of "Nude Britany Spears" that you can think of.

What about if you make the user click on an agreement that states they do not intend to use napster for any copywritten material and they agree to be responsible for anything they share. Or make them click on an agreement that they are not affiliated with the recording industry and have no intentions of prosecuting them. Sort of like if your a hooker and you ask the john if he's a cop, he has to tell you... or something like that..so I've heard anyways... After all, I still have a hard time believeing that Napser is responsible for the total disreagrd of IP that the general public seems to have.

I mean, who really cares... they aren't breaking any laws, it's just the way the world works. Uh.... is it just me or has everyone here been tricked by the almighty Microsoft marketing machine? Lets all remember that Win 2K is actually nothing more than NT5. In fact a lot of the third party programs I run will report that when you query them for OS stats. Sure they took NT 4 and did a lot of work but the core of the OS is still NT. Repeat after me, Win2k is the upgraded version of NT4.

Based upon how Win2k performs on my box I'm not surprised by these results though. It is considerably slower than NT 4 was on a slower machine I was using before the upgrade. Considerablly slower. However it doesn't need to be rebooted after lunch everyday to reclaim all the leaking memory like NT4 did. That's a plus. Lets be realistic here, Microsoft has never been known for caring too much about optimizing for speed, they always go for features features features, meaning bloat in some cases but always meaning you will need a lot more machine to run it properly than the previous version. I guess it has worked well for them in the past although people seem to be getting wise lately.

I know that many of these responese are simply trolls, but it really amazes me that the marketing principle of changing a name really works, even on people who are fairly techinical. I guess they really do know what they are doing.

Surely the RIAA knows this, they also know that they cannot go after every pencil necked geek who is stealing from them, thus they attempt to bully Napster. In fact it's not even close. As strange as it is to say this I really feel that MS has raised the standard for web browsers with ie. It's fast and it crashed on rare occasion (maybe once a week for me) while Netscape/Mozilla will go down once every couple hours under heavy browsing.

I'm a big open source fan and I have my own open source project so I am biased in a major way towards free software, but I have to doubt the sanity of anybody who can claim that the netscape/mozilla browser is better then ie. Just because we want it to win doesn't mean that it will. Just because we hate to see the giant monopolistic company produce a superior product doesn't stop them from doing so. IMHO the absolute worst thing the OSS community can do is bury it's angry head in the sand and pretend that no matter what we do it's better because we stand for the right cause.
