Funny. On server 2012 R2 I can reverse AD schema deletions, go powershell only and or turn GUI on or off, use desired state configuration powershell templates, use DCs as VMs, and many many almost countless things I can't do on server 2k3.
Is it really true you need a 1990s modem plugged into a 2k3 server just to turn VPN on and then unplug the modem before it is ready??
If you're a dev, you shouldn't be chasing versions. Find a stable version, stick with it through your project. SE already has enough of that "stuff changing out from under me" feel without adding to the issue.
This mindset is why I still have to support companies that refuse to migrate from IE8. Thanks.
There are currently 2 common mindsets.
1) find a stable version and prevent yourself from ever getting anything better and any upgrade is sure to break tons of stuff
or
2) upgrade versions every time a new one comes out so you get the benefits of incremental improvements, sure stuff breaks, but the next patch will fix it in a matter of days/weeks
On April 8th 2014 the joyful day of XP/IE6 death, which should be considered an international holiday, I think a lot of companies realized that the days of use a "Stable version" for decades is over/no longer realistic.
Now I am not saying "just start upgrading everything always" because the worst thing you can do is try to step out in front of the subway car of continuous integration/continuous improvement after letting a project mature on "stick with the stable version" mentality; but I am saying... the half-assed "stable version" meets patch tuesday bullshit that microsoft is doing will continue to bite you and everybody else in the ass until that entire tech stack stops doing that crap and starts doing the continuous integration thing for real. Chrome does it, every app on your phone tries to do it, "cloud" products do it (that is one of the reasons execs love "cloud").
Microsoft might as well be mailing floppies for how broken and relevant their process is.
Speak for yourself! I can't consider learning HTML 5 until 2020 when 7 goes EOL as too many of the users have standardized on IE 8 HTML throughout the whole decade. I have 2 apps we support which are IE 6 only and can't be upgraded and not our call to upgrade it( client owned)
Is this serious enough where I need to re-image as things like my Intel RST raid driver all depend on 4.5 runtimes or does this only hit code being compiled?

Why should someone pay uo to $160 to make their computer run as advertised? A system today is only worth $450 new and $160 premium for a non AD joined computer is STUPID.
We use phones and they do not have these problems. No wonder people are switching to tablets. They just work. Sorry MS needs to rehire their QA they laid off (that is right no QA team just usage scenarios from the agile developers with stories)and need to make their product work as advertised. I thought a WHQL certified driver needed testing?
THe drivers need more testing before being put out on the open.

So part of an open standard is owned by a monopoly and the great internet which was owned by the people is now licensed under Hollywood. Incredible!

For a long time I didn't mind having ads enabled on Slashdot as they tended to behave well, but recently they've been beyond annoying. They make noise and eat inordinate amounts of CPU time for no purpose. When will advertisers realize it's better to make a simple ad that's respectful to the audience than to make one that no one will ever care to look at? I don't doubt that they can get by fine in general when advertising to the unwashed masses, but this is a tech site and the users are no strangers to ad-blocking plug-ins or other means of never viewing their content.
Which is why I use adblock plus. Slashdot gets paid still by ethical ads with guidelines that must be met and will lose money when these clowns get blocked. I still get 3 ad networks blocked as of right now with adblock. If Slashdot wants more money replace them with ethical ads and VIOLA.
So to me this is the perfect solution so we can have some free stuff and profitability goes down for the unethical ones
They have improved. Power management, efi, and people tend to now buy more laptops and now tablets. People run apps on their phones.
Windows 10 is a hybrid which takes advantage of fast uefi booting, can run apps and applications, touch friendly, and more power efficient.
The 10 sdk has tools and support for dalvik and objective-c and can use 80% of the code for your android and is apps.
You may not be changing but I am seeing more and more surfaces and workplaces shifting to ultrabooks. So MS has decided it needed to change if it didn't want to follow the lead of IBM when focusing on legacy like mainframes
It was taken off as that looks very dated. Clean, low color, minimal is all the rage and more modern looking. OSX too toned these down with a flatter look with Yosemite. Android lollipop and M too are going low color aND flat with a modern look.
I was at McDonald's the other day and they too had a flat borderless Burger icon printed on the bag.
CCNA is a b*tch to pass. But the truth is employers want both certifications. MCSA/MCSE and CCNA together as you will need to know what a subnet is and how to do both.

As unpopular as my post is going to get on such an anti MS and pro Linux site I have to say MS really did do a good job after the security Memo from 2004 starting with Vista in terms of security. I would rank it as one of the most secure operating systems behind OpenBSD and MVS as number 3.
Modern Windows has all the apis go through ACL to prevent bypasses that explains UAC prompts in Vista. It also now randomizes data in the ram to prevent injections via ASLR. It has a signed bootloader to prevent rootkits. It can now accurately separate storage vs execution data to prevent buffer overflows. It has kernel level sandboxing with low-rights mode which Chrome and IE use for default which severely limit FS and services access. Windows Server can be powershell only which can limit 90% of the exploits with GDI and excess services that no longer need to be patched and so on.
All the exploits you read are from Adobe and Java which due to XP compatibility can't use modern features such as low-rights mode due to people not wanting to change.
I am not saying it is an amazing OS but it is not WIndows 98 anymore where pointers and crashes were all over and all you had to do was put your code in a ram address where a known pointer would look and BAM 0wned!

Until your client is furious and wants to fire you because his grandma using IE 8 on XP can't view your videos on her internets.
Or the marketing department sends you the video file made in Adobe products which are h.265 for the website whose tools can't export to vp9.

ASLR was one of the arguments of using Windows while for some reason it is still bashed as insecure here. Chuckles
