Just because someone is infected doesn't mean they are idiots who click on attachments.
Heaven forbid too if you think your safe with no AV protection either as this shows your not. AV is not perfect but can certainly stop a payload in 90% of cases for non 0 day exploits
I hated the sterile look of 8.1 and I find 10 does bring darker colors in. It is not finished yet. You can have minimalism and still have color. The art professors who are pioneering this new way mention more emphasis on video and color. Not all blinding white like office 2013.
Rounded corners are gone. You can thank Apple for owning a patent on it for that as it is expensive to license the idea of using a shape. gradients and shine like the WIndows 7 bar? That looks to be gone. It may not be too bad.
MacOSX Yosemite does this new look rather well with a little translucency left where it does not look like glass and still has plenty of color.
As a desktop I can see your point. I do like Skydrive as a backup tool and access to share data between my computers and my phone.
These things you hate I kind of would like in a mobile platform on the road for weather as an example or asking it for directions for someplace. I love Google cards on my phone. It tells when I get up how long my commute to work is. It knows I am traveling and always giving an ETA to the airport. It even checks slashdot so I can browse the news.
On a netbook this would be cool. Maybe not so much on a desktop. Do I think Cortana is going to spy on me when I do not use it? Not really. Not anymore than my phone could in my pocket with Google Now.
This is what I dreamed computers would do when I watched Star Trek the next generation as a kid. If I can minimize the apps I would not mind youtube or last.fm playing music while I work. But different strokes for different folks right?
But why so strong resistance to change on a technology site of all places? Does anyone else find this weird? Never in my wildest dreams would I picture slashdot turn into +5 comments with "CHANGE FOR THE SAKE OF CHANGE etc" I ask because I am curious and wonder if I am alone? You would not expect to see comments in a fashion oriented blog like "NEW LOOK FOR THE SAKE OF NEW LOOKS" be posted as an example.
It kind of saddens me a little bit as we computer geeks came here because we love technology and like to have new new things. Now that is uncool and I have seen it become more prevalent in other articles. Is it age or just scarred from experience?
What happened?
Anyway my unbiased 2 cents...
I think this would be a good upgrade for a notebook or tablet. Much improved battery life and the ability to run Netflix and Hulu on the road is really cool. As long as the applets are not like Windows 8 and I can do work too I am fine if they can integrate.
For the desktop? I see little reason to upgrade. Windows 7 works fine. However for those reading my previous paragraphs I do not hate 10. I just think it offers little value besides enhanced security over 7. I probably will upgrade next fall after it stabilizes since the upgrade is free. Now if I bought a new computer with it on it I would not downgrade it. Can't say the same with Windows 8.1 though:-)
On my i7 4770k I have to say I find it faster and more responsive than 7. It was surprisingly stable with just 1 bug with nvidia if I do the dual screen 4k hack to stretch it. A MUST if you already ahve 8.
It is nice modest upgrade for desktop users and a BIG upgrade for mobile users.
If it is not cost effective and upgrading offers no ROI why should a business change?
They are there to make money by cutting costs and raising revenue. Not to show off chics at Starbucks how cool your browser is with neato effects.
Sorry but HTML 5 is not ready at this time. Also school kids will be screwed as tax payers refuse to upgrade these systems and teachers systems are coded for older versions of IE. No way in hell will you convince the tax payers to upgrade something that already works. Therefore the kids can't research music now.
Gee a little insecure are we? News flash software is software and has bugs. It doesn't matter which license it is under. It still is software and no being from Microsoft doesn't make it insecure by default anymore than being GNU makes it more secure.
Yes Apple, Google, and Microsoft are mentioned here when a serious flaw is discovered. Why should Linux or anything GNU get a free pass?
I do not know if I can adjust hairy. I love Aero and the familiarity of Windows 7. I know XP users hate 7 because they too like the feel and know where everything is at for the last decade so why change?
What I worry about is can I still do instantsearch or will Cortana pop up and Bing power options instead of just opening power options to set my sleep mode? I hated this with 8 with a passion.
I need my aero too. Windows 7 is exactly what I tried to do with Vista via hacks like VistaGlaze with all the colors. I want customization. After 8.1 I am afraid of change.
I am downloading 10 as an upgrade on the 7 box I am using now but I have a feeling by tomorrow night I will be putting 7 back on. 8.1 had a tendency to crash on youtube regardless if the video card was an ATI or Nvidia.
Agreed. Thanks to virtualization I can still run Linux or FreeBSD as a VM.
I tend to use turnkey Linux these days as these are appliances I just turn on and I have a modified HOST file with the IP addresses of my VMs from VMware Workstation.
Windows as a host is stable, has office, Visual Studio, adobe photoshop, and of course my video games and cloud storage tools.
I know people who went back to school at 45 and found jobs as software developers before even graduating! Do not tell me this as the 2002 recession ended.
Wow buy a new one if the old one works just fine and is better (no cell phone on the desktop)?
True as a gamer an old system is pretty useless unless you run older games from that era in which it came from.
XP is still insanely popular and I will bet you money in 2020 when Windows 7 goes EOL XP will still have marketshare of active computer users. Small but still significant to be counted. It works and users like it because it is familiar to them.
I still see no reason to leave Windows 7. I just wonder what it will break now? Windows 8.1 BSOD on both an ATI and NVidia cards in youtube which I find very strange. No problem at all in Windows 7. DirectX 12 adds more complexity of things it can fuck up.
Oh and my Asus board probably won't have drivers as it is in their financial interests for me to throw it all away and buy another one right? I had a room mate who stayed on XP for a long long time as he thought Windows 7 was a buggy POS. It always BSOD because Dell wanted him to throw it away and buy a new one rather than release a driver that went thru QA?
I find that very hard to believe as driver support for XP has gone away since 2011 except for a few business oriented systems and now even they do not have Xp drivers.
Wii has open hardware access to the primitives where developers writell their own direct access according to a past story here. PS is the same. Console makers hate opengl as it encourages portability to other consoles
John Carmack conceded directx 9 is superior. I can't think of a single game today that uses opengl. Why is that?
You must live in alternative universe as developers prefer to develop for consoles first with direct x then back port it to pc if piracy concerns are not to bad.
In 2015 we choose languages on rich sets of apis. Java for example is almost universally hated for it's syntax yet is insanely popular. Why? 150,000 methods to choose from and frameworks galore.
No one cares about features as its not 1982 anymore where you write your own libraries. Today you have a task and a tight deadline and there is no time to program. Only time to grab a framework can tinker with it.
Just because someone is infected doesn't mean they are idiots who click on attachments.

It can do the gui and port forwarding for you.
Just comes with a shirt startup daemon
We will see.

I kind of look at an OS as a whole environment.
As a desktop I can see your point. I do like Skydrive as a backup tool and access to share data between my computers and my phone.

Yes this is a Linux oriented site yada yada.

Yes there will be aero in future builds as evident in that screenshot.
Not too much of a biggie as long as the colors are not too bright or pastelish. It seems that is toned down in 10.
If it is not cost effective and upgrading offers no ROI why should a business change?

Shame
The real question.
First how do you get it up there? Stairs perhaps?
Going to pay to upgrade our apps and pay a few hundred thousand for consultants to test our websites? How nice
This blows as we need IE 8 at work and use YouTube for uploading videos.
Until 2020 the world is not ready as IE 8 is the defacto standard in China and corporate America??
C is like a powerful table saw. Don't practice safety and know what you are doing and you lose a limb. Powerful but not all should play with one.
Because C is cool and Java and flash suck. Get with the program
"You people"?

Netscape was worse than IE 6 due to even more bugs and CSS work arounds if you can believe that.
Firefox == netscape rendering engine whether it is cleaned up or not.
Therefore IE 11 is better than Firefox
You sir are in luck as Aero is returning
I know people who went back to school at 45 and found jobs as software developers before even graduating! Do not tell me this as the 2002 recession ended.

Just my gripe.

This must have been used.
Wii has open hardware access to the primitives where developers writell their own direct access according to a past story here. PS is the same. Console makers hate opengl as it encourages portability to other consoles
They use neither. Directx is on the Xbox so the pc gets a lousy Xbox port. Opengl has not been used in games for a long time now.
Exception is Wow for the mac
Wow right back in 2001 again.
John Carmack conceded directx 9 is superior. I can't think of a single game today that uses opengl. Why is that?

Chrome uses Webkit specific css and not W3C. It claims it supports more standards but like IE 6 it is not standardized.
It is like IE 4 in many ways as websites need to use Webkit specific hacks.
