Doesn't help if server 2003 sole purpose is to run IE 6.
MS forced it off the desktops with EOL for XP through what some would say extortion.
Server 2003 has IE 6 and with citrix can run due to quirks mode hacks to get it to display at all. So now what? Upgrading is not acceptable. You positively absolutely can never upgrade apps that are the business process which store data in a proprietary format
I don't know Hairy. This seems very risky especially for enterprise users who hate change.
Reason is the rapid annual updates. 10 will have a Debian style slow and fast rings where the slowest enterprise get updated every 2 years?? Shoot how many of these users still come into your shop with XP and even Windows 98? I am sure a lot as all change is for the sake of change for these business users. XP has spoiled them rotten with 13 years of continuous support.
Upgrading this often without sccm support and testing the apps and having the vendor certify the app as supported will be a freaking nightmare.
10 needs.1 upgrades, sccm upgradable, and no major changes and 5 years of support for each.1 release. Just easier to put your fingers in your ears and hum Windows 7 for the businesses
If you expend less energy it needs to match down consumption too. Americans are so fat because they are used to eating more. You would never see a restaurant like Bucca Di Peppo in Europe. As an American just saying.
A sandwich is or small salad with no sugary soda is what people who are skinny and in Europe eat for lunch. No fries supersized, coffee with sugar, or a Coke on a daily basis.
Right so running full applications like Java and Flash as an administrator w ith no freaking security checks at all like we did with Netscape and IE 6 is soo much superior??! Yikes.
Or try running gmail.com or maps.google.com with no logic at all in static HTML?
But Vista and corporate accountants and aging of the average slashdotter has shifted opinion. For me it is too far now in the other direction of 15 year changes and XP is GOD and if it costs my company money they oppose it and refuse to look at it is where we are today.
The days of people like us waiting at CompUSA at 12am for Windows 95 and always upgrading to the next kernel and manually compiling gnome (if this is possible today due to complexity) are done.
But saying the web was fine in 2004 with IE 6 and XP is still the best is ludacrius from Slashdot.org of all places. There are hidden costs and yes web developers HATE XP. Most people do not know what an internet browser even is. So they will use IE 8 and this is what most slashdotters do not understand.
MS is giving Windows 10 for free folks for home users. They plan to capitalize on the app store. I like my Roku with all my apps for movies and TV all thanks to HTML 5. Why is this a bad thing? There is a reason corporations love intranet apps even though those tied to ancient versions of IE did hurt the faith a little. Why? You can run them ANYWHERE. No deployment. Go to www.myshittycrm.com. No SCCM. No deployment. No testing with Windows 10. Just go to a browser and click on the bookmark. DONE.
MS wants to be part of these ecosystems and HTML 5 offers it.
Why? You upgrade your phone each release? Chrome too. Is your cell phone 10 years old?
Windows 10 has a fast and slow rings. Slow is pro and upgraded every other year. Enterprise is 3 years. Running 10 year old operating systems is rediculous and puts an undue burden on Web and software developers. Internet users suffer as a result. See IE 6?
Windows 10 is designed to be upgraded via sccm and each release will be a.1 so shit won't break if rumor is true. No hell like XP to 7 migrations at all.
IE 11 you hit up or down arrow keys. Smooth as butter like a phone. Firefox mostly as smooth as its XP hooks limits hardware acceleration.
CHROME? Blip blip blip tear in image when you hit up and down. Slashdoters on Windows reading this try it? Surprised?
First Chrome had it. Then you had to go into about::flags. Now it is not even available? WTF. IE 8 in 2009 had this and Firefox in 2011. I can't even use it anymore as it feels like I am on an old computer. I hope someone from Google is reading this.
Last blink is not standard compliant. Font face, animations, and other things are not done like W3C. I have to write one site for W3C compliant browsers and one conditions for blinks way of doing things. It reminds me of IE of old

Why Run Linux On Macs?

You just made a great case not to use Linux on the desktop if you use Krita and need Office 360.:-)
Web developers need to test ancient and new versions of IE as well so a VM is required anyway to test these browsers. I love virtualization on the workstation end as well. Just setup a container and go and you can have the pretty fonts XORG can not have thanks to patents and no issues with updates breaking things.
Windows 7 is a good solid OS with true color support that matches Apple if you have a decent monitor. Not sexy but just boring solid.
I use vmware and virtual box is free for my turnkey Linux appliances for backend stuff like php. Best of both worlds. Check out www.turnkey linux.Com if you want something that turns on and just works?
If I did own Mac I would still use vmware workstation which is much much cheaper on a mac for Linux stuff so I can keep Dreamweaver and office on my host.

Why Run Linux On Macs?

It is 2015. We solved this problem quite a few years back via virtualization.
No way I could function without vmware workstation. I run office, visual studio, adobe tools on host and run Unix back end for database and php tools.
Linux is terrible for desktop work. Gimp doesn't color calibration and is no photo shop. Docs written in Libre office look funny and unprofessional when opened in office. If your developers write Web code they need Adobe Dreamweaver etc
Seriously you can thank Apple for systemD. They first abandoned init for a systemD like startup called upstart. Sun copied then Ubuntu and now the rest is history.
So bashing Linux and switching to macosx because Linux is emulating Apple is hilarious
Apple was the ones who started to ruin the pinnacle of great software design with it's upstart which Sun, Ubuntu, and now red hat are cloning with systemD
I just read his statement and to me I got flash sites are crap on his phones and 3rd party deciding is bad.
HTML 5 would not be here without Steve Jobs (no I am not a mac fan). It got off the ground as you could use HTML 5 and CSS 3 for gradients and other effects and video. Flash did not have a mobile mode and scaled and performed poorly.
It forced web developers to learn HTML 5 for mobile sites and of course with its popularity for -webkit helped Android too with mobile site apps which are now trying to jerk HMTL 4 off (thanks to IE 8) to the grave.
Remember.WMV was taken over the web? Flash freed us by not having IE 6 and MS define multimedia. You go to youtube and through flash it worked on Linux, Mac, and PC.
I remember ask slashdot had questions on.WMV proprietary media tools for the mac as he didn't want to loose visitors and no one used quicktime anymroe and IE 6 had 90% marketshare anyway etc.
Today yeah it is obsolete but it defined video streaming last decade. It worked regardless of browser and did things through actionscript with beautiful graphics that javascript libraries were a full 5 years behind in comparison.
The good news is mobile now is ahead of the PC with mobile sites with graphics and smoothness. This is because Apple invented much of the HTML 5 specs and pushed it with the iphone. I may not like Steve but now it is forcing website makers to make 2 sites. If China can use SSL rather than Active X plugins written for IE 6 it will finally drop below the radar for PHB to tell webmasters to target. Your site may not be in Mandarin but he looks at statistics where China is counted 8 - 1 for each user over due to the population making him think 25% lost revenue if you target HTML 5 and not use flash to make up for old IE users.
Because grandmas with IE 7 complain that the internets do not work on your wizbang HTML 5 site. Or your boss threatens to fire you if you do not cater to 98% of all customers.
This means IE 8 hacks and flash to make up for hte fact it is from last decade. If you don't another webmaster in India needing money happily will and the grandmas will keep on using IE 7 like there is no tomorrow since everythign keeps looking fine for her.
This continues until we see a whole freaking decade with no web innovation. Thanks IE 6.
Funny I moved them to server 2003 with Citrix for access. Problem solved ... until now.
I am leaning towards keeping the VMs off the Web so users can use them forever.
Really you or your boss should be fired for running XP. If you do credit card processing you are breaking the law too.
Yeah with SystemD. Gee where do we sign up?

Read the XP is GOD comments when stories covering eol? Mention win 7 you get moded down and the +40 year old commentors on 7 looks funny got modes up.
Yes slashdot demographic is aging
Ever have to write websites or support old java/intranet apps with +100 security exploits with the sandbox TURNED OFF?
Your opinion will change. It is a risk and hidden cost from the bone headed accountants who love stuff and fear change.
Times change
Right. I am sure IE 6 running Google Maps and Dropbox and pocket IE 6 for CE for mobile sites soo much better than on Chrome and your Android.
Go back to a non touch screen phone from 10 years ago if it's all change for the sake of change?
Seriously slashdot has become the techno phobe all change is bad from a former leading innovative site.
