A good manager will terminate him and replace him with someone who wants to work.
Not to sound like an ass, but I was one temporary covering for a friend who owned a computer shop. Time = money and so many out of work it makes me angry at the injustice when grads work at walmart and the rest watch youtube videos?! I made them work or sent them home.
If he is being paid by the hour I would be pissed if it were my bill! Would you pay a plumber by the hour and find him browsing websites on your computer? You would fire him.
Even salary if he finishes in time he needs to invent more work for hte 40 hour work week because it is the right thing to do. I wish people would have better work ethics like they did in the old days.
You think the avarge worker at McDonalds has the luxury to goof off? No! He gets paid much less so it seems only fair that I expect more as a result every hour on the clock. Multitask and work like a mofo and I wont fire you.
You are thief. If I pay you an hourly wage and you goof off I might as well flush that cash down the toilet. Grow up and get to work! With a high unemployment rate it you should be happy you have a job and your boss can easily replace you with someone else with better ethics.
I had a link from one of my favorite speakers Larry Winget who wrote "Shut up! Stop whinning and go get a life!". The link is dead but he talks about this. You are being paid to service the customer. You can goof off on your own time but not theirs or mine if I am your manager.
Before I get modded down I have to ask does any other boss think different? Work is work man. I think working at McDonalds afterwards will scare you into an attitude adjustment on how bad life can be. This happened to me after I fucked up and went on slashdot and was shown the door. These days I know better.
The best way to stay on task is to focus on what is the most important and keep yourself super busy. There is always somethign you can do and you need to work past mental exhaustion as that is what you are paid to do. Do this every day and you will get promoted. It is pretty simple and what workers in India and China do. Companies hire them not because they are cheap but because they are committed and work very hard to make sure all goals are achieved and not quit at 5:01.
It hasn't really been solved as programmers do not use the DPI available.
Try running Firefox or Chrome on such a device or monitor. It doesn't work pretty. Chrome though I heard works well on the new Macbook Pros with it through some custom patches. Windows sucks in this area as the manifest has to support in a chicken and the egg problem. IWthout such monitors why bother to support without support why bother making a screen more than 1080P?
The new visual studio is trying to correct but developers still need to support XP so that is mute. Sigh. Xp needs to die already SERIOUSLY>
My phone shouldn't have the best hardware acceleraiton smooth scroll, and pretty pictures than a damn computer. I mean come on it has been years now my 2 year old droid phone is better.
The cost is $19 a year per user. That is very reasonable and they get Office 365 where they can use ancient versions of IE and keep in contact on the road with their IPADs.
Lync is coming with Skype integration too for Office 365 for the next Office 2014 next year if rumors are true. The cost is not really a problem but I can see over 10 years that is more than $160.
I am trying out Office 2013 now but plan to pay for a 3 license of Office 2010 for $179 at the end of the month just because over 10 years I save cash. For companies that is a small price to pay for the productivity and they only focus on the quarter and short term results anyway.
" It is frustrating to see so many of them still on IE 7, XP, and Office 2003, which hurts Windows and Office sales and holds back Microsoft profits."
See if that makes more sense...
Cheers, Dave
What about webmasters who want to use HTML 5? What about me as a user sititng around waiting? They harm everyone else. It forces software companies to release software that only works in XP still to this day as in sold currently in 2013! I think it hurts everyone as we are connected.
> 3. Integration with SQL and business intelligence reports in Excel
You just lost the "average user" at that point.
Although you probably lost them already at #1 or or #2.
#4 is just a lie. #9 is esoteric even for companies. #10 is just a big security nuissance.
The average user is not one who will pay for a business license anyway for the professional edition so that is mute since that was the original question. The subscription model is mostly for corporate clients though MS is trying to sell this to home users but I do not think office 365 is really that beneficial for Mom to check her cleaning to do list on her IPAD on vacation compared to the executive on a business trip in an airport needs to check in.
The cost is well worth it to the corporate market and normal users do use Outlook to manage todos, share calandar appointments, etc. #4 I stand by it. My resume looks different in Libreoffice compared to MS Office. I have been turned down from a job because of it when I came into the interview and the big boss handed my resume looking like crap to 3 other people who looked at me like a retard. That was embarrasing.
I had to redo it from scratch but I didn't want to take the risk? So to me a purchase of Office for home was worth it for that reason as it dealt with income. Not everyone will accept PDFs. Especially recruiters who use search indexing software for keywords that only work in.docx formats. In the business world if something does not look spectacular and professional you loose to a competitor. It is not worth the risk to deviate.
Group policy esoteric?! What world do you live in? Can you install LibreOffice to 3,000 computers in 14 countries remotely? How do you set up where you can have a different language per country? Macros are a fact of life in business. Much software is used like bar code scanning which are excel add-ons.
I don't think that's true. Microsoft office offers a rather good feature set at a lowish cost. There are better solutions for much more money. There are slightly worse solutions for an individual that lack the integration features for $0. They might just be at the right compromise point.
Okay, Mr. Paid To Post This, please provide a list of features that (a) the average user is aware of and has used in the last 18 months and (b) is not available in any of the free Office clones out there.
I'm willing to bet I can count on one hand what you come up with, and it won't be worth the $635 per seat cost that most businesses pay.
1. Integration with cloud services (If they do not use the ancient verison of 2003) 2. Ribbon access (users now prefer this as it is what they are familiar with and you can find everything) 3. Integration with SQL and business intelligence reports in Excel 4. Formatting works across tthe business world unless of course they use 2003 which occasionally exhibit formatting issues 5. PDF editing that actually works 6. Calandar functions 7. Built in Todo list 8. Lync IM integration with the phone system 9. Group policy support 10. Macro support 11. Extra finance and statistics functions in Excel 12. Worldclass database with a consumer gui front end - You can switch to SQL Server and even postgres with ODBC if you outgrow the initial default database
I know Jbolden and he is no shill and is non biased. All of these features are well worth the money for a business per seat to pay. LibreOffice still has quite a bit of work cut out for it to come even close. While postgresql and mysql beat Access the gui component where a novice can quickly create something and move it to a real datbase quickly is nice. All larger companies use all 12 things to keep things running smoothly.
There is nothing wrong with Office 2003. It's a utility. There are few features in the newer versions that make doing your job faster, more accurate, or cheaper.
Not where I am contracting as it is a big headache!
One of the VPs read something about the cloud and Office 365 and decided to layoff the Exchange support team and outsource it to Microsoft with outlook.com. Problem is about 500+ users in 4 continents still used Outlook 2003 when the switch went thru.
No email or calandar functions for these users! They need a browser and about 200 called the India help desk at the same time for instructions. +5 hour wait time.
FYI outlook 2003 does not support mapi. Very bad things happened and I am working overtime trying to fix it with angry hostile users with +120 tickets a week as it is with only 2 other guys trying to manage the minimalist insourced I.T.
Staying behind may look cheap and reasonable but tickets and support are skyrocketing and management is all sooo clueless on why is support costs and tickets going up! This software worked fine for 10 years! The social media integration, clouds, and soon HTML 5 versions of SAP, Kronos, Google Docs, Salesforce.com are going to hit those stuck on IE 7 next.
So it is a hassle so lets plug our ears and whine I CANT HEAR YOU. Shit will hit the fine later but in a surge like at this company that decided to go cheap with the accounting department running through 3 different outsources to do I.T. Office 2003 is surely not a utility when we went to the cloud.
This is just a pissing match on my language is better argument which is dumb. WHo modded the grandparent to +5?
Whether your compiler is VM like Java or converts it to assembly is the fact that the programmer is not in control. It is not the programmers fault if he or she uses an api that does not handle safety of data types. Historically Java has been years ahead of C until the last decade where Theo had to write secure versions of simple data handling functions as a strong or data type can easily overlfow by default and run malicious code. Even a hello world program can run malicious code when I did this 12 years ago! Why should this have been my fault?
That should be a strike against C and C++. I am not a professional programmer in these languages so I surely hope that is no longer the case. It is why Unix and Windows were so insecure agaisnt MacOS classic and VMS. Every datatype can overflow with stack smashes inside it. The ansi standard functions are not secure by default and each implementation had to rewrite these same things to securely check each data type at compile time.
Yes, C is secure. You can however use C to write buggy software, for example a java virtual machine.
Ok explain why a simple string can buffer overflow? Maybe the latest Gnu C libraries have fixed that now, but damn that is bad as 10 years ago you could! The apis had to be practically rewritten to watch for these like these which explains why it is litered in secure versions of standard function calls.
The problem is you can't really write secure in C unless you know assembly. My simple "give me 2 numbers and I will add them" 10 line program will not look insecure but it is underneath after being compiled (this was 13 years ago I tried this). I know Theo from the OpenBSD tried making secure versions of standard ansi C functions to prevent this. Java at least tries and manages it. I can make the same argument that Java is secure. It is only the programmers who are not etc.
Thats because web designers use webkit CSS and not the W3c one whenever it detects a small screen. It is not tested for anything else except for desktop usage.
They are improving it vastly as Firefox 3.6 was beh and 4.0 was frankly aweful. The mobile versions for Android 2.x were terrible too. But that is not the case anymore. So much so I find myself starting to use it again in a non irritational like way and even like it.
I think one browser engine is harmful and I do not care if it is better. Ie 6 was far better than Netscape and even Mozilla 1.2 sadly and people forget that.
I do not want a webkit future no more than I wanted a IE 6 only future a decade ago. Website owners have to use all sorts of hacks with -webkit prefixes and strange relatie:position bugs that do not exist in IE nor Firefox. Many bash IE and Firefox for not being -webkit standard while ignoring W3C standards. It is not nearly as bad as it was but it is going in that direction as sites like HTML5test.com rush to benchmark futures that only exist in webkit to prove that any other browser sucks which are not even part of the W3C standard.
What about those who goof off and play video games during worker hours where you can't hold them accountable. I assume you would be a responsible worker as I read your post but it is very hard to find someone else who is. Studies show that on average workers spend and goof off 2 hours a day browsing the web and slacking in an 8 hour workday! These are the workers whom I assume when not watched would be quite unproductive.
Mayer also was known to get up at 1am for conference calls with India where Google outsourced their finance departments and went back to bed at 2am and than got up at 6am for work everyday.
I assume with her seeing this can assume if the work does not have to be done at Yahoo it can then be done cheaper as it can be done anywhere right? Maybe that is her plan where she will continue remote work but in India and China for pennies on hte dollar. You can give me studies and stastistics anyday, but at the end of the day it is all about money. Remote work shows you are expendible as a cost center even if you are well known.
If it can be done remotely, then it can be done in a cheaper country for pennies on the dollar.
I am not defending the practice by the way. Just stating how it is and what the MBAs think. Why would I want to play something that does not need to be done here when I can get it done in India for 1/6th the price?
Things likes Sales that can not be outsourced easily can be done at the office anyway.
I couldn't agree more. Especially in computer science. An employer does not give a shit about the science. They want someone who can do AD and DNS right away and image 1,000 computers at a time etc.
But the Devry folks are the same ones who couldn't muster university and have the same background as airconditioner repairmen. Not business professional in the sight of Human Resources.
But many are trying to change that. Business Degrees are useful as that is where I decided to focus my energy in the last 2 years. I can now hear the economic news in CNN and understand exactly what they are talking about. I can look at a accounting reports or memos at websites for publically traded companies and understand what they mean and what they talk about when they say things like cost center.
Unfortunately many geeks miss the big picture they play as a result. Most other degrees teach you something in your field and computer science should not be a science. It should be a math major. No one needs to save 32k on their mainframes using algorithms that no one else can figure out in Cobol. That was an important skill in the 1960s but useless today in line of business needs.
I would take the univeristy because it means they are higher class people who stick with something and have succeeded where 30% fail within the first year or dropoff. Unless the statistics changed since the 1990s?
Salespeople and accountants do create wealth and increase the shareprice. I.T. is a cost so therefore needs to be done as cheaply as possible as the odds are you do not own an I.T. company.
The moral of the story is if you want to do I.T. work for a.com or technology company. Otherwise they do not give a shit about you and even hate I.T. as a cost drain that steals money from everyone elses paychecks (the important ones in their minds).
(Yes some asshole will say this and it won't happen even if it makes fucking sense and would 100% without a doubt save the US economy and it won't happen)
Well if I owned a company I would outsource everyone to India FAST if I had to double my employees! I have shareholders to think about and if I did not my competitors would and undercut my prices. You can argue that I am an asshole, but I am right as in capitalism 101 where if one says BS I will go around this problem and get rid of 100% of my I.T. workers he will be greatly rewarded by the free market as people only buy the cheapest.
In reality you would create more unemployment similiar to France where businesses are moving to Switzerland and not hiring anymore workers as they retire creating a crises.
It is so damn ugly. A phone wont make you go blind looking at white like a much better phone screen would. Odd since computer monitors are considered inferior in DPI as well as flickering.
I plan to get rid of it soon which is a damn shame. Under the hood Windows 8 and Office 2013 are fucking nice. I like the sharing abilities, easy cloud integration, and with 8 all the power and data saving features all with global profiles that go where you go.
But it is sooo white! I have trouble telling if I dose off where the paper ends and where the ribbon begins. I have dark gray on but I feel I am on a 20 year old black and white ancient NeXT cube with monochrome glory from the past.
I like the morphism that all the artists here on slashdot think its hip to hate which imitates physical objects. Aero, shadows, translucent effects, and even leather for the address book in iOS are pleasant and work well. I feel like I am in a time warp looking at the new graphics. It is butt ugly and I hope MS changes it back (I doubt they will) as they just assume we are crankly old middle aged men who hate change. Bah get used to it!
I am referring to custom CSS and HTML where you need to use scripts to place the elements that break in any other platform. Tricks like this and undermining C++ and the "dont code it. Include it!" and other lockin attempts. Bill Gates did this to create such a monopoly that business users are locked in hence why they still run XP and ancient browsers while the rest of us are using Android tablets and IPADs.
While Windows 7 and Office 2010 and IE 9 are much better and do I dare say usable and not as proprietary they are hurting MS. The only reason to use Windows RT over Android/iOS is because of MS office. Infact Balmer even ported it according to rumor, but it is likely Bill Gates forced it to be MS only.
Why use Windows? It is not for superior technology that is for sure. Yes, Windows 7 is certainly usable for an average person now the fact is MS had to do because people had no reason to upgrade.
Gates in my opinion was ruthless and he made products bad and inferior on purpose because he wanted more lockin rather than competing on features and greatness which is what Steve Jobs did. The phone and tablet was ripe for the taking without the proprietary win32 garbage that kepts macs out of the office for all these decades.
Will Bill Gates return then? I like the newer gentler Microsoft even if it is turning incompetent. If Bill was left IE would still have IE 6 crap in their on purpose to make it incompatible with everything else and.docx would be a drmed binary format with no OpenXML so no LibreOffice or GoogleDocs compatibility.
He did the same tricks with SCO Unix before they sold it completely to make sure apps could not be ported. Balmer is too stupid to be this evil
If it were not for IBM and only corps and engineers buying computers in the 1980s the Mac would have one easily. Most hipsters then did not care about computers at all and Bill got used to having a monopoly handed to him on a silver platter. It bit him in the ass later on.
MS is very project manager dominated. I DON"T CARE SHIP IT... attitude. There was no desire at all to ask why? Or what do people want? No thinner, save battery power, make it pretty, make the UI very geared toward mobile uses with research and usability studies to go with it. Just regular Xp with a pen and call it tablet edition in cheap plastic. Phones? Throw the start menu and put some win16 code to save development costs and put in crippled pocket editions and call it the day. Just get it out etc.
Meanwhile Samsung is developing bendable glass while Apple and others are making exotic metals for their cases and special types of glass, custom arms for low power, and even API rewrites to lower power as well. Apple and Google make sure everyhing is pretty and icons and apps all twirl when you use it. Even the DPI is supperior than your desktop computer!
MS is is just throw in a cheap battery with a $1.00 plastic mold in China and call it portable with digitizer. Windows 8 is finally getting things write... only on the mobile end. But man it is so 2008 era right now. Windows 9 will need much catching up. Same is true with IE. They let that one rotted out until they got their ass handed to them by Mozilla and now Webkit. They are catching up but they have a long way to go.
This comes to show you that being proactice and making the best product really does win in the end. Not being reactive.
Live the silly tiles to the non touch dual screen 24 inch monitor setup where that rightfully belongs.
Worse it runs too well and does not have limitations like a 32 meg file limit borrowed from Windows 3.0 left. That means people wont keep buying over and over again as we remove each limit to show off how hip they are to run the latest and greatest like Windows was pre-XP.
A good manager will terminate him and replace him with someone who wants to work.

It shows determination.
IT adds no value.
Salespeople and accountants do create wealth and increase the shareprice. I.T. is a cost so therefore needs to be done as cheaply as possible as the odds are you do not own an I.T. company.
The moral of the story is if you want to do I.T. work for a .com or technology company. Otherwise they do not give a shit about you and even hate I.T. as a cost drain that steals money from everyone elses paychecks (the important ones in their minds).
That's socialism!
I happen to agree with that.
Will Bill Gates return then? I like the newer gentler Microsoft even if it is turning incompetent. If Bill was left IE would still have IE 6 crap in their on purpose to make it incompatible with everything else and .docx would be a drmed binary format with no OpenXML so no LibreOffice or GoogleDocs compatibility.
He did the same tricks with SCO Unix before they sold it completely to make sure apps could not be ported. Balmer is too stupid to be this evil
Apple finally beat them.
If it were not for IBM and only corps and engineers buying computers in the 1980s the Mac would have one easily. Most hipsters then did not care about computers at all and Bill got used to having a monopoly handed to him on a silver platter. It bit him in the ass later on.
MS is very project manager dominated. I DON"T CARE SHIP IT ...
Windows 8 is finally getting things write ... only on the mobile end.
I should have left that start menu on it.
