How many real apps like Java and Adobe Flash can run in these alternative Linux platforms? Commercial apps only focus on 98% of the marketshare and deliberately make sure it wont run on anything else to cut down on support costs. Even Adobe tried to abandon the mac a decade ago.
The only thing portable are open source apps. That is the true problem. The Arm would have to emulate x86 to be optimal. All the win32 server apps will not be compiled for anything else as the PHB's love their low support costs. All the open software is for Linux. Sure Apache and PHP exists for Windows but how many people use it for a serious production environment? I use it to write software that will run on Unix when it is done.
Microsoft has a problem here. My guess is the arm on server blades are the only true market besides some Windows7 mobile tablets/phones. It is dead on the desktop. Solarisx86 should serve as an example of trying to port.
If Joe Six pack can't run World of Warcraft above 5 fps in emulation there will be hell to pay.
The newest version comes with the older word processor.
I tried it and it crashes when you cut and paste more than a page of text from Firefox. I had to clear my temp files afterwards as it crashed each time I started it up. Talk about POS.
It is not that simple. The MSIL just converts the code to win32 calls. Some of these are for more modern versions of Windows that are x86 specific. You would need to rewrite and port part of the win32 apis and MFCs. Sounds like pure torture.
Does the camera watch me wack off with an animated chick moving up and down moaning YES YES or something stupid? Sounds weird. A video works fine thank you
It is about help desk, customer service, configuring CISCO Routers, possessing magical powers to fix the internet, using excel, how to troubleshoot Windows, and writting simple hello world programs.
Just ask any HR representative and they will tell you. This is why it is required to answer phones.
Banks today now do credit score checks on college applicants or there parents if they are under a certain age. If you owe $100,000 in debts you can bet they would do a double take and send your butt to the door faster than you can say DENIED. Cash only kid sorry.
In 2007 you could still secure a college loan but the institutions are now far at the end of the lending spectrum and are as stingy as ever. Banks can more money money shorting country currencies then lending at a paltry 6% interest. If Glass-Seagul was still the law of the land they would be more interested in helping students secure loans.
So yes you are throwing away your chance to ever better yourself as there is no way to pay off $100,000 without a degree before you can get your degree to pay off your $100,000. If that last sentence didn't make any sense it is because it doesn't.
We are screwed compared to other country's that have a free or much fairer priced tuition.
If your parents are funding your college education then you have an even more serious problem.
The fact of the matter is how can you secure a line of credit from the bank for your business when you owe student loans and have no college degree. Without a degree the bank assumes your stupid. They want to see MBA's with great credit scores, partners, and homes and other forms of colateral they can take away if you can't pay back.
The days of 1999 where an napkin with an idea can get you a check for 1 million dollars are over.
I have a brilliant idea and competitors are stealing it. I need to work 2 jobs to payback my student loans first. My wife simply wont let me risk everything for an idea when I can get $10/hr guaranteed money (shit pay).
Get your degree and yes someone may take your idea. You need hundreds of thousands of dollars and several people to make it happen. I mean what would you do if you had a potential VC on the side of the country want you to fly in for a talk? Can you afford to even fly down?? yeah... maybe I am bitter.
You can use Xubuntu or Fedora. You might want to upgrade your ram. It is not the OS but the flash ads for sites like CNN which require adobe flash scripts that take up hundreds of megs of ram and slow down a Core2Duo to a crawl. It is a security risk to use older versions, but the new versions require a decent pc. You are screwed either way.
WIth ram prices these days you can get a gig for cheap which is essential whether you run WindowsXP or Linux.
I have seen jobs at Craigslist that want a bachelors degree in business + 5 years of supervisory experience to work as a manager of payless. They get paid only $25,000 a year for crying out loud.
This is a lesson regardless of school. I have met contacts in school that helped me. I did most of the work at nightschool and the top groups wanted me to work in their projects. People in this group included a VP of HR and a director... not teenagers.
Work really hard and at work and at school network network network and work hard.
Who am I going to hire in a recession? A guy from Kansas State U or someone from M.I.T.? I would pick M.I.T. if both candidates were equally qualified. Experience counts more of course but the deal breaker would be the school.
The debt... well the guy from Kansas Sate working at Target will make more than you. 50% of yoru income will just go to payback loan and you will need a 2nd job to survive and eat due to the outrageous cost. But in 5 years when you are a manager you can then start to make up the difference. In 30 years when you are getting ready for retirement you will see the difference in your bank account. It just wont show for awhile due to the high outragous costs.
Now if you do not find an I.T. job then you are wasting money. Some of you just wont work in I.T. Indians do these jobs now mostly and it is very competitive. Cross your fingers and take risks appropriately. Also do not bring in more than 100k in debt. Keep that as the limit.
I should have phrased it as no republican will vote for any bill that increases spending when a democrat is in the white house. They do this game all the time
The Chinese will side with NK if we dare enter the North Korea territory. In the Vietnam War no American would dare cross the parallel as China would get involved if they did. In 1953 they only cared if we were at their borders. Today they have made the new line at the border with NK.
Besides if China got involved we can't fight for SK. Walmart and many companies would go out of business. All of our goods are made in China and China owns all of our debt. They have us by the balls and Obama knows this. Imagine if they cancelled all exports to the US and then called us to repay the debt? We would be broke and our military would starve and we would ceist to exist anymore as a nation. Ahhh the joys of outsourcing to communist countries.
I think China is smart here and was planning to do this all along
With Net Neutrality a popular show like Beck or Rush Limbaugh can be labeled as hate speech and be shutdown by the FCC. This is why republicans are opposing it. The radio stations are urging callers to call their senators to make sure it is voted out. They are just listening to their constituents.
I agree with Hutchison on this. I found it appauling that the carriers can block and charge per byte and kill the internet. However, I prefer free speech and you know what.
Net Neutrality does not protect us or the ISP's from being double dipped anyway. Its been watered down and can be only used as hate speech and a censorship tool.
Now if Net Neutrality prevented shape shifting traffic and double dipping then I would be angry but it does not.
I disagree. CNN did a poll that showed over 60% of Americans support the tax cuts for rich thinking they would provide jobs.
In the old days of 1987 the stock market would go down for something like a reactionary like Alen Greenspan being appointed to the Federal Reserve. He supported tax cuts to create jobs?! This guy is nuts!
Today the stock market goes down if the upper 2% tax break *might* not past. Wall Street considers Greenspan a liberal today and is a complete 180. If you are an economist who dare says anything against supply side economics you are laughed at as a radical socialist.
In teh 1980's economists today were called classic economists pre-Keynesian. Today they are economists and the Keynesians are called socialists and discredited for being left wing. Fox News is very popular and has altered American views of politics far to the right.
America is shifting far to the right. No republican will ever vote for anything that increases spending or does not include some kind of tax cut. Obama is powerless within his own party who is also buying this crap. Hannity himself admitted Reagan would not be electable among republicans because he was too liberal. Reagan's policies are considered left just not far left. It is crazy!
Check your stats on fox again? Try almost 40% watch it. Many are turning republican as a result. The fact that Obama is considered radical left by most mainstream Americans is outstanding and you can't deny America is not going further to the right as a result.
An ISP can not easily setup PostgreSQL to handle many different user accounts with a root account for each user.
With MySQL an ISP can use CPanel to create another root MySQL with sub users for each account when a user signs up.
PostgreSQL can not do this. There is one root account or you have to manually configure it for each user. For this reason MySQL is the only option for a shared host.
Many companies lay off big slowly so the media never takes notice. HP is a classic example of 200 here 300 there and after 17 months you get 6k laid off. The employee morale never recovers nor does the productivity lost associated with it. The executives do not see this and care more about image.
My guess is the 400 is the start of a monthly lay off cycle that could last for a year or so. Unfortunately it hit the news so the cat is out of the bag.
*My wife uses Yahoo news and YahooIM still. It is what she is used to. The search engine was crap which was how Google came in and killed it with a lite no nense search while Yahoo spiced it up making it a portal and internet destination for all users.
Yahoo exists for its news, mail, and answers, and it generates revenue by directing its uses to MSN Bing and ads to its pages. That part is still popular but it is a shadow of itself since Google and then Icahn came in and gutted the company.
The fact of the matter is people like myself used Yahoo exclusively a decade ago before switching to Google. Yahoo lost revenue for internet ads to Google as well and is no longer profitable in most operations in the US. Laying off employees in the non profitable areas only makes sense. It does not make them bad employees. If anything it shows management to be the bad decision makers where the productivity employees are let go to pay for their directors and executives mistakes.
Also Yahoo planned on entering new markets and hired like crazy before Icahn came in with a hostile takeover and decided to raid and sell its assets. These employers were probably hired to help Yahoo enter these new areas before the buyout and then the sellout of its assets to satisfy Wall Street. They were no longer needed.
People being laid off is sad whether they were talented or not. Just because someone hires does not make them incompetent in the hiring process.

Do people use old school terminals anymore? Remote work is done with SSH today anyway.
X is redundant and even the creator admitted it is obsolete and is holding Linux behind.
If you like the idea of using remote access then using something through a browser.

Only they are powerful and precise enough to cut something like that.

Name one ISP where I can get a PostgreSQL database with my account without getting my own server?
Until that day happens it is Mysql only for me.
Please someone patch PostgreSQL to handle multiple user accounts so ISPs can switch? That is the only thing holding it back and why ISPs include MySQL
With nightmarish escrow (yes commercial real estate has this now too) and little ROI for Wall Street why invest in more buildings?

Q. What do old people call The Great Depression, The Holocaust, and World War II?
A. The good old days
