I worked at AOL briefly and their whole business model is fire %60 of those you hire in 90 days by obscene handle time requirements and keep hiring and hiring everyone including homeless people. Then they wonder why their customers think their support sucks and keep leaving?

My cousin is a medic and in some counties in Florida where he lives the medics and EMT's who actually save people's lives make no more than $18,000 a year. Keep in mind it requires a 4 year degree and very hard medical programs to be elgible.
But society doesn't care as the tax payers want someone who makes the same amount as a pizza delivery driver who doesn't save lives nor has invested in a decent education. I am not bashing your profession as I delivered myself several years ago but I just dont liek the morality of it.

The people I know at work work 70-80 hours a week and are constantly in debt. Even with insane hours it does not cover the bills from the ever high rising cost of living and gas.
You think its that easy to get a degree? Why dont you work for these wages and try to support yourself and limit your hours to 30-40 hours a week? See how far you get?
If it were not for outsourcing you could get a whole lot more money and this poor woman would probably be getting $13-15 an hour like she deserves.
Actually I know this is a large debate but I wish Java was more extended. Especially on Windows.
For example there is an app on work that uses a custom schedule app and I want to interface with it. I am learning java and there is no way to interface to the app and customize it without doing OLE/COM or a VBA script.
In portable languages like Perl and Python you can integrate heavily into each operating system if you wanted or remain portable..
Why can't Java have something like CPan and.NET and Ole support?
Lets face it? This is the reason Java has not taken off on the desktop. The api and gui framework is the best out there but you can't integrate into windows like you can with C#.
I am no Apple fanboy and dont own a mac but the new duo's are quite competive with Athlon's and so are ATI's newest chipsets. Infact some games run faster with them than Nvidia's.
Sometimes that can worsen performance as well. Windows will just swap more often if the swap size is smaller as it loves to use virtual memory and slow everything down. At least unix is smarter in that it only swaps if its needed.
Consumers dont know nor care about hard drive speed.
We are geeks so we know but when they look for a new laptop they look for processor speed and memory and wifi connections. Thats it.
Go look in ads for circuit city and Best Buy? Not even the graphics cards are listed as consumers dont care.
So if Joe sees laptop A: for $1411 or laptop B: for $1300 with the same specs which one do you think he will go home with?
Same argument for winmodems and the consumers picked the winmodem machines because they were $100 cheaper.
I did not even know laptop manufactors did this but I am not in the market for a laptop currently. I knew they were slower but I am surprissed they were 4200RPM's and slower!
My system had 512 megs of ram and doom3 shudders to a stand still when I run it even when Itunes is not running. Its the Ipod service and I wondered why Firefox was so crappy and kept crashing on www.myspace.com.
I noticed it was certain video and audio clips that caused and quicktime opened them by default through firefox.
But I purchased most of my music through Itunes so its not like I can use another player. Dont you love DRM?
I just installed another version of windows2k used just for games and kept Itunes/quicktime installed on installation for work. What a mess?

My guess is not alot. The threading model for Windows is very different from Unix which apache is optimized for.
Not to mention if the organization does not care to only use Microsoft products to satisfy the phb's, then there will be more of a reluctance to use Windows rather than Linux on intel based hardware. Especially if the geeks get to decide what to use.
I have not played with Apache since 1.3x so my information maybe outdated. I wonder if Apache 2.x can take advantage of Windows threading and process models more for better performance?
In the US the answer is yes because they want to standardize on Microsoft to lower support costs.
I also just wrote a post mentioning that many eccommerce sites use java based http servers and run java based servlets where mission critical applications need to be robust. Most of these run neither apache nor IIS and run on Unix.
I mention how bad Microsoft products are for mission critical servers and applications like websites. The response is always ".. but this is what everyone is using".
So in other words it must not be that bad because everyone else is using it and everyone else is using it because everyone else is also using it. If that makes sense?

After playing with StringBuilder and the various string classes in java.utils, I thank god I don't have to write any shell scripts in java! What a mess and I feel sorry for companies like Catapiller who write scripts in c++ instead of shell scripting in order to follow standards on one langauge. I dont hate java but string handling is not its strong point compared to other languages.

Because computers input/output information just like they did decades ago. Unix is simple in the sense that everything can input and output data via text streams. Even the drivers in/dev and operating system internals in/proc can both recieve and output data via text from the shell!
Windows is great for grandma, but in an enterprise server room or for a power user its insufficient.
Why can't you manipulate the data inside the computer as easy as you could with unix? Why do I have to know x,y cordinate to click mouse buttons when running batch jobs for Windows programs?
PowerShell is a great idea and its about damn time. Since Windows uses objects it makes sense to use them as arguments as well as text and the WMI which reminds me of sysctrl and/proc in unix.
Its really all the same to me and just another implementation of the shell from unix.
Many employers make silly job requirements so they can go to the department of labor and complain that there are not enough "qualified" employees to do the job so they can hire some cheap H1B1 visa's or outsource to India legally.
Those offers were there just to make there case.
PS... do you really think management is safe from outsourcing? After all I bet an Indian manager where the programmers are would be alot more efficient and could communicate with the programmers directly? Hmmm.. now how much would an MBA here make again?
Get a CPA or something else instead. Management and senior level IT workers are going next as whole IT departments go oversea's where the cost of integration is lower.
My gf lives in Riverside which is an hour outside of Los Angeles.
Do you have any idea how much a house in LA costs? You can't find anything under $1 million dollars unless its in the hood and now even Riverside where she is costs $400,000 for a house in a drug infested neighborhood.
Many los angelinians are moving an another hour and putting up with 4 hour communte times spending 2 hours each way to work so they can get a house for under $250,000.
In many places like Los Angeles and New York you can't move closer to work. Its just not affordable.
With gas prices going up it looks like now everyone is getting screwed unless they bought property 5 or 6 years ago when it was only worth half as much.
I had less than 1 year of experience being a NT/Netware Lan admin when my job went to India as we moved our IT operations there.
I have no college degree so no one would hire me. I work at 7.50/hr now and live at home with my parents while I get my degree. I gave up in computers and I am quite bitter and dont want to go back in the field again.

.Net is still very new and Java has it beat in terms of robustness and age for dynamic content.
Windows/IIS is known to have over 1,000 security holes since it was introduced and the combination is not as reliable as Apache and Unix.

Its still 2. The difference is the threading and scheduling for smp systems is now done in hardware rather than software.
Makes sense since its a difficult and complex mess to write an app or an operating system that can run on 2 or more cpu's efficiently.
My guess is in hardware you can do alot more then in software.
