    After rumors of temperatures approaching 95C on the macbook pro I hope they use a Pentium M processor.

    I would pay more for it as it would have a longer life than the duo heat sink.

    You know if I wanted to steal something, wearing a uniform and grabbing an item would work great. Customers would assume your an employee and not question.

    If I were the manager I would freak out too and wonder what they were up to. If they were doing something with mischief or a mass gang to steal a few items my job would be on the line.

    I would follow them at least to cover my job in case they were an activist group going to the media or god knows who else.

    Dependance on OLE and DCOM and integration with windows for things like business desktops. I can't modify or script any programs like my custom schedule app at work without using vba and dcom.

    I wish Java did have more prorpietary hooks for htat reason. I can at least do this with python or perl if I dont have c# lying around.

    Especially if you don't know assembler.

    The problem I see is that hackers today use buffer and stack overflows. The compiler creates the insecure code more than the program.

    I wonder how secure managed code in .Net is? I know MS boasts that not a single security hole has been spotted so far but I do not know of any apps that use it? I know Java is secure for that reason but less usefull on the desktop.

    Most dont. Why can't everyone get paid 100k a year with nice jobs? Its just not a reality.

    What is sad is those who do make it blame the little guy for not trying hard enough. Hmmm ok? Who is going to take care of your yard and make your burger during lunch? Or who will actually make your products to line your pockets? Oh thats right the little guy who actually does run the economy.

    I heard in the UK many executives dont want to make more than a million a year because they feel its grossly overcompensation?? How much do CEO's here make? several hundred times that and they want more and more.

    Walmart? Your kidding?

    You may want to google them and use the term unethical when your bored. Walmart is also using imminent domain laws and lobbying to create new super centers. That means Walmart is just taking land away from people.

    Also their headquarters was upgraded courtesy of our tax dollars of course costing hundreds of millions of dollars. Disgusting isn't it?

    Yet the corps still dont get it.

    The accountants are still looking at squeezing the maximum amount of productivity for the least possible cost. This means making one man do the work for two for the same price.

    What they forget is that after 50 hours you get less and less work and when you approach 60 hours you get negative return.

    Coding is hard and error prone. You will only spend more hours debugging the code then implementing it properly by having sane hours.

    Also productivity does suffer as enough GOOD employees who actually do the work of 2 men because they are tallented quit. THis makes only the bad employees and newbies stay on which lengthens your projects longer.

    Most poor managers know this and jsut ship the products with bugs or look at India.

    .. And believe it or not Activision will do just this as they dont have to follow overtime laws in India where the cost of productivity is much much lower.

    These programmers are just shooting themselves in the foot unfortunately and this whole outsourcing thing sucks as it makes corporations a way out of following US laws and we get screwed when we want them enforced.

    Are you sure about the manager idea?

    I heard of banks and Walmart experimenting with the idea of making everyone a manager in name so they dont have to pay overtime.
    I dont know if this is common practice but the big corps responded back by mentioning they would implement this if such overtime laws ever went into affect.

    Actually that was the problem.

    MS did decide to rewrite alot of it from scratch and then the performance and compatibility were not what Microsoft hoped for.

    So they decided to use the XP code base and go back to square one and rewrite %60 of the code that was fresh. I knew it would be remade in 6 months! 60%?? Try a year, maybe 18 months? That is just huge.

    For more info you can do a google search and slashdot covered it a month or two ago?

    No wonder Elchin was fired. To me I would have just used the new code and not reverted back. Get the thing out the door!

    So in other words it will use new security techniques on old code that dates back from Windows95 and NT3.1.

    Those ramblings are quite accurate.

    Libertarians are extreme and hate all government and intererence with big business. For example they would dissemble the EPA and environmental laws because they believe its not the governments job. Also they oppose antitrust laws.

    I believe in the power of government. Just not corrupt government. The alternative is everything run by the private sector which is happening today under republican rule.

    Democrats at least hold more own values more than any other party so I will vote for them.

    I would be willing to work at 20k at this point or even 10/hr if I am doing computer repair. Thanks for the advice.

    I just want something little anyway til I get my degree then work for those 50k a year jobs after 3 to 4 years experience.

    Windows is loaded at startup as well as several services. Java initializes and caches its 100,000 methods in the JVM when a java applet starts which gives the appearance that its slow. However if you start a second app in java you will notice it will take ALOT LESS ram than if you just ran the second app seperately.

    This is because of the loading and caching of the JVM and most of the core dlls that windows apps use are loaded at startup. Its kind of an unfair comparison.

    No it doesn't.

    You have to go to some guys website with an unofficial patch, get the community source code from sun, apply the patch, then bootstrap it with linux-java and hold your breath that it works.

    Also according to that site only FBSD-4.12 works with java5.x and applets wont work with firefox 1.5 in that platform. It sounds very beta quality and I for one perfer to find my own bugs rather than FreeBSD ones in my java programming.

    I did both the A+ and MCSE route rather than go to college and boy do I regret it.

    I only have minimal wage jobs because they dont count as a real degree and I can't gain experience without a job and turns into a catch22.

    The best thing you can do is get a degree. WIth that then someone will hire you to see if you are up to it. Without it, HR will filter you out faster then you can say highschool dropout. Certifications are useless.

    If you get downsized or outsouced it wont matter if you have no degree.

    You will simply be out of the IT market without the magical piece of paper. In this day and age HR is flooded with hundreds of applicants and a high GPA is very important for the first 2 jobs. After that its about yoru experience and where you went to school.

    At least this is what I see but HR and not IT managers typically make the filtering on who gets interviewed.

    HR wants people with experience and college degrees in computer science.

    They can just hire an Indian for minimium wage rather than get someone from Devry if that is what you are looking for. Certifications are pieces of paper in this day and age without experience and a degree.

    I guess this begs to ask, where does one go if you have no experience to get involved in IT or computers?

    I am in school now and used to do LAN Admin work for Novell systems back before the .com crash but have been taking near minimium wage jobs to support myself while I get my degree.

    It would be nice to work any entry level tech position in the meantime while I get my degree since I feel I should be worth more. Any suggestions?

    With OpenSolaris now ported and running excellent on the powerpc platform its a possibility.

    However, Sun offered Apple this and jobs decided to use Mach and Next because it was what the engineers who came to Apple were familiar with and they didn't want to pay sun for the licensing costs and end up being dependent on them.

    Apple learned their lesson with being dependent on Microsoft when the original mac was introduced where Jobs voided the non compete clause and windows was born. Very bad mistake.

    But it would be nice to dream?

    The US government encourages outsourcing and supporting Indians over their own people by having a tax system that charges employers per employee.

    Some big companies pay as much as $11k per head in taxes. But that doesn't apply for seperate Indian companies.

    So in reality the American working for the same wage cost twice as much. That is screwed up.

    I know many former Dell users who refuse to buy their systems from them anymore because of the poor Indian desktop support. One lady had a defective laptop she couldn't replace because no one spoke english with her.

    Support != a cost center, but rather an asset. The bean counters have forgotten this.

    YIKES!

    I worked there for about 3 months. The handle time requirements were unreal and the stupid Sherlock program kept increasing my handle time. The stupid grandma's can easily take 35 minute calls for dumb things like basic mouse skills.

    I had to quite because it was too much and after a customer screamed at me for doing the dumb customer connect sheets I hung up and just quit.

    Also browsing the web at the Tampa call center was a terminatable offense. your being paid to handle calls and not browse the web.
