Even BestBuy who poineered Roowe for working at home results only now requires employees to come in. Yahoo no longer allows this and Facebook bans this and so are others. It seems it's on the way out as employers now focus on hours at the desk with face time to watch results and keep an eye seems to be more important in trends recently
OS/2 Warp is a better version of NT with a 1990s era kernel and usage. True Linux Desktop #### royally with the desktop and I gave up on it at home.
However, outside of the gui Linux has SMP scalable for 64 to 128 cpus, SATA, software raid, high end QOS networking functions, advanced power management and sleep,.NET, python 3, java, and api SDKs, oh and APPS!
Os/2 is not for modern age with support for 8 core 16 thread Ryzen or Xeon CPUs, modern mobile environments, HTML 5 app and browser support, or any server or database or language functioning you get with Linux and yes even Windows.
Hey CPM is fast to boot too but unpractical. OS/2 used to BSOD with MS showing it crash during the expos while NT could handle the same loads.
Yea that should have been gotten rid of in the 90's
Right so you can get calls at 10 at night from Grandma guiding her on opening ports on her firewall settings with UDP to get her Ipad's itunes to work. I am sure that would work out great.... and open a firewall exception for each of the 45 games you have on steam sounds fun too?
SInce we have a overly conservative government at all 3 branches in the US you know nothing will ever be done about this problem for American companies that make these. The free market doesn't work as most users do not know what security is. Their phone is on the net so what is so bad about a camera etc.
So why change? We are the externalized costs but they do not ever see accountability.
Now comes payback. Even freaking routers are cloud IOT based these days?!! There are a few that can get hacked so easily and are obvious very dangerous to the users and the internet in general. Yes if it stops it is like the lesser evil for the long term greater good since the government won't get involved.
To both AMD and to those who are just waiting on their 1080 TIs and those who got their 1080s a few months ago.
With Vega coming out in 72 hours gamers will see not only that it doesn't beat the 1080ti and Titan XP they will giggle shrug shoulders and pretend AMD is irrelevant now. Shame.
In am alternative universe without AMD both the ti and Titan XP wouldn't exist. They exist solely to screw AMD because Nvidia was aware of launch date. What PC gamers don't realize this harms the platform and makes console peasants more attractive. Ha! $700 for a GPU??! My whole PS4 is $399...Giggles.:-(
Nvidia is doing everything they can to take Mindshare and money from gamers at anyway possible.
You mean the GNOME that was so "wonderful" that it resulted in the rise of multipleforks and a mass exodus of developers? The GNOME 3 series has had to undo every major UI design change they have made because people hated it so much.
They never did. I just fired up the newest build of Fedora in Hyper-V to see what has changed. WOW does it suck.
Still can not minimize Windows yet... shook head and uninstalled VM and went back to Windows. Sorry the good old days of gnome 2 are done and for me it killed my idea and fantasy about Linux overtaking Windows. I lost faith in the idea that the community could make something as good as WIndows GUI for desktop users and quietly gave up.
Gnome 3 did damage. More than SystemD did for servers in the image for Linux and was one of the worst environments ever created.
Is it just me or was 2010 the good old days of Linux when the GUIs were good, effects were in via eye cand with openGL add ons, you could actually minimize WIndows too!
Gnome 3 got me to give up on Linux and switch to Windows 7 after 10 years waiting. Ubuntu was close with Gnome 2 and its anti aliagned LCD cleartype fonts. THen #### Unity and Gnome 3 had to come in.
At least Microsoft acknowledges when it went down that path with Windows 8 that not everyone wants a cell phone on there desktop and went with Windows 10. When will Gnome go back to 10 years ago for improved UI?
We have to used WIndows at my last job because of compliance. Only Windows has auditing and logging to support what you described. Group Policy can do desktop lockdowns and make things much easy to administer.
Also the vendor wont support you and the app to the vendor is out of compliance if it does not run on Windows. It is irresponsible to use an OS that is unsupported or do a VM with bugs on 3 platforms (VM, Linux, and Windows) because on Slashdot someone says its sux.
You must be lucky. Most companies if we tell them we wont use IE 6 they do not do business with us STILL. We had 3 IE 6 apps still being updated that require us to use Citrix VM's. If we didn't do this the clients would leave and cost us millions and VP his job.
The VP would fire the IT guy in a heartbeat if he got in the way where I worked at as you are a cost center who does not add value. The app on the other hand makes money.
Will running Windows Server really be that horrible for 1 server?
Yes.
Christ, why does this need to be explained to a person on Slashdot? By avoiding Windows, you're avoiding licensing costs, reducing your attack surface, and removing an element that might otherwise disrupt homogeny in the infrastructure.
Finding solutions that help avoid Windows is something of a badge of pride amongst the Slashdot crowd. Back in the day - like, 10 years ago, people would tinker and do that kind of thing just for the sake of doing it!
Or, at least, they used to. What's changed? Did you look at Windows 10 and say "oh, everything about this is good, let's just stop resisting Microsoft now"? Did you wake up one morning and say "oh, I'm old now, time to stop tinkering and just be a goddamn curmudgeon to anyone who attempts something extraordinary"?
I saw this discussion and I looked forward to reading ideas and solutions about what's out there and what's possible, instead of being a hardass son of a bitch and saying "you're wasting your time".
What changed for me was Gnome 3 and WIndows 7. Next System D. It seems MS is going the way Linux should have been and Linux is getting worse each release. Back in 2009 was the highlight of Linux with Gnome 2 and Init. It just is not as good while aero came out for Windows and now Ubuntu.
I am not a MS fanboy. More like I gave up on FOSS ever competing outside of a few geeks. At the end of the day it makes no sense to run a win32 program on something not designed for Windows because back in 1998 oh boy Linux sure was bettter??! Times change I am dissapointed.
It's not that easy and companies do not even save that much
Let's say Disney needs a project where the resource is worth $100 an hour per head for a 5 man job?
Unisys comes in and says we have a team from Bangalore who can fly in and it. They lied. They call compucom and subcontract that out for $60 an hour. Compucom then flies in some H1B1 visas and pays them $30 an hour.
The client pays $100 an hour for $30 an hour worth of service while Unisys and compucom laugh all the way to the bank.
Disney saved little as the American charges $100 an hour each. Maybe Disney can skim with 4 employees and overwork the rest? Ah, accountants save $$$$ on paper but the $30 an hour employees are less productive and infact may need 6 to 7 making them more expensive and less flexible to change business processes than someone and a PM who is local and works for Disney directly.
Regardless of slashdot stories the company doesn't save money as a result. In fact the outsourcing has slowed and reversed as it became evident this decade that 0 savings were in. The H1B1 visa changes stop this but really the current business trend has been reversing anyway as outsourcing to sweat shops have not been all great or initially as cheap
Run Windows. I never have used wine. Linus himself said if you need to run win32 then run host OS. Linus used XP for PowerPoint.
How would you feel if I asked you if I could run Ubuntu on Windows 10? I could but why? It's a geek toy. At work your job is to put ideology aside and to make your bosses happy by keeping it up.
Will running Windows Server really be that horrible for 1 server?
But if I did have to run Linux I could try KMS with GPU pass thru but you risk downsides on now 2 platforms and bugs for now KMs, Linux, and windows and a performance hit. That won't guarantee higher uptime.
They support the free market unless it applies to them. They want the government to bud out and have open competition and less regulation... Except at the factory they work at.
But my post was referring to slashdotters who say vote for Trump as Clinton is not on your side on with h1b1 visas. Then in the next story the same posters go on how the free market dictates no increase in minimum wages and that automation increases jobs
Please. He said one thing and did another. The FCC to let ISPs throttle your connections and sell your browsing history show the GOPs intentions otherwise
He only wanted your votes. He hires Mexicans to build his properties and uses shady contractors to cut costs doing so maintaining them.
Joke is on you for thinking he would be different. You can't be pro automation and pro free market and libertarian and cry wahaha it's not fair ai have to compete too?
We love bashing Windows but banks LOVE that platform.
Windows NT has Digital VMS style security, advanced auditing, acl, advanced permissions, lock down support, and a rich win32 API that maybe cryptic but has rich functionality to customize the shit out of. Every c++ programmer knows it overseas where they can save money on development platforms.
These customized versions of XP go on lockdown as soon as you plug in a keyboard. They use x25 networking with remote shut off if they stop receiving tokens on the network. The auditing and logging is next to none and group policy customizations and security make it the best OS
Linux is behind in these areas though SystemD is trying to catch up poorly. These are not the shitty default XP from your Dell out of the box.
Can it run and be compatible with the nightmare of PC peripherals and hardware? Is the kernel modern as Linux or Windows 10 in terms of CPU scheduling, power and sleep mode, plug and play, advanced security and firewall like sandboxing and asleep?
What about compatibility with new software like Chrome and MS office?
Unless your an ATM developer I see no purpose. Os/2 is like the1990s version of Windows Phone. A few fans from a successful company but no apps that people tend to ignore, but now horrible outdated. New ATMs have switched to Windows XP this decade too.
If you need an ancient app it seems running a VM or Citrix session with a real Windows NT 4 or Windows 3.11 is a much better option
So then do you oppose automation and support government to get involved to stop it? Or do you favor the free market for these out of work employees who never better themselves like most slashdoters?
I pity those who actually thought he cares about IT and science as evident by the posts.
Enjoy those non existent tax cuts and ISPs selling your browsing history and capped low QOS connections. Don't let your employer find your porn history?
Oh BS. The benchmarks I have seen show the performance of the Ryzen chips to be close enough to their Intel counterparts. Close enough that the difference won't matter.
Unless you are so picky that a half a dozen frames actually matter out of a 130 fps.
Then explain this? 40 fps difference between Windows 7 and Windows 10 is NOT SMALL.
Need more proof?. In Battlefield 1 the same Ryzen 1700 CPU has a 25 FPS drop when going on Windows 10. Put down the AMD fan hat and ballpart game style BIG finger for a minute and look at the evidence? I want AMD to win but right now it has some design problems as the CPU was made during the Windows 7 era so I can't blame this entirely on AMD.
So my guess is AMD is denying it as MS won't change it as AMD owns.2% of the market right now and a major scheduling change will drastic alter power savings on their phones and laptop devices which use the same kernel.
Problem is the guys in suits. Not the geeky admin. Unless there is a ROI it won't ever be upgraded. They work fine. Worse if they outsource to India to cut costs. These contract companies care more to appear cheap and brown nose their MBA clients than fix shit.
I left my last employer. One of the biggest but not sole reason was their shit never worked and I was always blamed. We have HIPPA requirements and freaking run them off IE 6 and store files on server 2003! Worse I replaced the tape drives 3 times because they are 11 years old. I was to blame for reliability, performance, and security. Document shit you get a write up. The MBAs need to make the client happy so shut up etc.
IT wasn't always considered a cost sink like it is today. The great recession really swung the pendulum too far in the other direction from 1999 in the good old days. It's time it swung back and failing insecure infrastructure mixed with IT geeks quiting might swing it back

I quit because of this. Server 2003 IS NOT SUPPORTED. It should be a HIPPA and PCI problem as how can you secure something that is not patched.
