I think the buggiest part is linuxconf, not gnome. I've had a few things in linuxconf actually shut down my machine... quite odd. If I'm lucky it'll just core dump. Also, gmc sometimes doesn't want to shut down when I log out, but that's minor. Other than that, it's been great.
Kinda weird to read in the manual "oh, just run glint to install new packages", then tried it, only to not have glint anywhere on the system. Don't these people try things out like that before shipping?

I think a lot of your "real-world" questions pertain more to the disk I/O performance than chip performance... I don't think those are necessarily good tests for a CPU... You need some hard-core computationally intensive tests... The SETI@home one was a great suggestion. I remember a few years ago using those encryption-breaking blocks as a great benchmark (RC5, etc).

When buliding my machine, I just got a slick black case from A-Pro. Sweet design with sliding front door. Black monitor, black keyboard, and black mouse to go along. I just *had* to go as far away from the standard beige or white as I could...
Computers should either be nice and subtle (but non-white), or interesting like the SGI O2. Now there is a good design.
Exactly; people have enough problems with two degrees of freedom; can't imagine a third!;-) I've been fearing the day when we'll have "flying cars". Just too many concerns to let it fly, so to speak. I think we'll need to change our population before we can let the masses fly; get some more intelligence into the general mix of things;).
I must admit I was very impressed with the film. Those critics were way off base when attacking it. Jake Lloyd actually is quite good, and I really enjoyed all his scenes. Jar Jar is also not as bad as people make him out to be. Just get into it and enjoy it.
Camped out in line from Sunday to Wednesday at the Uptown theatre in D.C.; it was worth it. It was such a fun time, in this world where evreyone seems to try to destroy any hint of people having a good time.
Yeah, you will probably not be writing fluffy code that you're used to in VB; I think they need serious kernel hackers to address sgi-specific hardware stuff and OpenGL integration (hopefully). I doubt they'd go for Linux on MIPS; why throw away all that IRIX devel? I'm sure this is for their VPC line. Probably want to get some driver support into the Linux kernel for the sgi cobalt video chipset and take advantage of the UMA.
What does it matter? The DOJ threats have led to nothing. The whole Micro$oft case? What's happening there? Nothing. They just like to make a big deal about "catching" companies, but then get so caught up in the beauracracy that nothing ever comes out that actually impacts we the people.
I'm all for cracking down on M$, Intel, etc, but at least carry through with some action if you're going to cry about it. Stupid DOJ...
Okay, then how do you make laws against home- made pipe bombs, knives, axes, or other tools that can kill?
It's not the tool's fault it was used to kill. It was the complete responsibility of the user.
If there are no guns, these psychopaths will just use other devices, or even more likely, get them illegally. What, you think while they are planning to do such an illegal act as MURDER that they will stop when stealing a gun will also be considered illegal? Please...
Oh yeah, definitely I meant setting limits. To me, discipline means teaching kids that there are limits to what is acceptable, and if those limits are broken, then there should be correction, but definitely not through any abusive channels. Constructive criticism to enforce limits.
Yep, it's the parents these days pushing responsibility for their children's upbringing off onto the schools and the good ol' Democrat social programs. Then the parents can sit back and blame society when things go awry. Remember back in the 80's when everyone started to think discipline was bad? Well, now we're reaping what we sowed.
Also, this whole labeling of the "geeks" and "outcasts" just makes me sick. It was great when yesterday, the NBC "Internet correspondant" said "Well, after I logged on to the Internet..". Right there you know to stop listening;).
It's not DOOM and Quake that made these kids crazy. They were already crazy. And something didn't click that killing people was a bad thing. Quite sad. I'm just glad I got out of High School when I did...
It's just the whole social outlook on life anymore that's really screwing things up. Parents don't want to discipline their children because they think they should be all nice and fluffy all the time. Well, then you get kids that don't know how to behave properly, and don't quite understand consequences the way normal people should.
Oh yeah, the bumper sticker is the only reason I got the boxed version over burning my own disc. ;) The sticker rules!
But seriously, Red Hat is cool. It's bringing Linux to the world with an "easy" installation. Of course there will be opposition to it among the Linux community. I think the greatest threat is Caldera! Let's talk about that!
I think all packaged distributions just be a large box with one small piece of paper inside with a ftp address so the user can just download the source and build it himself;-).
It's about time someone did something about this problem. I can't stand those sites that insist on using non-standard HTML. Standards are a *good* thing;}.
Gee, maybe some of these web page designers will actually have to learn HTML!
I've just been using vi to generate web pages for the last 5 years; works fine for me, and I certainly stick to standard HTML.
Can I sue the lawyers in this country for being so bloody stupid?
I want to know how can ANYBODY with an OUNCE of intelligence not laugh at stupid suits like these... Please, people, take some responsibility for your actions!
Gee, the kid pulled the trigger and murdered, but it's obviously not his fault. It's obvisouly the fault of the manufacturer of the bullets, because that's what *really* killed those people.
Stupid society...Can't we just ship all these morons to Mars or something? That'd be cool.
As a filmmaker, I feel the loss of celluloid will be a terrible loss to the creative process of bringing moving images to the screen in an artistic way. I've worked in both video and film, and film is the only way I prefer. There's just something about holding the strip of film, finding that exact frame on which you want the match cut, and then splicing it together. To me, 16mm will always be the best way for me to make moving images.
I guess in a few years when digital projection comes, I'll be in that crowd that cries for the "old school" ways. Like some of us that still listen to vinyl and love it.
Digital video still has a LONG way to go to match not only the resolution of organic film, but also the color range and intensity range. The process of converting photons to an image via a CCD chip is so completely different from the exposing process of film that it'll be a while before it looks good, in my humble opinion. So, don't go arguing about 16 million colors, and matching colors, because it's not a data issue. It's the conversion at the CCD chip that's just not right yet.
Just because it's digital doesn't mean it's good. Just think back to VideoCD.;)
Right. He was in two shots, actually. I was just saying "absent" compared to the teaser trailer. Cool that the new trailer focuses on the storyline, and actually gives us a hint of the glory to come...
I dunno. Lucas has always focused on the story and characters. Remember his famous quote, "Special Effects without a story is a pretty boring thing". I think he really follows that.
Also, Lucas himself is trying to downplay Ep. I. He keeps telling the press that he was just making a "B movie". I think it's the press that is just going overboard and selling the movie out for him.
He hasn't directed since "Star Wars" (1977), so I think if he were truly "selling out" he would have just been producer again, and sat back while the film was made. He cared enough about the Star Wars story to pen the script and direct it himself. Not easy after 20 years of only writing and producing jobs.
Just saw the trailer. It's quite impressive. The lightsaber duels are going to be particularly amazing. Nice shots of all the new ships, landscapes, etc.
Anakin was suspiciously absent from the trailer. Hmm...
Also, be aware that the new release date of the film is May 19th, as confirmed by LucasFilm and printed on the trailer itself.
They were just teasing us. They just posted a note saying they won't put it up until the official site does, or some lame excuse like that. They spent the whole afternoon putting up progress reports on the encoding of the video, and then just decide not to put it up!

Besides, how many times has the Enterprise
broken down? See, the Falcon has character.
;-)
Dude, don't even start. At least Star Wars
isn't techie science fiction.
It's a modern myth. It uses the ideas of
mythology and "fairy tales" to tell a story
of humanity and the struggle of good vs.
evil, man vs. machine.
It's deeper than Star Trek.. Don't even go
there. It's like comparing apples to oranges,
really. Star Wars has its impact at a
different level.
Read "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" by
Campbell to get a good idea of what motivated
Lucas when he penned Star Wars.

You're kidding, right? Sorry, couldn't easily

If not, then I just want to point out that
Spielberg has nothing to do with the new film.
It's all the creative genius of George Lucas.
