You haven't used the OS in two years, yet you claim that it's "lame"?
I said "unless it has improved".. It may well have. And it isn't CDE I was complaining about -- it's the management GUI, SMIT. I just found it got in the way of the things I wanted to do.
The RS6000 may have won, but AIX makes HP/UX look good! And their GUI, unless it has improved dramatically since I used it 2 years ago, leaves much to be desired.
Is there any potential in hacking these boxes, say by purchasing the cheapest possible hard drive and swapping it yourself for a larger unit? How about other neat things? I mean, there is a PC in there.
But with these boxes, you WON'T be able to see commercials at all, at least if the 30 second skip feature works as claimed..
Personally I would prefer a 28-second skip to account for my (lack of) reflexes..:)
Re: Macrovision on DSS dishes: Isn't that impossible unless it's actually installed in the satellite receiver its self? Macrovision messes with the video signal directly and so probably can't be done before the MPEG 2 decode.
Actually it was pretty darn good for the instruments they had available at the time. It wasn't until we launched satellites up there that we were able to come up with a more accurate measure, by which time it was a bit late.
Interestingly enough, their reasoning for using this as a measurement was that in the unlikely event that all of our current meter sticks were destroyed, they could be re-created by measuring the earth again.
I subscribe to Cogeco @HOME and they have always (even before they were a part of @HOME) limited the bandwidth to 14Kbits/sec up. Not even enough to stream an MP3. I think I'm going to call my cable company and demand they implement this 128Kbit/sec limit:):)
who were claiming huge performance increases over an Alpha-based Cray supercomputer by comparing their performance on 4-bit integers to the Cray's performance on 64-bit floats.
Also remember there will be a huge penalty associated with reprogramming the FPGA. Based on the specs of the devices they are using, I would say several hours.

What kind of film scanner and does it work under Linux? I'm considering buying one fairly soon, but I don't want to pay too much for it (under $1000 for sure).. It's not fair that flatbeds are going for $100 CDN everywhere you look but film scanners are still ridiculous..
I couldn't help noticing that it is a GREEN dragon. As any reader of the Dragonlance series of books (or player of Dragonlance AD&D) will know, green dragons are EVIL.
I don't know if this is such a good idea.. many (most?) stories are not well formatted as stories, which is why Rob generally only quotes from the submission.
Also stories are often submitted many times. Do you want to sift through a page with 50 of the same story?
Finally, what about corrections and the like? I'm sure there are a lot of corrections submitted when there is a mistake, such as yesterday when an extra " was added to a URL.
IMO, Rob does a good job of filtering stories as it is. Why would we want to view rejects?
I totally disagree. Free access is an essential part of slashdot, if only for the simple reason that the ability to post messages here is not worth $29 to a lot of people, myself included.
Many of these people have interesting opinions and post good messages (myself possibly included but maybe not:) that we would lose under a pay system.
How is having $29 to throw away a measure of the validity of your opinions or the quality of your writing?
If we want to see all comments, how low do we need to set the threshold? I would expect one below the minimum threshold would do the job, but what is the minimum threshold?
One thing that gets me about the Win CE machines (apart from the M$ software) is that it seems to be impossible to program or write 3rd party apps for the thing. Unless I am really mistaken, you can't develop your own software to run on a CE machine. This is a feature I really value in the Palm Pilots, even if their hardware (RAM and lack of peripherals) is much less than that of the CE machines, for the same price.
Ever take a 35mm neg and blow it up to 20x24? Lots o grain isn't there?
No, but I have projected 35mm slides shot on good film (e.g. Kodak Professional Ektachrome) to well above that size.. And the grain wasn't all that noticeable. At any rate it was much better than the 1280x1000 or whatever they're showing Star Wars at.
I read an interesting article in Hi-Fi World a while ago, where the author's point was that CD was basically limited to an (inadequate) 16-bit, 44.1Khz sample, whereas LP playback equipment has continued to improve in quality over the past 10 years.
And if 16-bit, 44.1Khz is adequate, why do today's good CD players have huge (e.g. 128x) oversampling?
By the way, HD CD players (DVD audio) offer 24-bit, 96Khz.. I want one..
I agree. I'm already sick of all the grainy digital effects out there. Last summer I saw The Truman Show from the front of the theater, and there were trailers for Armageddon, Snake Eyes, and the like. What bothered me about these trailers were that to me, I could see the grain in many of the digital sequences. And this was at a resolution above 1280x1040. The quality of The Truman Show really impressed me, however.. The shots that were done through a fisheye lens for example looked real, not as if they were shot through a regular lens and processed digitally.
I got the message too, and first emailed support@redhat.com as instructed, only to discover (no big surprise here tho) that it's for paying customers... I think this is kinda evil, given that the error has a simple (but undocumented) fix. It really reminds me of Oracle: "orainst has encountered a fatal error. Please contact Oracle global support."
Now it's installed and I can't say I'm impressed.. It seems worse than 99.8 and has already crashed twice and eaten my panel config.

Just wait... My VCR comes with a little infrared gizmo that controls my cable box and can control satellite boxes..

Sales of lead-lined underwear have increased ten-fold.
Are the KDE people trying to tell us something?

Or are you using Perl's Math::BigInt? :)
Anyone care to review the book on Amazon? I have a class now or I'd do it. See John Katz's article for suggestions and KEEP IT CLEAN.

Anyone seen The Gods Must Be Crazy? This kinda reminds me of that movie.
If so, how quickly?
This is true: NT is becoming the choice of a new generation: the lazy IT professional.
