Whoops. My AJAX-based spell checker also neglects to underline words that might be out of context or misspelled because underlining wastes CPU cycles.

  5. Doubtful on Google Explores Re-Ranking Search Results Using +1 Button Data · · Score: 1

A few months ago, I wrote a blog post about why the +1 Button can't work. I still think that it's doomed to failure, especially if it is used for ranking. It's also probably safe to say that the majority of people who search the web are interested in finding results, not ranking them. What this means is that most regular users won't pay attention to the +1 button on the search results page. Honestly, why go back to the results page after you've found what you're looking for? Most of the +1 users will almost certainly be spammers.

As a teacher, you shouldn't insult your student's views in front of class, no matter the subject.

I'd say he was challenging the idea of there being a god. If he was insulting it, he'd stop at saying that belief in a god is nonsense. (What kind of insult is 'nonsense', anyways?) Instead, he continues to elaborate on why creationism is faulty.

Schools ought to be institutions that teach kids skills such as critical thinking. Basically, this teacher is pointing out that people have no reason or evidence to believe in what they believe in. Some people can't handle that, so instead of making a case for their views, they try to censor and remove that teacher.

  11. No URL schemes?! on Firefox 7.0 Beta Released · · Score: 1

They felt the need to get rid of the protocols/schemes in the Address (er, I mean "Awesome") Bar. Apparently, it's because the developers think that it will put more focus on the actual page within a website by allowing more room for it to be displayed. But I'd argue that the server is pretty important, especially for us web developer types, and how we connect to a server is a vital piece of knowledge. I mean, the scheme is necessary for a valid URL.

I don't know about anyone else's displays, but my browsers all have sufficient space to show the full URL most of the time. If not, it's not a hassle for me to click and see the end of it if I really need to. Usually, I know where I am on the web based on how I got to that page as well as the page itself. I don't think we need these silly URL omissions. What's next, hiding URL parameters? Removing the favicon?

For anyone else who feels my frustration, you can bring back the schemes pretty easily:

    1. - Type about:config in the Address Bar
    2. - Find browser.urlbar.trimURLs
    3. - Right click it and select Toggle

Bam. Your suffering has been relieved.

It isn't gaming that's sucking. It's the crappy game developers. People have made bad games for decades. The only difference between the game makers between then and now is that now, they're being louder about it.

If the developers can't figure out how to keep their own games interesting and fun enough to be played for more than a couple of hours, maybe they should either try harder or stop completely. But instead, they seem to like blaming customers for not having enough time to play their boring games. They're also willing to include tracking code in their games just to measure how little people have actually played so they can announce to the world just how little their games are worth playing.

Making a bad game shorter won't make it any more fun. It will just make the daunting task of playing it a little less painful.

Like many others have said, a case would be fine. Or even tether it to your pants if you're really paranoid about dropping or losing it. This invention would likely cost more than the alternatives. It would add to the weight and bulk of your phone. It's also likely that it would not be allowed on airplanes as airliners understandably have policies that disallow pressurized items from being on a plane (particularly in a carry-on, but the TSAs might get suspicious if they scan it in your baggage as well).

Every search engine is prone to sleazy techniques. Search engines all have ranking factors to determine the value of a page and its relevance to the user's input query. There will always be people who will do what they can to identify those ranking factors and exploit them.

That said, I wouldn't say that SEO is a bad practice. Using SEO techniques appropriately will help people find legitimately useful content among pages of text with similar words, less developed information, irrelevant data, or whatever else.
