Well, since we need to compare to BMW according to the article: a series 3 maximum speed is 250km/h, so is the maximum speed of a series 5, and 'lo and behold also of a series 7! Wow, they all are equivalent! ;-) (For those that don't know: stock BMW's are electronically locked to 250km/h, they can do more if the enigine allows is and if they are unlocked)

All in all: CPU speed doesn't matter... especially not when talking Intel ;-)

You're on slashdot here... Everybody here should understand what I said. Your solutions also implied that one knows what Tweak-UI is (and that you need to download it if you need it) or it implied that you know where the "Group Policy Manager" is. I have a stock XP Pro here, and I have absolutely no idea where to find the "Group Policy Manager".

My solution just assumes you know that you know the registry and thus know regedit.exe. One can at least *use* my solution with a stock install.

Mine was bought december 2001, which made it three years old in december 2004. It failed in June 2005... I tried getting into the program, but the conditions didn't apply for me and so I would have had to pay.

You're lucky. My (a bit over) three year old iBook died of the dreaded "logic board failure" and repairing that would cost more than a new iBook. I was happy with my iBook, but I didn't replace it. I'm back to using Windows and Linux. For the moment it would be a stupid investment to buy a G4 based laptop: I'm most definately waiting for the Intel Macs. That's still a while, and perhaps then I don't want to go back. Who knows...

As for your harddisk: shouldn't that be 10GB? After all, even my old 486 laptop from 1994 came with a 350MB disk.

I was reminded of a joke, but I can't seem to find it online (googled a bit around). It was about the conversation between Abraham and God about how to explain Genesis. Abraham wanted to write down the whole history since the Big Bang, but God insisted that The Book would become too big and that they should limit themselves to 7 days.

Anybody got a link? I got a good laugh out of that story.

Hey, my primary laptop is a P-III mobile at 600Mhz that I bought for 100€. Slammed an extra 256Meg into it that I had lying around (total is now 512Meg, alas it didn't take the 512Meg module that I had lying around, otherwhise I would have had more) This setup runs WinXP like a charm (with W2k theme of course) I recently exchanged the harddisk from 6Gig to 80Gigs which cost me 117€. So for 217€ I have a laptop that runs *everything* I need and cost not much at all. Yeah, photo manipulation isn't the fastest but I don't do that often.

A new laptop will do the same: work perfectly, but it would cost at least 750€ (if I can find one for that price) Of course, I'm just a light user: Firefox, Thunderbird, iTunes, Palm Synchronization, OpenOffice.org, PuTTY, occasional GIMPing.

A cheap-ass PC is more than enough these days unless you're into movie-encoding and photo-editing. :-) One thing I doubt a bit is DVD viewing on a P-III, especially the lower-clocked ones. I tried VLC on a P-III 800MHz and that's almost impossible. Perhaps stuff like PowerDVD and whatnot are better but I don't like those programs.

My primary laptop used to be a G3 600Mhz/640Meg RAM, which is more definately slower than my current setup. I loved that machine but it died from the dreaded logic board failure.

So, from that point of view, I am entirely at fault.

You see, this works when you talk about me: I would never buy a product with them because of their inability to create a compliant website. For my wife this is a small inconvenience, but she really doesn't want to hear about browser wars and standard compatibility. All she needs to know is that she needs to fire up another browser because (I quote myself) "ALS Verlag did everything you shouldn't do when building a website". FF, OOo, and friends are "licensed for personal use only" and these people believe the company will be billed a significant sum for such "improperly licensed software".

And the SBA is right of course! They will be billed the gargantuous amount of 0$/seat!!! On top of that they will have to pay a 150% fine on the total amount! Better stick to the Free Internet Explorer and the properly licensed Microsoft Office 2003 (Latest version is not optional says SBA!)

Of course, I'm sure that neither OpenOffice.org or the Mozilla foundation will object to higher amounts per seat (like 1$/seat...)

The first one pissed me off because the .de and .com versions don't seem to have problems. The second one was problematic because my wife wanted to order something and didn't understand why the website was broken (Firefox is mandatory at my home). She blamed the website though, but I had to show her Internet Explorer so she could order the stuff she needed.
