  1. Re:So? They got what they deserved on The Great Internet Con · · Score: 1

I kind of agree with both of you. In a way there is lack of education of the AOLiens (oh, well...a lot of people out of AOL too) I preferred the times when was *I* newbie and I tried to get integrated in the big world of internet, at that time still dominated by the people who *know*. People were always eager to help me at those times...but then I asked for help of course :-)

Unfortunately we (I'm no newbie anymore) are the minority now. When I see people writing all caps I politely explain them netiquette, instead of flaming them to death... It's not because we understand what we do, that we have to regard the newbies as lesser beings. No, it is our role to educate them and show them what is wrong and right in this vitual place called "the internet".

Actually someone in /. once said AOL should introduce some kind of "internet-apness-certificate" to allow the AOLiens on the internet. Kind of a driving license, even with one you do so much stupidities but at least you've got a base :-)

    Oh, okay...moderate me down (-1,Ignorance) ;-)

To be honest, I played M$-FS version 3 a long time ago... (Was SubLogic bought in those days?) I only saw the (98?) version on a friends computer, looked pretty nice tough.

  3. Please don't freak out on Bungie Software Bought By Microsoft · · Score: 1

I'm not a microsoft lover at all, but I think you should not overreact. Unlike for OS and Office applications, Microsoft has in no way a monopoly in the gaming industry (nor does any other company)
Actually they made some great games and free market competition worked in that domain. Think of M$ Flight Simulator which has set standards in flight simulating software.
Another great game (tough not really from Microsoft) is Age of Empires...well at least for me.

Okay, I admit that porting to other platforms will probably be a difficult issue, tough never forget that a great deal of software for the Mac is made by M$ (Isn't the standard browser for mac IE?)...so I wouldn't panic.
    Of course...for Linux...well...

But then I probably see the world too optimistic, no?

So you lose your contacts on a system crash or driver format? Not a smart move, huh?
You just need to backup the database directoy (probably NewDB or DB99b,... ).
Actually you can change in the registry in what directory the database is located. One of my tactics is to put it on another drive, so a systemcrash (unless you have a headcrash or lose partition information) won't affect the data and after reinstall you have it handy immediately.
Another use of repointing the directoy is centralisation of the databases. You can put network-shared-paths in the style "\\mainputer\icqdata\", in that way you can access the same databases from different computers (okay, mainputer should be turned on) and you don't have to keep them in synch.

Oh, did I say that I prefer ICQ ;-)

  5. Re:Thank you on Myst - In Realtime? · · Score: 2

That are words! You are plainly right, but most 1st person shooter gamers don't care about the story. My brother loves those kind of games and after he finished Halflife I asked him how he liked the story? Guess, what he replied me: "What story?" (Okay, I admit the plot is not that great)
So yes a good old "no-gun" adventure in 1st-person 3D really would bring some new wind in the genre. That new Myst could be a great precedent :-)

  6. TV over internet on Is A Public Wireless Internet Possible? · · Score: 1

Yes, the only streaming-video I saw sonline was news, and that makes sense since the video quality of news is more or less irrelevant: sound is much more important.
Now, think a moment about it, why would you want to watch a full movie on a computer screen. I don't know but I prefer a 37" 16:9 TV screen over a 19" (21" if you're lucky) to watch anything...Call me old-fashioned, but I think a lot of people think like me.
I woudn't watch a DVD on my computer either....
