  1. error correction on CD Copy "Protection" in California · · Score: 2

What this looks like it does is throw off the error correction used by cd-rom drives but not mess up the error correction used by a regular cd player. So couldn't you just get a digital dump of hte raw data, then doapasover it using whatever error correction a cd player would have used?

Well, solar cells work a bit differently, though I forget the specifics right now. Something about the light bumping electrons off of metal alloys (I could be getting mixed up with chlorophyl). Either way, if a material could be created that could convert heat directly into electricity (like a solar cell does with light) then the efficiency of any reactor would go up. Note that I am not saying that the heat -> electricity conversion would have to be 100% efficient so it shouldn't violate the laws of thermodynamics.

Plus in order to use a stack scanner on a book, wouldnt you need to cut out each individual page, or slice all the pages at once at the binding? So in order to copy the book you must destroy it. If you're selling copied books on a large scale that would work, but the average person would never copy books under those conditions.

Yes every individual has th eright to say what they want, free speech etc.... But no one has a right to FORCE me to listen or a right to make me use my resources to pay attention. I have a right not to listen and installing spam filters on my e-mail account is one way of saying "I'm not listening". By your argument its immoral when I don't pickup the phone when the caller ID is blocked/unavailable b/c its a telemarketer. I am obviously violating their right to free speech by not listening to whatever ad they are pushing on me. Or when I throw away my daily dozen credit card offers unopened, I should open them and read them carefully so as not to violate Citibank's free speech.

Censorship is good (or at least acceptable) when it is an individual censoring what he himself sees, or censoring what others can see with their consent. Its bad when that individual is censoring what others can see and those other people have no say in the matter. So an ISP that advertised itself as spam free because it was going to block relays is being on the up and up about what its doing. If it just goes ahead and does it without consulting its customers than that could be a problem. Yes, I know I have abused the normal definition of censorship.

Why shouldn't the company help out a little? If you worked in a machine shop and a new machine came it it would be the company's responsibility to train you. So in a programming environment where new languages/environments etc are coming out constantly why shouldn't the company invest the money to get the most out of its workers. Its easier to pay to train people then to fire the ones who don't learn on ther own and get new people. So even from a costs/benefits viewpoint its good business sense not just a handout.
