In our dept , we use Exceed to logon to HP-UX machines to do most of our jobs. And there are plans now for "standardising" with windows 2000 for god knows what!. I mailed them for using Linux. They came back saying Office suites (MS!) are not there & support is difficult.(Hope it changes soon with *office)...
Anyway I use linux..and will do so even if they kick me out:-p. What's funnier is you can get linux "officialy" installed on request for project specific purposes..I was around when the did one.You would not believe that they INSTALLED a cdrom drive on the computer (which they got it from anothet linux box)..just to boot RH linux...(they could have as well done it with NFS/HTTP...)
What I personally think is..this article is just escapism..maintaining a linux network is tough for the sysadmin..they can no longer get away with double clicking their way to escape out of any situation...
The article's title could have been reported as 'Top 10 people who helped technology" . You
could not call some of them in there as "tech people".Tech people would mean developers/scientists not CEO's.
Interestingly the article's real title at the homepage "The 10 Most Important People of the Decade ".Just to grab attention..i think .
The work mainly being done in asian countries is
offshore development for some client (60-70 % its
in US..).If you are sent for some temporary time
then you get paid around 2.5-3K $ per month. So H1B definitely pays more for the same work. And BTW, if these people come back they will probably work in one of the offshore centres of an American company...the problem of US losing talent does not exist...I think H1B 's will cease to be a problem in coming years when companies find it even better(& cheaper ) to outsource their work from other countries..may be we will have a discussion on/. regd that then;-)
If some guy got suckered into downloading these songs..he is sure going to feel bad about it and is NOT gonna buy the CD's....so what point have they made ?
Surely they cannot flood everything ?What about gnutella , scour..and lot of guyz are going to
download it to claim "hey..i was not fooled "
does it make any marketing sense and who are they
fighting..
The whole discussion thing will in the end boil down to something like a apt-get/Debian vs RPM/RedHat fight (..remember GNOME/KDE some days back ). Ok RPM doesn't have any automatic update feature..so what ? aren't there scripts which can do it ?
Just because the debian version seems/is/works better doesnot mean RPM is bad.. i for one find it very comfortable to work with and would hate to read the man pages again !!
15 yrs of programming in C++ will get anyone bored.. step down from the messy realms of object orientdness and try some fun , no rules language like perl..or explore scheme and lisp
What is a script kiddie ? Leave alone discussions of him being intelligent or not , despicable or not. What is the future of a script kiddie..Does he become a expert hacker some day.Ok in the transcripts they learnt something. How to mount..see disk space.Over the years they may mature and write exploit scripts. Is n't this possible? Well for me how a script kiddie differs from an expert hacker (or whatever we may choose to call him ) is education.Education is not about knowing how to do a thing or even about finding innovative ways to hack. It's about how you percieve the beauty of a thing. It's when you start loving a computer , loving an OS , loving a home page and knowing well why you love it.Well a script kiddie doesn't know why he should like a dumb computer. It's this hate and the jealousy of other people liking a thing for reasons unknown to hime he seeks to destroy.
