Saw one on "Tonight II" the other day. The "reporters" took it, and the Nintendo "cube," to Sony, to show it to Sony's PS2 development team.
They seemed impressed - of course they were acting very "blasé"... One guy was quite SURPRISED by the XBox's size - it's about 3.5 times bigger than the Nintendo cube.
I am not sure which Japan they surveyed to come up with the conclusion that the piracy rate in Japan is rather low...
I've been here for almost 11 years, and from what I have seen, I wouldn't be surprised if piracy rates were 50% or more.
So, yes lower than China/Russia/etc, but not what I would call "rather low."
A Microsoft lawyer was interviewed on BBC Radio 4 this morning and he came out with this classic:
"We have by far the most open system!"
John Franks, Head of EU law, Microsoft.
And that's not true? Think back just a couple of weeks and you're going to remember all the hoopla about CodeRed... and the various e-mail viruses...and
Oh, he had something else in mind... err... never mind then.:-)
E-mail me your postal address and I'll be more than happy to send you a CDR or two with the distribution of your choice - or *BSD, or any freely distributable OS.
(I'll cover the postage too. In exchange you need to "do something nice" for someone, when you have a chance.)
Or, as my grandfather, God bless his soul, used to say, "facerea de bine, e futere de mama"...

Web browsers for the Atari ST? That would be amazing considering the machine comes with the following specs:
You have obviously never "played with" an ST, have you?
Definitely slow by today's standards, but, for example, my father is VERY happy with his. It does everything HE needs running of an old 80MB SCSI HD that I had no use for.
PS: Is there a "Thunder" like spell checker for Windows or Linux/*BSD?
Africa is full of them - at least it was when I last went on a walkabout ten years ago.
Do you remember the old, pre compressor, fridges? I guess most of the/. crown is to young to remember those...anyhow, it's the "reason" you'll never find an engineer in hell, he'll find a way to use the temperature difference to create air conditioning. (Wow, I shure massacred that old joke.)
Unless you are a slow "hunt and peck" typist, like me, you can definitely "outtype" 300 baud.
Having said that, nobody I know used the model 100 at 300 baud, you could mod them - a POKE somewhere, if I remember correctly - to connect at 450. WOW, the speed.:-)
Still have mine, although I haven't used it in a "few" years. One of the best keyboards I have ever typed on.
Bad idee every time i put Rage Against the Machine in my cd player i get so pummed up i start to drive to fast and verry agressive
Golden Earing's "Radar Love" does that for me. I have a "must get there one hour ago" CD where that song is the every third track. Also the every third track is "Hot Rod Lincoln", and some other "driving songs" there to fill the space. "Danger CD", according to my Japanese friends who have seen the influence it has on my driving - yes I do have to pay MAJOR speeding tickets everynow and again...70.000 yen a couple weeks ago.:-(
(And I wasn't even going that fast, definitely under 220KmH, regardless of what their "laser" said.)
If you "bend and stretch [the rules] to your will", you are certainly breaking the intent of the rule. So in canada, you're breaking the legislature's intent to steal 30% or 40% or 80% (whatever the rate may be) of your "income", but having learned the rules, you've "done it properly."
Last I checked there was nothing in the criminal code about the "spirit of the law", you have to follow the "letter of the law."
Fair? Perhaps not, but I have long accepted that life wasn't fair, in this case I help make things a bit "fairer" for me. (I help the less fortunate "in exchange" - that way I KNOW my money/time/etc makes a direct impact.)
When will the western world figure out that China is not a friendly country.
When will the western world figure out that China is a different country. Different culture, different sense of morality, etc.?
When will the western world get off it high horse stop trying to impose its standards on China?
Indeed, it isn't as bad as it appears. Only a fraction of the inspected places got shut down. It could only be for faulty wiring on the appliances I hope.;-)
My best guess would be that they were closed for "failure to grease the right hand."
The only thing I'm wondering is why they want to do this to themselves, and why the Tibetian people didn't want it to happen. Now they'll get a chance to be in the news every week.
Yeah, like they are stupid enough to allow any Tibetan disidents access to any place where there are news cameras. I bet you the PLA is already working on "containment" plans.
Your signature, "Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly." is, for lack of a better term, wrong.
It should be "Learn the rules so you know how to bend and stretch them to your will, without fear of liability."
(While in Canada I spent a few weeks studying the federal and provincial, B.C., tax laws. As a result, I paid less than 1% - that IS a one - of my income in tax; that went on for about seven years. ABSOLUTELY 100% above board, not one law broken. Really.)
So I'm forced to wonder whether Tokyo is crawling with assholes.
I can assure you, it is. They behave "better" on the surface, but Tokyo has its assholes, as has any other big city.
I've been in Japan for almost 11 years now, and I am tired of hearing of how "civil" and "nice" and "insert flattering adjective here" the Japanese are. Yes, on the surface they seem more civilized than, for example, North Americans, but, trust me, Japan has its share of assoles.
Nevertheless, it's still a GREAT place to live... especialy if you are a 6 foot 220+ pounds male, who can tie together and bench press any two of said assholes. It's the "little people" that have it bad... but, sadly, that is the same everywhere.:-(
Caffeine does not cause an addiction wherein someone simply must get his Coke fix...
Cool... and the splitting headake I get if I don't get my cofee on time is because??? Caffeine withdrawal? Not me. Nope. Never. BECAUSE I DRINK COFEE ALL THE TIME!
(Just because you don't experience it, it doesn't mean it's not there.)
Does anyone have any numbers/statistics on Linux use in Japan?
No hard numbers here, but judging by the LARGE number of "Linux" Magazines, and the variety of distributions they always include, I'd say relatively large numbers of "semi geeks" are at least familiar with Linux.
Having said that, I have yet to see sold in a store any computer without MS Windows. (Thre could be some in the "dark corners" of Akihabara though...)
I understand that the judge ruled that the channel has no value in Canada. But I'm not sure I totally agree with that, at least from a moral point of view.
Moral point of view? Ha! This is 2001 and Slashdot... besides, morallity is such a vague term as to have little, if any, meaning anyway.
Like it or not, we live in an increasingly "legalistic" society. Most people people think legal=right. By that thinking then, there is nothing wrong with us Canadians doing whatever the hell we please with the signal. As long as it's not against our, Canadian, law.
Or you could ask someone from Japan to send you one?
:-(
There is that NTSC/PAL thing though.
Where are my mod points when I need them???

My 2 yen.
4 weeks = 28 days
1 month = slightly longer than that, except for February.

Of course. Doesn't everyone?

Most of the time you only have to pay US taxes on any income over US$70.000.
IANAL and all that.
